THE GOOD NURSE (2022): The Things I Liked…

Often when movies are described as a slow burn, my heart sinks a little because it can mean that the pace is lacking in the most unsatisfying way. Luckily, it just so happens that The Good Nurse, the latest biography/crime/drama from Danish director Tobias Lindholm is the kind of slow burn you want people to mean when they describe a movie as such.

Smartly shot, well-edited and acted, Lindholm’s movie is based on a true story about an infamous caregiver who is linked to the deaths of hundreds of hospital patients. 

Oscar winners Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne both deliver notable performances. Additional highlights include the camera work, how dramatic and quieter moments are captured, plus the pairing of Noah Emmerich and Nnamdi Asomugha in their specific roles.

Watch The Good Nurse for a welcome reminder of how highly engaging a film described as a slow burn can be.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020).

Written/directed by Aaron Sorkin, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a new historical thriller about 7 people on trial for various charges surrounding the uprising at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois.

Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, Alex Sharp and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are among the key cast.

I can’t deny how happy I was to see Redmayne’s face on screen again. He’s one of my favourites, along with Baron Cohen

It’s going to be emotional but I’m quite sure it’ll be worth it because of the fantastic cast and that magic that Sorkin does so well with words.

Jeremy Strong, John Carroll Lynch, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Mark Rylance, Ben Shenkman, J.C. MacKenzie, Frank Langella and Noah Robbins also star.

The Aeronauts is a new biography / adventure story directed by Tom Harper, that stars Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Himesh Patel and Phoebe Fox.

At the heart of the story is Amelia Wren and scientist James Glaisher, as they attempt to make discoveries in a hot air balloon but find themselves in an epic fight for survival…

The dynamics of how the hot air balloon scenes were filmed has me curious. Green screen, I’m sure, but what else?

I’m actually quite interested in the costumes, gender politics of the time (1862) and notable performances by the proven cast.

Tim McInnerny, Julian Ferro, Tom Courtenay, Vincent Perez, Kamil Lemieszewski and Rebecca Front also star.

I loved Chicken Run (2000) and so would just adore it if this were as good if not better. Since the same people are behind both films, there’s definitely a good chance.
