Starring Ben Stiller, Michael Sheen, Jermaine Clement, Austin Abrams and directed by Mike White, Brad’s Status is a new comedy about a father who feels inferior about his life choices. It’s after meeting up with an old friend that he starts to question everything.
I like the fact that Brad’s Status is similarly about a man having to evaluate his life and how he has lived.
Stiller is always believable in everything he does and I’m sure I’ll enjoy learning from Brad about how to and most likely, how not to handle what looks like a sudden mid-life crisis.
Starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell, I’ll start by confirming that without question, the original Zoolander (2001) movie is better. The story in the first movie seemed so much simpler in comparison and I found that I loved every single cameo, including Paris Hilton, Billy Zane and especially David Bowie.
The cameos in Zoolander 2, particularly the ones from the world of fashion, are disappointing, on account of dodgy acting skills all round. Valentino, Tommy Hilfiger, Anna Wintour and Marc Jacobs – along with Justin Bieber all did the best they could, of course. Nevertheless, I was still left wanting.
Overall, nothing was half as annoying as Kyle Mooney’s Don Atari. The character’s extreme and irritating hipster ways made it hard to see why he had to be there at all.
Zoolander 2 (2016), Will Ferrell, Nathan Lee Graham
I enjoyed the use of a soundtrack that definitely seemed more at home in a superhero movie. Will Ferrell’s Jacobim Mugato, my very favourite character from the original film is the one I couldn’t wait to see again, and what a joyful reunion it turned out to be. I remember laughing particularly loudly at his line about the number of square meals fed to Derek Jr., a character played very well by young Cyrus Arnold.
I’m a big fan of the first Zoolander movie. This sequel, though not an improvement on the original, I found it worth it for the handful of jokes that do land successfully, and for the opportunity to reminisce about how happy I was to have come across the original film in the first place.
Watch Zoolander 2, especially if you loved the original and you’re as curious as I am. Should you watch just one of these movies instead of both, please let it be Zoolander (2001).
Witten and directed by Noah Baumbach; While We’re Young stars Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts as a middle aged couple, who are having difficulty letting go of the idea of themselves as young. Especially so, after they meet and befriend two 25 year olds played by Amanda Seyfried and Adam Driver.
The jokes about ageing are my favourite moments in While We’re Young. I also enjoyed the character study of the man Stiller plays. In particular, the way he’s an example of what it can be like during middle age, when certain paths/projects that had been an option years before, end up not being committed to or completed.
I really hope that when it’s my turn, I’ll be able to handle the idea of youth being something in my past with at least a touch of grace. However, based on the sizeable meltdown I had when I turned twenty. I wouldn’t take the risk of betting on it.
Written by Justin Theroux and directed by Ben Stiller, the teaser trailer for Zoolander 2 has arrived and a tease it absolutely is!
The sequel also stars Owen Wilson, Olivia Munn, Penelope Cruz, Kristen Wiig, billy Zane, Fred Armisen, and Christine Taylor.
I can’t wait to see Will Ferrell as Jacobim Mugatu. His performance in the original Zoolander (2001) film is one of my favourite Ferrell portrayals. Time to re-watch it, I think.
I could also do with a reminder of Zoolander’s impressive patented poses: Blue Steel, Ferrari, La Tigre and of course, Magnum.
