I enjoyed learning about the origins of Martha Stewart, America’s first self-made female billionaire, in R.J. Cutler’s new documentary, Martha. I liked understanding how she grew up and the more vulnerable aspects of her experience. Most of all, however, I loved learning how she is formidable. And as many have realised, the original influencer. 

As a fan of Stewart, her public persona and achievements, I naturally cheered her on each time she defied expectations and illustrated what is possible for many today, especially women. Nevertheless, there are lessons to be learned from Stewart’s story. Particularly since everything did not go according to plan in her personal and professional life.

My knowledge of the stories of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and the like made me aware that many who achieve groundbreaking/extraordinary things rarely get described as ‘nice.’ In this way, I was unsurprised by a few of the terms used to describe Stewart by some who worked with her. None of it seems to have stopped her from being as celebrated as she remains today, and I’m certainly not mad about it. 

Martha is a good, well-paced documentary. The kind you watch for reasons including but not limited to a general curiosity about the human. In this case, one who happens to be an exceptional businesswoman. Cutler’s film reveals a fair amount about Stewart, from the elements that led to her remarkable entrepreneurial success and the more personal aspects of her life. He does all this via an interview with Stewart, a dive into her very personal archives and contributions, largely in voice only, by those who know her. 

Make time for Martha if you’re curious and possibly be inspired, for the lady has lived quite a life.
