KEVIN HART – WHAT NOW? (2016): The Thing I Liked…

Kevin Hart - What Now? (2016), Kevin Hart

I wanted Kevin Hart – What Now? to be great, but to my surprise and disappointment, I spent very little time laughing. In trying to figure out why, I’ve reached the conclusion that as someone who’s been a fan of Hart’s comedy since the days of his earlier standup specials; I’m a Grown Little Man (2009), Seriously Funny (2010) and Laugh at My Pain (2011), I’m at the stage now where I find myself overly familiar with a lot of his jokes. Particularly the ones that reference his father, children, height and the way his vertically challenged status makes him far from a hero whenever his physical wellbeing is threatened.

Even though in Kevin Hart – What Now? Hart talks about a few other things including his then fiancé (now wife), I found myself reminiscing about his earlier work because what I was watching wasn’t connecting for me. It’s possible that part of the problem is, like any comedy film that could have been better, many of the good jokes and punchlines were heard and laughed at during the  promotional phase.

As for the production, Hart’s use of digital visual aids to help paint a picture for the audience as he delivered his jokes is a refreshing addition to his routine. Unfortunately though, I found it mostly distracting rather than a welcome addition.

I sat down to Kevin Hart – What Now? hoping for new jokes that didn’t rely too much on all the traits I already know about Hart’s comedy persona/topics, but it wasn’t to be. I guess things can get stale when you and those close to you are the main source material instead of new and potentially more interesting topics. I.e., what’s happening in the wider world.

Besides the less than expected number of jokes I the whole thing wasn’t a waste of time. What I enjoyed most of all was the fifteen minute intro to the main event. Kevin Hart, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle, David Meunier and Ed Helms made it fun and funny.

I say watch Kevin Hart – What Now? if you’re curious enough, and or you’re a very serious Hart fan. I still love Hart. At this point, I just much prefer his earlier work.

THE HANGOVER (2009) Review: One Of The Very Best…

The Hangover (2009), Zach Gaifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, Bradley Cooper
The Hangover (2009), Zach Gaifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, Bradley Cooper

Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha, there’s plenty to love about the The Hangover. In fact, the Todd Phillips-directed comedy is one of those movies that left me with nothing bad to say.

Just to be clear though, the above statement is reserved only for this 2009 movie and not the two embarrassing ‘get as much money out of this as possible whilst we still can’ sequels that shamelessly followed. Moving on…

The reasons I love the hangover are obvious. The story is great, I saw exactly none of the surprising twists and turns coming, the casting is excellent, as is the writing and soundtrack. There’s also the great chemistry between the four main characters, resulting in a depiction of a truly believable bromance that serves the story perfectly.

Everything that happened in The Hangover felt so real to me. So much so that the brilliant Inbetweeners (2008-2010) comedy series (the UK original version) came to mind, because, it too has that combination of the believable male friendship dynamic and comedy.

There are too many great moments in The Hangover for me to pick just one. However, who, after seeing this movie has been able to say the word ‘retard’ in just one way?

I haven’t watched all the movies of this sub-genre, however, I’m committing to calling The Hangover one of, if not the most epic ‘bachelor party shenanigans’ movie ever made. The Hangover also helped wake me up to the charms of Bradley Cooper. By ‘charms’ I mean his acting talents. And yes, that suit in the hotel room scene when he and Justin Bartha’s character walk into Stu’s room definitely contributed to my charmed state. Looking that good combined with such evident swagger seldom goes unnoticed. You see, the typos on my blog aside, attention to detail has never been my problem.

Watch The Hangover again and again for an entertaining ride from beginning to glorious end.

LOVE THE COOPERS (2015): The Things I Liked…

Christmas With The Coopers (2015), Olivia Wilde, Jake Lacy
Christmas With The Coopers (2015), Olivia Wilde, Jake Lacy

I would describe Love The Coopers as less like Elf (2003) and more like ABC TV series, Brothers & Sisters.

Directed by Jessie Nelson and starring John Goodman, Diane Keaton, Ed Helms, Olivia Wilde and Steve Martin,  Love the Coopers is one of those holiday films that reminds you that every family has unpleasant tensions and challenging relationships. Nevertheless, the good news is, in this film, the tense moments are wisely interspersed with humour and cheer.

The character Wilde plays is my favourite, partly because I find Wilde rather likeable in real life. Also, I relate most to aspects of her character, above all the others.

I wanted to watch something that didn’t demand too much from me, and that’s exactly what I got. Love the Coopers is unlikely to make my list of top 10 favourite Christmas movies, but it is easy, relaxing viewing with a side of romance – and surely, one can always make a little time for something like that.

Anthony Mackie, Jake Lacy, Amanda Seyfried and Marisa Tomei also star.

Summer isn’t over yet but if you didn’t already know, it’s time for the Christmas movie trailer. And Love The Coopers is the first one I’ve seen for 2015.

Does it look refreshingly different? No, but it does look like this Jessie Nelson-directed seasonal film will provide precisely the mildly amusing, yet heartwarming entertainment one can enjoy after stuffing one’s face on the Lord’s special day.

The cast list includes familiar names like Olivia Wilde, Diane Keaton, John Goodman, Amanda Seyfried, Marisa Tomei and Anthony Mackie.

Out November 2015 (U.S.) and December 2015 (U.K.)
