THE MIDNIGHT SKY (2020): The Things I Liked…

The Midnight Sky (2020), George Clooney, Netflix
The Midnight Sky (2020), George Clooney, Netflix

George Clooney’s latest acting/directorial effort, The Midnight Sky, has scenes that will likely stay with you for quite some time. Scenes linked to the visual presentation and specific scenes.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where the Earth has suffered a mysterious global catastrophe, Clooney’s character is Augustine, a lonely scientist on a race to stop an astronaut and her team from returning to Earth.

Before watching the movie, I encountered a review headline for The Midnight Sky that used the word ‘boring.’ Now, as any serious Clooney, Kyle Chandler, Felicity Jones and David Oyelowo fan would do, I had to find out for myself if I agreed.

After viewing, even though the film’s tense and anxiety-inducing moments initially kept me engaged, there were a few instances when I reached for my phone, partly due to the story’s editing and the slower pace of events. However, I was also trying to distract myself from emotional stress caused by the bleak realities of Augustine and the astronauts’ predicaments.

There’s even a specific scene where you know a tragedy is happening any moment now. And you’re not sure you want to hang around to see it unfold, partly because you’re mad that you were able to guess what was coming next. But you’re also displeased because you’re not a big fan of the continued depressing mood of the story, and you want some normalcy again.

Curiosity about the ending, the acting, plus visual moments that impressed, are what kept me watching The Midnight Sky. Generally, everyone performs well. Two specific highlights are the close-up of David Oyelowo’s character’s profile as he digests the meaning of a very unsettling bit of news. And the second is every time the camera was on young Caoilinn Springall, who plays Iris.

The most visually impressive moments include the colour-rich scene at the beginning that features Jupiter. Another at a later stage involves the removal of a helmet.

Give The Midnight Sky a chance if you’re curious. The premise is certainly intriguing. It’s just unfortunate that I’m convinced there’s a more engaging story, with better character development and maybe even a less moody/depressing creative execution, I could have enjoyed far more.

NOBODY (2021): New Trailer From Bob Odenkirk, Connie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd…

Nobody (2021), Bob Odenkirk, Universal Pictures
Nobody (2021), Bob Odenkirk, Universal Pictures

Read my spoiler-free movie review of  Nobody (2021).

When you help a woman who’s being harassed by a group of men, one of the things that can happen is you become the target of a vengeful drug lord.

At least that’s the case for Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) in new action/crime/drama Nobody.

Directed by Ilya Naishuller; additional key cast includes Connie Nielsen and Christopher Lloyd.

The action sequences in this trailer appear fun, cleverly shot and funny. I’m looking forward to finding out the ways in which Nobody is different from Keanu Reeves’s very popular John Wick (2014). Perhaps it’s equally similar and different. Especially considering the revenge plot and the fact that both films share a producer.

Bring on the madness and let’s get back that ‘goddam kitty cat bracelet!’

J.P. Manoux, Paul Essiembre, Humberly González, Araya Mengesha, Gage Munroe, Paisley Cadorath, Aleksey Serebryakov and RZA also star.

Nobody Release Dates: March 26th, 2021 (US), April 23rd, 2021 (UK)…

PALMER (2021): New Trailer From Justin Timberlake, Ryder Allen, Juno Temple June Squibb…

Palmer (2021), Justin Timberlake, Apple TV+
Palmer (2021), Justin Timberlake, Apple TV+

Starring Justin Timberlake, Juno Temple, Ryder Allen, and June Squibb; Palmer is the story of the friendship between Eddie Palmer, an ex-convict (Timberlake) and a young boy (Allen) from a troubled home.

Directed by Fisher Stevens, Additional key cast includes Dean Winters, Alisha Wainwright, Wynn Everett and Jesse C. Boyd.

Firstly, random fact: the three main adult stars of this movie all have first names that start with J. Second, I’m in for what appears to be a notable Timberlake performance.

Lastly, I just want to see the evolution of Eddie’s friendship with the young boy. Especially after the child’s response soon after 1:25 into the trailer.

Charmin Lee, Jake Brennan, J.D. Evermore, Stephen Louis Grush, Lance E. Nichols, Stacie Davis, Carson Minniear, Hero Hunter and Theodus Crane also star.

Palmer Release Dates: January 29th, 2021, Apple TV+…

THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER (2021): New Trailer Starring Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl…

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Marvel Entertainment
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Marvel Entertainment

Stars of Marvel’s Avengers movies, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are back in new Marvel Entertainment series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

With additional key cast including Wyatt Russell, Emily VanCamp and Daniel Brühl; the show will focus on Mackie and Stan’s Falcon and The Winter Soldier characters. More detail yet to be confirmed. Howver, you can bet that the world is going to need saving.

I’m interested to see whether the series will feel as epic as the movies. I’mean, it’s Marvel, which means at that the very least, it’s going to come incredibly close.

I’m also curious about the Mackie/Stan dynamic. Particularly since it already feels strange knowing that Steve Rogers/Captain American is nowhere in sight.

Desmond Chiam, John Gettier, Miki Ishikawa, Adepero Oduye, Shane Berengue and Neal Kodinsky also star.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Release Dates: March 19th, 2021 (US), Disney+…

FRENCH EXIT (2020): New Trailer From Michelle Pfeiffer, Lucas Hedges, Tracy Letts, Imogen Poots…

French Exit (2020), Michelle Pfeiffer, Sony Pictures Classics
French Exit (2020), Michelle Pfeiffer, Sony Pictures Classics

In new comedy/drama French Exit, Michelle Pfeiffer is Frances Price; an ageing Manhattan socialite who’s fast running out the money she inherited. And so she must move to a small apartment in Paris with her son and cat.

Directed by Azazel Jacobs; additional key cast includes Imogen Poots, Lucas Hedges, Tracy Letts and Danielle Macdonald.

No matter how many times I see Pfeiffer in other films, the mere hearing or reading of her name always brings up an image of her iconic work as Cat Woman in Batman Returns (1992).

The talented cast almost guarantees that I’ll watch this one. May it be even more amusing than this trailer suggests.

Valerie Mahaffey, Isaach De Bankolé, Daniel di Tomasso, Eddie Holland, Matt Holland, Christine Lan, Robert Higden, Larry Dayand Laura Mitchell also star.

French Exit Release Dates: February 12th, 2021 (US); February 26th, 2021 (UK)…
