Directed by Steven Soderbergh; new comedy/drama Let Them All Talk stars Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, Gemma Chan and Dianne Wiest.

This time we get to see Streep as a famous author who goes on a cruise with her friends and nephew, in an effort to find fun and happiness while coming to terms with her troubled past.

I’m always ready for another Streep performance. Also looking forward to the humour and finding out the reason for the tension between Bergen and Streep’s characters.

Lucas Hedges, Saskia Larsen and Pete Meads also star.

Let Then All Talk Release Dates: December 10th, 2020 (US)…

CAPTAIN MARVEL (2018): The Things I Liked…

Captain Marvel (2018), Brie Larson, Marvel Studios
Captain Marvel (2018), Brie Larson, Marvel Studios

The subject of Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios’s first superhero film with a female superhero as the main character is Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). Danvers is an officer of the United States Air Force who, following an accident, ends up becoming one of the universe’s most powerful heroes.

Also starring Lashana Lynch, Jude Law, Annette Bening and directed by Anna Boden plus Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel features the classic elements of the superhero origin story. Yet it also has a couple of satisfying twists and turns I didn’t see coming, especially since I don’t read comic books.

Well acted, adequately engaging – both story-wise and visually, what will stay with me most about this movie is the moment I realised and saw just how powerful Captain Marvel really is. A truth that had me both wowed and wondering about who the most powerful avenger actually is. I also couldn’t help but be curious about the important role Captain Marvel would eventually play in Avengers Endgame (2019).

Having seen Wonder Woman (2017), DC Comic’s first female superhero movie months prior to the Captain Marvel release, part of the reason I was drawn to the latter film was to find out which of the two movies I’d find more entertaining. In short, the answer is Wonder woman. I’m not saying I think it’s a perfect film but I do remember enjoying the humour, story, action, musical score and visual effects that little bit more.

I’m now wondering if Wonder woman will still come out in front once I’ve seen the sequels for both films, when they eventually arrive.

I’d say watch Captain Marvel if you’re curious but you probably already have. So instead I’ll ask, which movie did you prefer and why? Captain Marvel or Wonder Woman?

CRAZY RICH ASIANS (2018): The Things I Liked…

Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Constance Wu, Henry Golding
Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Constance Wu, Henry Golding

Crazy Rich Asians, the story of New Yorker Rachel and her trip to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick to meet his family, and attend his best friend’s wedding is a much better film than I expected.

Starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh and Gemma Chan, Crazy Rich Asians truly exceeded my expectations. Particularly my assumption based on the trailer that it would be anything like the Fifty Shades Of Grey romance and films. I’m therefore happy confirm that the only key similarities between both movies start end with ‘rich guy falls in love with non-rich girl’.

I really liked director Jon M. Chu’s beautiful execution of bestselling Author Kevin Kwan’s story. My favourite scenes include the very first scene at the hotel and the surprise Mahjong game towards the end. Then there’s of course the wedding that got Nick and Rachel to Singapore in the first place. A wedding that may just be my favourite movie wedding of all time, thanks to everything that happens in that scene including Kina Grannis’s version of ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love.

Seeing all the stunning locations, homes and expensive style were definitely a highlight too, as expected. However, the thing that really made watching Crazy Rich Asians a true pleasure for me is the the humour that came in the ‘crazy’ part of Crazy Rich Asians.

If you haven’t already seen this beautiful movie, make time for all the reasons above and for the romance, of course. The romance!

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Captain Marvel (2018).

Directed by Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck and set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is the story of Carol Danvers. Danvers becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Key cast includes Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Gemma Chan Mckenna Grace…

Once again, another well edited trailer from Marvel Studios and featuring just the right music.

I’m in to see what I think is Marvel’s first female superhero movie. The ‘Earth caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races’ scenario is certainly very intriguing too. I wonder if I’ll still love Wonder Woman most after watching this movie.

Annette Bening, Jude Law, Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou also star.

Captain Marvel Release Dates: March 8th, 2019 (US & UK)…

MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS (2018): New Trailer From Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan, Guy Pearce, Gemma Chan…

Mary Queen Of Scots (2018), Saoirse Ronan
Mary Queen Of Scots (2018), Saoirse Ronan

Read my spoiler-free movie review of  Mary Queen Of Scots.

From director Josie Rourke, Mary Queen Of Scots is a new historical drama about the relationship between Elizabeth I, Queen of England, and her cousin Mary Stuart.

Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie,  Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn and Gemma Chan star…

First of all, isn’t it special and interesting that two Australian actors have had the opportunity to play Elizabeth I on the big screen twenty years apart? Cate Blanchett’s performance in Elizabeth (1998) is still so powerful and fresh in my mind.

When I first saw Margot in this trailer, I wasn’t sure… but then as the trailer played some more, my faith increased. The real main reason I can’t wait to see this one is the brilliant Ronan. I just want to see her deliver all the great dialogue that wonderful way she knows how. I’ll also be marvelling at the visual spectacle of it all, of course.

Bring on the rivalry!

David Tennant, Brendan Coyle and Jack Lowden also star.
