WHY HIM (2016): The Things I Liked…

Why Him (2016), Bryan Cranston, Megan Mullally, James Franco
Why Him (2016), Bryan Cranston, Megan Mullally, James Franco

I’ve always enjoyed James Franco in comedy roles, more so than I do his dramatic work. I loved the trailer for Why Him, which was well-paced and fun. It also contained a healthy handful of good jokes and expletives.

Fast forward to the movie, it could be argued that there’s an unnecessary level of curse words, though, thankfully, not too uncomfortably gratuitous. Some scenes were a tad awkward and could have moved along more quickly. Yet, overall, I had a good time.

The soundtrack, Franco’s billionaire filterless character’s charm, Keegan Michael-Key’s fun estate manager and peculiar ‘European’ accent are key highlights.

I also enjoyed the way Megan Mullally’s Barb responds to Franco’s Laird. My favourite of her lines is ‘Quite the outdoorsman.’ Watch it and see why that line is so perfect when it’s delivered – and for the rest of the good jokes. That’s assuming all those colourful expletives haven’t scared you off, of course.

STORKS (2016): Funny, Cute Adventure…

Storks (2016), Andy Samberg (Voice of Junior) Katie Crown (Voice of Tulip)
Storks (2016), Andy Samberg (Voice of Junior), Katie Crown (Voice of Tulip)

Storks is an action/adventure/comedy set in a time when storks deliver packages instead of babies; but then a brand new baby order appears and a stork must what? ‘Always deliver,’ of course.

Starring Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammer, Ty Burrell, Jennifer Aniston and Katie Crown, Storks is definitely fun and funny. Though it’s not my favourite of the animated films I’ve seen in 2016, I did enjoy the cuteness of all the babies, the nature of Hunter’s relationship with the little birds, the very unique skills of the wolf pack and the general adorableness of Nate Gardner.

There’s also that beautiful song at the end, ‘Fire and the Flood’ by Vance Joy; a singer who just happens to look like a smaller version of comedy actor, Josh Gad.

In case like me, you rather like the idea of storks delivering babies instead of the usual pain fest that’s actual labour, there’s a slight chance that you may find yourself feeling a little blue by the end of this movie, but luckily not for too long.

Watch Storks for all the good things mentioned above. Lastly, had it not been for the end credits, there’s no way I’d have guessed that Junior is voiced by Andy Samberg, such is his great vocal range.

THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE (2016): Fun, Funny, Cute…

The Angry Birds Movie (2016), Josh Gad (Chuck), Jason Sudeikis (Red)
The Angry Birds Movie (2016), Josh Gad (Chuck), Jason Sudeikis (Red)

Having only played the Rovio game on which The Angry Birds Movie is based a handful of times, I didn’t know why the birds are angry. The movie makes it quite clear that the green pigs have plenty to do with it. Though, I’m guessing that the whole thing of having wings but not being able to fly probably adds to the rage too, just a little.

I must admit that I enjoyed The Angry Birds Movie more than I expected. The cuteness of the birds, the comedy, the story and especially Chuck, the yellow bird voiced by Josh Gad. He stands out plenty, thanks to the funny dialogue, Gad’s comic timing and entertaining voice work.

During the movie, I definitely got the urge to download the game and play,  just so I could hurt those green piggies. Don’t be surprised if vengeance also enters your heart as you enjoy the movie.

Watch to see precisely why the piggies deserve to be punished. There’s also the cuteness, well-executed comic moments to enjoy and of course, that ending!

WHY HIM? (2016): New Trailer Starring James Franco, Bryan Cranston, Zoey Deutch…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Why Him? (2016).

Why Him? is the new ‘meet the parents’ comedy from James Franco, Bryan Cranston, Megan Mullally and Zoey Deutch.

This should be good because director/co-writer John Hamburg also wrote for the Paul Rudd and Jason Segel bromance classic,  I Love You, Man (2009). Plus, Ben Stiller’s Meet The Parents (2000).

James Franco in roles where he’s a little bit of an idiot, while also totally remaining lovable, are my favourites of his work. If you’ve seen and loved  Pineapple Express (2008) and  This Is The End (2013), then chances are you know exactly what I mean.

Why Him? Release Dates: December 25th, 2016 (US); January 6th, 2017 (UK); January 8th, 2017 (FR) January 12th, 2017 (GER)…

Keegan-Michael Key and Griffin Gluck also star.

DON’T THINK TWICE (2016): New Trailer From Mike Birbiglia, Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs…

Don't Think Twice (2016), Chris Gethard, Mike Birbiglia, Tami Sagher
Don’t Think Twice (2016), Chris Gethard, Mike Birbiglia, Tami Sagher

Written, directed by and starring Mike Birbiglia, today’s trailer is for Don’t Think Twice, a new comedy/drama about a New York City improv group and how they deal with the success of one of their members while the rest of them struggle.

I recall watching another Birbiglia-written movie a few years ago and loving it. It may have been Sleepwalk With Me (2012), though I can’t be sure. May the humour be as good and the drama as real as this trailer suggests.

Keegan Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci and Tami Sagher also star

Don’t Think Twice Release Dates: July 22nd, 2016 (US)…
