Onward is a movie with a beautiful big brother/little brother relationship at its heart. And this relationship is my favourite thing about the latest Disney Pixar animated adventure starring Chris pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer.
Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers set off on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there. A quest that neither could do without the other.
In terms of how much I enjoyed the story, I think Onward is OK. I wanted to have been more engrossed with it all, but there wasnāt enough newness to it, theme-wise. There wasnāt necessarily much animated cuteness either, but I doubt Iād have noticed that if Iād loved the way the story played from beginning to end.
Itās really the last third of director Dan Scanlonās film that I enjoyed most. Before then, I was more than a little impatient for the results of the filmās central magic spell to manifest.
Other things I enjoyed about Onward include the fullness of Hollandās character Ianās blue hair and what Scanlonās film has to say about belief in general – but especially self belief and confidence.
As far as animated movies about sibling relationships go, particularly the big brother/little brother dynamic, my favourite will probably always be Big Hero 6 (2014).
If you’re curious, watch Onward because it’s not bad, and perhaps, youāll find even more to love than I did.
Happy Film Loving,

I felt the same impatience. It took too long for the main magic event to pay out. I thought we’d at least spend one third of the film with the full results of the spell.
That would have been fun, but i guess, ultimately a different. I’d definitely watch the alternate version though.
I agree the first part of the movie was ok but the end was so darned good! Honestly the end made the whole movie for me!

Who was your favorite character? I really liked The Manticore! She had a minor arc as well. A lot of people talked about the one-eyed officer character, but that was a very minor character that could have been explored more.
The Manticore was great, indeed. Besides her, no other single characters really stood out. The one eyed officer did have some fun dialogue but I can’t say it was enough for me to fall in love. š
