CARNAGE (2011): The Things I Liked…

Carnage (2011), John C. Reilly, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz, Kate Winslet
Carnage (2011), John C. Reilly, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz, Kate Winslet

After seeing the trailer for Roman Polanski’s Carnage, I immediately had high hopes because of the exceptional cast. Namely, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, John C. Reilly and Jodie Foster. These seasoned performers play two sets of parents who decide to meet at one of their homes after their sons are involved in a fight. Before too long, as you can imagine, things get pretty dramatic and amusing.

Based on the play by Yasmina Reza, understandably, 98% of this film is set in one room. This is far from a bad thing because at no point did I yearn for different scenery; everything that happened was just that engaging.

The dialogue in Carnage is beautifully written and delivered. The lines spoken by Waltz’s character made me laugh the most, thanks in part to his character’s highly committed relationship with his phone. One might even argue that, though uncredited, that phone is very much a key member of the cast.

There’s also the highlight that’s the seriously uptight and judgemental mother played by Foster. I confess that I saw a little bit of myself in all the four main people in this story. However, I shan’t divulge which one person in particular.

I really enjoyed this movie. In some ways, more so because I’ve never seen the play. I therefore don’t have anything to compare it to. And, besides amusing me, Carnage highlighted the fact that the cause of most, if not all, personal conflict is judgment. Particularly judgment of the blatant and unapologetic variety.

Watch it because it’s good and fun.

KONG – SKULL ISLAND (2017): The Things I Liked…

Kong - Skull Island (2017), Tom Hiddleston.
Kong – Skull Island (2017), Tom Hiddleston

Telling the origin story of King Kong – the giant movie monster that looks like an ape; Kong -Skull Island follows a group of scientists who enter an uncharted island in the Pacific looking for monsters. They do not arrive with peaceful intentions and therefore end up having to fight to escape with their lives.

If you’ve seen at least one previous King Kong movie, then you know that at some point, Kong ends up in New York city against his will. None of that happens in director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’s fun adventure. At least not in this first instalment. What we do get to see resembles something an aggressor might expect to face when they force their way into a person’s home uninvited; a bloody good fight for survival.

A tear or two definitely escaped my eyes as I watched this film, because I’m a sensitive soul and Kong was peacefully minding his business before ‘the bad men came’. I may have also shed a few tears because of the knowledge that a certain handsome and well-voiced Mr. Hiddleston may probably never, ever, personally escort me to safety through a treacherous jungle, let alone across a busy street.

Besides the good performances by Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly to name just a few, the well-choreographed human vs monster and monster vs monster showdowns, the story, special effects, musical score and cinematography all did a great job of keeping me engaged throughout.

Watch Kong – Skull Island because it’s good.

THE LITTLE HOURS (2017): New Trailer From Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Dave Franco, Fred Armisen…

The Little Hours (2017), Kate Micucci, Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza

Starring Aubrey Plaza, Fred Armisen, Alison Brie and Dave Franco, The Little Hours is a new comedy set in the Middle Ages. The story follows a young servant who is fleeing from his master and takes refuge at a convent full of emotionally unstable nuns.

I want to find out where writer/director Jeff Baena goes with this seemingly crazy, fun story.  Maybe it’ll become one of my favourite comedies. Maybe?

Nick Offerman, John C Reilly, Kate Micucci and Molly Shannon also star.

The Little Hours Release Dates: June 30th, 2017 (US)…

TALE OF TALES (2015): The Things I Liked…

Tale Of Tales (2015), Salma Hayek
Tale Of Tales (2015), Salma Hayek

Based on the celebrated fairytales of Giambattista Basile and directed by Matteo Garrone; Tale Of Tales which stars Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel and  Toby Jones is the story of three neighbouring castles and the troubled rulers within.

Not long after Tale Of Tales began, I found myself wanting some of the players in the movie to meet and be connected somehow. Reason being, in my mind, that’s at least one option that could have increased the chance of an overall more satisfying film experience. I’m still not convinced that Tale Of Tales needed to be more than two hours long. A tighter edit and perhaps two tales instead of three would have allowed for some of the gaps in the story to be filled in a more satisfying way.

Salma Hayek’s performance as the jealous Queen of Longtrellis is the one I enjoyed most.  I also appreciated the cinematography, makeup and of course, the costumes. The most exciting part of the whole movie, for me at least began at the point that the princess found hope when there was none.

By the end of Tale Of Tales, I knew one thing for sure and that is this: I don’t completely get it. The story of the jealous queen I understand, the story of the mad king and his daughter is relatively straight forward enough. But that of the nymphomaniac king and the two wrinkly sisters? I understand the sister dynamic and a lustful king but everything definitely could have been woven together in a more satisfying way.

Watch Tale Of Tales if you must. I was compelled because of the costumes, cinematography and Salma Hayek.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Kong – Skull island (2017).

The full trailer for the Jordan Vogt-Roberts-directed origin story of King Kong is here.

Starring Brie Larson Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John C Reilly and Thomas Mann, the action/fantasy/adventure that is Kong – Skull Island looks good.

I like this trailer. Along with the cinematography and special effects that were first seen in the Kong – Skull Island Comic-Con trailer, I’m now also looking forward to the humour, courtesy of John C. Reilly’s character.

Corey Hawkins, Toby Kebbell and Jason Mitchell also star.

Kong – Skull Island Release Dates: March 10th, 2017 (US & UK); March 9th, 2017 (GER)…
