THE GENTLEMEN (2024): The Things I Liked…

The Gentlemen (2024), Kaya Scodelario, Theo James, Netflix

Not watching Netflix’s eight-episode series The Gentlemen (2024) was never truly an option. Especially since I adored the original 2019 Guy Ritchie movie of the same name, starring Matthew McConaughey.

The Gentlemen (2024) is watchable and Theo James doesn’t do badly as Eddie Halstead, a man unknowingly thrust into the criminal underworld after inheriting a large estate from his father. Nevertheless, the series isn’t devoid of some irritations, minor or otherwise.

For example, things only start to look promising to me at the end of episode one, which for some is reasonable. However, not when you’re accustomed to the pace, story edit and sophistication of the 2019 movie.

Secondly, I found Freddie to be an incredibly annoying liability. Dare I admit, I may have even wished for his character to be killed off because his shenanigans and general attitude were simply too irritating.

My third issue with the series stems from the criminals in charge not being more careful of the obvious weak links in their operation. And yes, I mean the Jimmy character played by Michael Vu. Even though Eddie is new to the world of crime, surely everyone knows that no one is more of a liability than a person who is high on their own supply?

In summary, did The Gentlemen series need to be made? No. Because the general execution, though not terrible, isn’t as engaging, exciting, sophisticated or fun, even with Eddie’s excellent sense of style.

Still, I say watch it if you’re curious enough, and hopefully, you won’t miss too much about the original.

THE GENTLEMEN (2024): New Trailer From Theo James, Kaya Scodelario, Ray Winstone, Christian Di Sciullo, Daniel Ings…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The Gentlemen (2024).

Matthew McConaughey’s The Gentlemen, directed/co-written by Guy Ritchie, and one of my favourite films of 2019 has a promising new continuation in the shape of a Netflix series.

Theo James stars as Eddie Halstead, a man who inherits a large estate from his father while unaware that it fronts McConaughey’s character, Michael Pearson’s drug empire. With zero crime experience, Eddie must now take over the operation or lose the entire estate.

I’m already working on leaving my expectations behind when it comes to how much I anticipate that I’ll love this compared to McConaughey’s film, which I fully enjoyed.

I’m watching for the nostalgia, hoping for the best and rather curious about how James’s Eddie is going to take to the world of crime.

With Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn (2023) and now this, I guess I’m currently in a season of watching films/series about different versions of the British aristocrat.

Have you seen McConaughey’s The Gentlemen? Will you be watching this iteration, especially with the knowledge that Guy Ritchie wrote and directed at least one episode?

CRAWL (2019): New Trailer From Kaya Scodelario, Barry Pepper, Ross Anderson…

Crawl (2019), Kaya Scodelario, Paramount Pictures
Crawl (2019), Kaya Scodelario, Paramount Pictures

Directed by Alexandre Aja, new horror/thriller Crawl stars Kaya Scodelario, Barry Pepper and Ross Anderson.

It’s a Florida set story about a young woman fighting for her life against alligators, as she tries to save her father during a category five hurricane.

My favourite part in this trailer is when she’s injured but tells her dad she’s fine so he won’t worry because there’s little he can do to help her in his current state.

I also appreciate that it’s the daughter trying to save her dad during a natural disaster and not the other war round.

I wish that I had found what happens at 1:12 into the trailer more convincing. Who knows, maybe that’s supposed to be part of the fun of it all.

Anson Boon, Colin McFarlane, George Somner, Jose Palma, Annamaria Serda and Ami Metcalf also star.

Crawl Release Dates: July 12th, 2019 (US); August 9th, 2019 (UK)…

Director Wes Ball is back with stars Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario in Maze Runner – The Death Cure.

In this third instalment, young Thomas is determined to find a cure to a deadly disease called the “Flare”.

Why will I watch this, you may wonder. Well, the truth is, I feel as though I began, so I must finish. Not that I’m this committed to all films, let alone franchises that I start watching.

There’s also the horrible on-set accident that nearly ended Mr. O’Brien. I kind of want to watch and remember how close it came to him not being here, while being very glad that he is. He is a young man in his prime after all.

Nathalie Emmanuel and Walton Goggins also star.

Maze Runner – The Death Cure Release Dates: January 26th, 2018 (US); February 9th, 2018 (UK)…

The trailer for the latest Jonny Depp movie, Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Men Tell No Tales is here.

Teaser trailer

This  is a great teaser trailer because it’s the face of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow that fans can’t wait to see. Yet, he’s only on screen by name and illustration. Not to say that the reveal of Javier Bardem as Captain Salazer wasn’t also a visual delight.

Teaser trailer 2

Orlando Bloom, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario and Golshiftel Farahani also star. This should be fun.
