When you’re a journalist and you come across a secret trove of love letters with no home address, there’s surely only one thing you can do, right? You decide to solve the mystery of the forbidden love and track down the lovers.

Such is the premise of director Augustine Frizzell’s drama/romance The Last Letter from Your Lover. A film that focuses on a pair of interwoven stories set in the past (1965) and present. Starring Callum Turner, Felicity Jones, Shailene Woodley and Joe Alwyn The Last Letter from Your Lover is based on the novel of the same name by Jojo Moyes.

The love story based in the past is the primary reason I’m interested. Then there’s Woodley’s character – Jennifer Stirling’s elegant style, plus my commitment to seeing her free of Alwyn’s seemingly hateful Laurence. Of course I’ll be there on Platform 2, Friday, at 7:15pm. Mind you, only to bear witness and nothing more.

Emma Appleton, Ben Cross, Ncuti Gatwa, Christian Brassington, Nabhaan Rizwan, Vilhelm Blomgren, Diana Kent, Ann Ogbomo, Alfredo Tavares, Louis James and Matt Mella also star.

The Last Letter from Your Lover Release Dates: July 23rd, 2021 (US); August 6th, 2021 (UK)…

THE MIDNIGHT SKY (2020): The Things I Liked…

The Midnight Sky (2020), George Clooney, Netflix
The Midnight Sky (2020), George Clooney, Netflix

George Clooney’s latest acting/directorial effort The Midnight Sky has scenes that will likely stay with you for quite some time. Scenes linked to the visual presentation and specific performance moments.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where the earth has suffered a mysterious global catastrophe; Clooney’s character is Augustine, a lonely scientist on a race to stop an astronaut and her team from returning back to earth.

Before watching the movie, I encountered a review headline for The Midnight Sky that used the word ‘boring.’ Now, as any serious Clooney, Kyle Chandler, Felicity Jones and David Oyelowo fan would do, I had to find out for myself if I agreed.

Post viewing, I must say that even though the films tense and anxiety-inducing moments initially kept me engaged, there soon a came a time or two when I reached for my phone; partly due to the story editing and things happening at a slower pace than preferred. However, I was also trying to distract myself from emotional stress. That caused by the bleak realities of Augustine and the astronauts’ situations.

There’s even a specific scene where you know a tragedy is happening any moment now. And you’re not sure you want to hang around to see it unfold; partly because you’re mad that you were able to guess what was coming next. But you’re also displeased because you’re not a big fan of the continued depressing mood of the story and you want some normalcy again.

Curiosity about the ending, the acting, plus visual moments that impressed are what kept me watching The Midnight Sky. Generally, everyone performs well. Two specific highlights being the closeup of David Oyelowo’s character’s profile as he digests the meaning of a very unsettling bit of news. And the second is every time the camera was on young Caoilinn Springall who plays Iris.

The most visually impressive moments include the colour-rich scene at the beginning that features Jupiter. Another at a later stage involves the removal of a helmet.

Give The Midnight Sky a chance if you’re curious. The premise is certainly intriguing. It’s just unfortunate that I’m convinced there’s a more engaging story, with better character development and maybe even a less moody/depressing creative execution I could have enjoyed more.

THE MIDNIGHT SKY (2020): New Trailer From George Clooney, Felicity Jones, Kyle Chandler, David Oyelowo…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of  The Midnight Sky (2020).

Directed by and starring George Clooney; The Midnight Sky is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi/drama about Augustine, a lonely scientist in the Arctic.

Augustine is on a race to stop Sully and her fellow astronauts from returning home to a mysterious global catastrophe.

Additional key cast includes Felicity Jones, Kyle Chandler, David Oyelowo and Sophie Rundle.

The music suggests an emotional film but the way Oyelowo asks: ‘Why is it so quiet?’ got me right in heart, and a little in the tear ducts.

I’ve actually been looking forward to a new Clooney movie for a while and the premise of this one is very interesting. Lastly, how disturbing is what happens at 1:38 in this trailer?

Ethan Peck, Miriam Shor, Demián Bichir, Tim Russ, Tiffany Boone, Edan Hayhurst, Lilja Nótt Þórarinsdóttir, Atli Oskar Fjalarsson, Tia Bannonn and Grant Crookes also star.

The Midnight Sky Release Dates: December 23rd, 2020 (US)…

THE AERONAUTS (2019): New Trailer From Felicity Jones, Eddie Redmayne, Phoebe Fox, Himesh Patel…

The Aeronauts is a new biography/adventure story directed by Tom Harper, that stars Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Himesh Patel and Phoebe Fox.

At the heart of the story is Amelia Wren and scientist James Glaisher, as they attempt to make discoveries in a hot air balloon, but find themselves in an epic fight for survival.

The dynamics of how the hot air balloon scenes were filmed has me curious. Green screen, I’m sure, but what else?

I’m also quite interested in the costumes, gender politics of the time (1862) and notable performances by the proven cast.

Tim McInnerny, Julian Ferro, Tom Courtenay, Vincent Perez, Kamil Lemieszewski and Rebecca Front also star.

The Aeronauts Release Dates: December 6th, 2019 (US & UK)…

ON THE BASIS OF SEX (2018): The Things I Liked…

On The Basis Of Sex (2018), Felicity Jones
On The Basis Of Sex (2018), Felicity Jones

On The Basis Of Sex, the Mimi Leder-directed biopic about US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her notable achievements, especially in her fight for equal rights, is a movie I’m disappointed to say isn’t quite all I’d hoped.

Before viewing, and thanks to the trailer, I had a certain idea of what this film might be like. However, my bubble of great expectations burst quite early on, thanks to the rather annoying opening song. And not too long after that, it became clear to me that something important was missing from Leder’s film. The missing element (a better script and or smarter execution) made a lot of On the Basis of Sex feel flat and unexciting.

Bearing in mind the huge impact of Ginsburg’s work in the United States and beyond, I really expected a more ‘epic feeling’ finished product. Instead, the thought that ‘an opportunity has definitely been missed here’ entered my mind and never left.

The scene in the US Supreme Court at the end is certainly the best, because of the words and delivery of the all-important rebuttal. I also couldn’t help but notice how wonderful it surely must have been for Ginsburg to have a support system as great as those in her immediate family. Namely, Martin Ginsburg and their daughter Jane. I really did want to love this one, but it simply wasn’t to be.

Watch it for the US Supreme Court scene, the clothes worn by Felicity Jones and if you’re really, really curious. Just know that the documentary RBG (2018) is better.
