CRIME 101 (2026): The Things I Liked…

Well-acted, stylish, moody, and well-paced, those are four words that come to mind as I watched Crime 101. Very easy to watch and visually pleasing are a few others.

What surprised me about director and co-writer Bart Layton’s film, which follows an elusive thief (Chris Hemsworth) teaming up with an insurance broker (Halle Berry) while being pursued by a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo), is how familiar the resolution of Hemsworth’s character’s worst-case scenario feels. It’s the one part of the film I wish had unfolded in a less clichéd and more satisfying way.

To be clear, I’m not saying that I predicted everything that happens in the last quarter of the movie, but I did see a key element of the ending coming, which is never ideal.

That said, Crime 101 may not be my new favourite heist film, as I’d hoped, but I’d still probably watch much of it again because of everything else it gets right.

Watch it if you’re curious.

PEAKY BLINDERS – THE IMMORTAL MAN (2026): New Trailer Starring Cillian Murphy, Barry Keoghan, Rebecca Ferguson, Stephen Graham…

Directed by Tom Harper and written by Steven Knight, Peaky Blinders – The Immortal Man is a continuation of the story of Thomas Shelby

Shelby is the main character in the hit 6-season series Peaky Blinders (2013-2022), a 1900s England-set gangster family epic starring Cillian Murphy.

Additional key cast includes Barry Keoghan, Rebecca Ferguson and Stephen Graham

If the success of the series is anything to go by, this should be worthwhile. It is Murphy, Graham and Keoghan who are always great, after all.

Have you seen the Peaky Blinders series? I haven’t, and I’m guessing it’s enjoyed more by male audiences

Sophie Rundle, Tim Roth, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Ned Dennehy, Jay Lycurgo, Packy Lee, Sam Baker Jones, Martin Angerbauer, Ian Peck, Mark Wilkinson, Spencer Elcock, Mauricio Knipp-Armijo and Jasna Anderson also star.

Peaky Blinders – The Immortal Man Release Dates: March 20th, 2026 (US & UK)…

Co-written/directed by Bart Layton, Crime 101 is the latest thriller from Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo and Barry Keoghan.

In Layton’s story, an insurance broker (Berry) and an elusive thief team up for a multi-million dollar heist, with a relentless detective on their tail. Who wins? That is the question.

Could this be the good heist movie I’ve been dreaming of? It certainly looks stylish and sexy enough, and the cast is great. The story and execution just have to deliver, and looking at Layton’s filmography, there’s hope, boys and girls. There is much hope.

I feel like I don’t even have to ask, but you’re going to watch this, aren’t you?

Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Nick Nolte, Babak Tafti, Peter Banifaz, Patrick Mulvey, Tate Donovan, Crosby Fitzgerald, Hossein Mardani, Payman Maadi and Deborah Hedwall also star.

Crime 101 Release Dates: February 13th, 2026 (US & UK)…

SALTBURN (2023): The Things I Liked…

There’s been plenty of talk about writer/director Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn  since it hit the film festival circuit in August 2023. And I’ve finally given in and watched the comedy/drama/thriller. A film that turned out to be an equally delightful and shocking experience. One that follows Oliver (Barry Keoghan), an Oxford University student who becomes obsessed with his classmate, the charismatic and aristocratic Felix (Jacob Elordi).

Also starring Rosamund Pike, Archie Madekwe and Carey Mulligan, things soon take quite the unexpected turn once Felix invites Oliver to his eccentric family’s vast estate for an unforgettable summer.

It’s the dialogue and performances that delighted me most, especially all the lines delivered to perfection by Mulligan and Pike’s characters. As for the more shocking aspects, let’s just say it has to do with two specific moments that reveal the extent of Oliver’s unsettling obsession and how that manifests.

In terms of my experience of the story, I had the most fun before the dark turn, which wasn’t unexpected considering how I found myself waiting for the other shoe to drop for much of the film. The general gist of what Saltburn is about and how aspects of the story unfold may not be new, but the two most shocking events and the super wonderful dialogue are reason enough to see it for yourself.

Last but not least, Saltburn features a soundtrack of what seemed to be largely hit British songs of the noughties. I say give Saltburn a chance if you’re curious and for all the guaranteed giggles courtesy of the dialogue, particularly once Oliver arrives at Felix’s family estate.

Set in rural Ireland, Calm With Horses is a new drama starring Cosmo Jarvis as Douglas ‘Arm’ Armstrong, the feared enforcer for the drug-dealing Devers family. Things get especially challenging when Arm’s loyalties are tested by being asked to kill for the first time.

Directed by Nick Rowland, additional key cast includes Barry Keoghan, Ned Dennehy and Niamh Algar.

This is not loyalty. It’s servitude

I rather like the above line. Particularly since I’m sure that it’s both servitude and loyalty in Arm’s case.

I’ll be watching to find out what Arm decides and precisely how he plans to execute, no pun intended.

Anthony Welsh, David Wilmot, Hazel Doupe, Lee Byford, Simone Kirby, Roisin O’Neill, Ryan McParland, Toni O’Rourke, Stephen McDade, Liam Carney and John Paul O’Driscoll also star.

Calm With Horses Release Dates: March 6th, 2020 (UK)
