LAST HOLIDAY (2006): The Things I Liked…

Last Holiday (2006), Queen Latifah, LL Coo J
Last Holiday (2006), Queen Latifah, LL Cool J

Just yesterday I was thinking about two things. Specifically where I’d love to travel to next and what I need to add to my vision board for 2019. Little did I know that Last Holiday, the 2006 comedy about a shy woman who suddenly decides to change her life and live it up in a posh European hotel would offer me so much inspiration.

If you’re familiar with Last Holiday, you know that I probably don’t want to be in the main protagonist’s exact predicament. However I could most definitely do with a little more of the ’embracing life’ part.

Starring Queen Latifah, LL Cool J and Timothy Hutton, what I like most about this fun Wayne Wang-directed comedy, besides the way it has inspired me, is how much it made me laugh and smile. It’s exactly what I needed this festive season.

Latifah and her natural charisma are the reasons I tuned in at all. Other reasons I stayed watching include the many engaging characters; from Latifah’s Georgia, Chef Didier, who’s well played by Gerard Depardieu, LL Cool J’s Sean and all the staff at Grandhotel Pupp.

As for everything else in Last Holiday, key highlights include the cinematography, the way food is featured and all the well-chosen fancy outfits worn by Georgia while in Europe.

If I had to pick a moment in Last Holiday that I loved that little bit less, I’d choose the not completely believable way the snowboarding scene played out. Overall though, Last Holiday is a fun and funny holiday/Christmas movie that will put a smile on your face and have you looking forward as you think about how to best live the coming year(s).

Watch it because it has a certain silly quality that’s good for your mood.

THE PRINCESS SWITCH (2018): New Trailer From Vanessa Hudgens, Nick Sagar, Suanne Braun, Sam Palladio…

A week before Christmas, a Chicago baker meets a soon-to-be princess who looks exactly like her. They decide to trade places and before too long, they get more than comfortable in their new lives.

Directed by Mike Rohl, the key cast of The Princess Switch includes Vanessa Hudgens, Nick Sagar, Suanne Braun, Sam and Palladio.

As clichéd and overly cheesy as this clearly is, I’ll probably still watch it because the Christmas season is a time for cheesy, romantic movies that ‘I couldn’t possibly…’ during other times of the year.

Sam Palladio, Nick Sagar, Mark Fleischmann and Adi Gheo also star.

The Princess Switch Release Dates: November 16th, 2018 (US)…

A BAD MOMS CHRISTMAS (2017): New Trailer From Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn…

Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn are back in the sequel to Bad Moms (2016), A Bad Moms Christmas.

Written/directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, this time it’s the festive season, and the mothers of the Bad Moms are in town.

Truth be told, I wasn’t best pleased with the first Bad Moms (2016) movie. There were a number of things about the story that disappointed me. As such, a part of me wants to steer completely clear of this follow-up. It’s just that there’s also a part of me that needs to know whether this sequel will be equally bad, worse or better.

Let’s just say, I don’t want to give up on Mila Kunis movies just yet. I’m also a big Christine Baranski fan, which means I can at least be sure that her character will put a smile on my face.

Susan Sarandon Oona Laurence and Emjay Anthony also star.

A Bad Moms Christmas Release Dates: November 3rd, 2017 (US & UK)…

THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY (2013): For The Friendships, Humour & Well Executed Dramatics…

The Best Man Holiday (2013), Terrence Howard, Nia Long, Eddie Cibrian

Taye Diggs, Terence Howard, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Morris Chestnut, Melissa De Sousa, Monica Calhoun and Harold Perrineau are all back and joined by Eddie Cibrian and John Michael Higgins in The Best Man Holiday (2013); the sequel to the 1999 hit, The Best Man.

I don’t remember actually wishing for a sequel but I sure am glad that it came. I’m even more glad because the write/director of both movies, Malcolm D. Lee took his sweet time with the second film; something that more often than not,  leads to a better quality finished product.

Set during the holiday/Christmas period, The Best Man Holiday (2013) brings seasonal cheer and laughter, thanks to the fun banter between the characters. As was the case with the first movie, everything is not all big smiles and good times.

The movie has a healthy mix of memorable comedy and well executed dramatic moments. One of my favourites of the former category has to be John Michael Higgins’s character’s response to Harper (Taye Diggs) when Harper says ‘I don’t even know if biographies is my thing.’

Watch it if you want to experience some laughter, drama and friendship, especially in testing times.

If you love the characters as much I do, let’s all cross our fingers and hope for something great because a third instalment called The Best Man Wedding has been announced.

LOVE THE COOPERS (2015): The Things I Liked…

Christmas With The Coopers (2015), Olivia Wilde, Jake Lacy
Christmas With The Coopers (2015), Olivia Wilde, Jake Lacy

I would describe Love The Coopers as less like Elf (2003) and more like ABC TV series, Brothers & Sisters.

Directed by Jessie Nelson and starring John Goodman, Diane Keaton, Ed Helms, Olivia Wilde and Steve Martin,  Love the Coopers is one of those holiday films that reminds you that every family has unpleasant tensions and challenging relationships. Nevertheless, the good news is, in this film, the tense moments are wisely interspersed with humour and cheer.

The character Wilde plays is my favourite, partly because I find Wilde rather likeable in real life. Also, I relate most to aspects of her character, above all the others.

I wanted to watch something that didn’t demand too much from me, and that’s exactly what I got. Love the Coopers is unlikely to make my list of top 10 favourite Christmas movies, but it is easy, relaxing viewing with a side of romance – and surely, one can always make a little time for something like that.

Anthony Mackie, Jake Lacy, Amanda Seyfried and Marisa Tomei also star.
