Directed by Benny Safdie, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, The Smashing Machine is the story of mixed-martial arts and UFC champion Mark Kerr.
I’d never heard of Kerr before. I briefly looked him up to see how much Johnson resembles him. Johnson’s facial structure is certainly a great place to start. Still, the seemingly subtle prosthetics are impressive.
It’s also good to see Johnson and Blunt sharing the screen again. I already like the cadence of the former’s ‘gentle giant’ voice. As for Blunt, well, she’s always great, isn’t she?
Were you aware of Kerr before now, and will you be watching this one, or have you seen too many sports biopics at this point?

I’m just happy to see Dwayne Johnson acting again. He was literally playing some variation of himself in every movie for awhile. Sometimes it works, other times it gets tiring. I didn’t know Mark Kerr either, but the makeup is impressive and the serious performance makes me hopeful that he may get his first Oscar nomination. I hope Emily Blunt gets her second nomination too.
I agree, there’s much to hope for with this one.

First time hearing about Kerr from me as well. Makeup/prosthetics look very convincing. I’m sure it was not easy for Rock to pull back his natural charm. Definitely an interesting subject matter.

I have a hard time watching movies with so much blood and violence, this one looks good, but I doubt it will make my list! 😉
I hear you, Tiffany. At this point, it’s the stars more than the story that appeals. A part of me feels that my curiosity about sports films has been exhausted. But I remain a little curious because this is a biography.
