LOVE THE COOPERS (2015): The Things I Liked…

Christmas With The Coopers (2015), Olivia Wilde, Jake Lacy
Christmas With The Coopers (2015), Olivia Wilde, Jake Lacy

I would describe Love The Coopers as less like Elf (2003) and more like ABC TV series, Brothers & Sisters.

Directed by Jessie Nelson and starring John Goodman, Diane Keaton, Ed Helms, Olivia Wilde and Steve Martin,  Love the Coopers is one of those holiday films that reminds you that every family has unpleasant tensions and challenging relationships. Nevertheless, the good news is, in this film, the tense moments are wisely interspersed with humour and cheer.

The character Wilde plays is my favourite, partly because I find Wilde rather likeable in real life. Also, I relate most to aspects of her character, above all the others.

I wanted to watch something that didn’t demand too much from me, and that’s exactly what I got. Love the Coopers is unlikely to make my list of top 10 favourite Christmas movies, but it is easy, relaxing viewing with a side of romance – and surely, one can always make a little time for something like that.

Anthony Mackie, Jake Lacy, Amanda Seyfried and Marisa Tomei also star.

CAPTAIN AMERICA – CIVIL WAR (2016): New Trailer From Chris Evans & Scarlett Johansson

A second trailer from directing brothers Joe and Anthony Russo has landed for the 2016 instalment of Marvel’s Captain America.

Trailer 1

Trailer 2

I like the first trailer more than the second, thanks to the music and the circumstances of the the characters involved. I’ll watch Captain America Civil War for this reason, and for another chance to see Chris Evans’ portrayal of the rather admirable Steve Rogers.

This instalment of the franchise doesn’t seem to be about saving the world, but more about Captain America’s relationship with his childhood friend, Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, and how that effects others including Robert Downey Junior’s Iron Man.

Beyond the above, my personal level of excitement when it comes to superhero movies has definitely dwindled over time. That’s what happens in most instances when you’re fed the same kind of thing repeatedly and with minimal respite. At this time, I find myself actually looking forward to the time when this particular series of the Captain America Story is wrapped up. Still, that doesn’t mean I wont enjoy it if it’s good.

Release Date (s): April 29th, 2016 (UK), May 6th, 2016 (US)…

Set just before the most recent financial crisis, director Adam McKay’s latest film features some very reliable Hollywood leading actors.

The brilliant cast includes Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Marisa Tomei, Ryan Gosling, and Karen Gillan. Looks like a fun acting masterclass to me. Yes or yes?

The Big Short Release Dates: 2016, full dates to be confirmed.

CRAZY STUPID LOVE (2011): Steve Carell & Ryan Gosling comedy…

Crazy Stupid Love (2011), Steve Carell, Julianne Moore

Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Julianne Moore are the stars of drama/romance/comedy Crazy Stupid Love. A story about a man whose world is altered after what should have been a romantic dinner date with his wife becomes something else entirely.

Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, I tuned in because of Carell and Moore’s reputations; luckily, I found myself pleasantly surprised.

A big highlight for me is the scene with the valedictorian speech. That, and Gosling’s character, Jacob’s fashion sense.

I say watch Crazy Stupid Love for a reminder that humour is tragedy plus time. You’ll go through some emotions, but you will certainly laugh as well.

Along with The Notebook (2004), Crazy, Stupid, Love is without a doubt responsible for a good number of Ryan Gosling crushes.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Love the Coopers (2015).

Summer isn’t over yet but if you didn’t already know, it’s time for the Christmas movie trailer. And Love The Coopers is the first one I’ve seen for 2015.

Does it look refreshingly different? No, but it does look like this Jessie Nelson-directed seasonal film will provide precisely the mildly amusing, yet heartwarming entertainment one can enjoy after stuffing one’s face on the Lord’s special day.

The cast list includes familiar names like Olivia Wilde, Diane Keaton, John Goodman, Amanda Seyfried, Marisa Tomei and Anthony Mackie.

Out November 2015 (U.S.) and December 2015 (U.K.)
