THE DEPARTED (2006): The Things I Liked…

The Departed (2006), Leonardo DiCaprio, Warner Bros. Entertainment

I remember watching Martin Scorsese’s The Departed when it was released in 2006. A film I just had to see because of Scorsese, but also thanks to the triple A-list acting talents of Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon.

It’s been more than 10 years since then, and Scorsese’s highly rated crime/thriller about an undercover cop and a mole in the police service who are trying to identify each other, while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston remains a notable film.

As good as it is, I’m not sure if The Departed is the kind of movie that loses a portion of its shine over time. Or, could it be that my being caught up in ‘Leo Mania‘ in 2006 made me rate it a little more highly than it may have deserved, because I did rate it VERY highly indeed? It could also just be that this isn’t the first time I’ve seen the film; therefore, chances are, I won’t feel it’s as great as it was at first viewing. Either way, today I’d say that the first half of the movie is good, but it’s really in the second act that things get most thrilling.

Can I continue to call The Departed my favourite Scorsese movie? Perhaps not. Even though I still think it’s one of his best. And besides the example of what a good crime/thriller can look like, I’ll also remember The Departed for being the first time I heard a croissant referred to as ‘a French doughnut.’

For anyone who’s never watched The Departed, part of what makes the movie notable, besides the great story and cast is it doesn’t end the way you expect. Thank goodness that ten-plus years was enough for me to forget the ending, almost entirely. I mean, I did remember the rat on the window sill, but that’s it.

Watch it because it’s good and it is definitely a classic after all.

JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT (2019): New Trailer From Kevin Smith, Chris Hemsworth, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck…

Jay & Silent Bob Reboot (2019), Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes

2001’s cult classic Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back has a sequel coming. This time the two friends Jay and Silent Bob are returning to Hollywood to stop a reboot of ‘Bluntman and Chronic,’ a movie about their alter egos.

Written/directed by Kevin Smith, this movie, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, stars much of the original cast, including Smith himself, Jason Mewes, Ben Affleck, and new faces such as Chris Hemsworth, plus Matt Damon.

I don’t believe I’ve watched the original movie, but I am curious. I’m also always intrigued by films with a star-filled cast list.

Melissa Benoist, Joe Manganiello, Val Kilmer, Rosario Dawson, Grant Gustin, Justin Long, Jason Biggs, Kate Micucci and Jason Lee also star.

Jay & Silent Bob Release Dates: October 15th, 2019 (US)…

FORD v FERRARI (2019): New Trailer From Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Jon Bernthal, Caitriona Balfe…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of  Ford v Ferrari (2019).

Starring Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Jon Bernthal, and Caitriona Balfe, Ford v Ferrari is a new action/drama from Logan (2017) director James Mangold.

It’s the true story of the battle between car manufacturers Ford and Ferrari to win Le Mans in 1966.

I like the pairing of Bale and Damon, and since this is an American movie, I guess we likely already know who ‘wins.’

I’m ready for the dialogue and humour. I also can’t help but wonder how differently the Italians might tell this story.

Ray McKinnon, Josh Lucas, JJ Feild, Noah Jupe, Stefania Spampinato, Tracy Letts, Wyatt Nash and Hélène Cardona also star.

Ford v Ferrari Release Dates: November 15th, 2019 (US &UK)…

DOWNSIZING (2017): The Things I Liked…

Downsizing (2017), Matt Damon
Downsizing (2017), Matt Damon

Within a few minutes of starting to watch director/co-writer Alexander Payne’s comedy/drama, Downsizing, the thought ‘Oh, no… this  isn’t going to be ridiculous, is it?’ crossed my mind.

Starring Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau and Jason Sudeikis, Downsizing is a social satire about a man who decides he’d have a much better life if he were to shrink himself.

I’m happy to say that I had fun watching Downsizing, even though the film didn’t really get properly exciting for me until it began to deliver on its ‘part-comedy’ categorisation, something that finally happens approximately thirty-nine minutes in. Everything before that point is ‘kind of engaging,’ but too slow for my tastes.

I laughed a pleasing amount in the film and many of the wonderfully funny scenes featured Damon’s clueless Paul Safranek character. I found Paul particularly amusing because he seems to suffer from a kind of ‘blindness’ that I haven’t seen played/written quite as well as it is in this movie for a while. I laughed mostly at him and his apparent cluelessness in several situations.

Besides the memorable comedy performances, I enjoyed the sci-fi aspect of the story and how, knowing the challenges of modern life as well as I think I do, I can accept that a person might actually decide that shrinkage was a good idea.

As a non-action movie, I admit that there were moments nearer the beginning where I couldn’t help but half expect Damon’s character to suddenly burst into action-movie-star mode and start running and punching. That didn’t happen, of course, but I’m certainly not disappointed either. especially as Waltz and Chau were also responsible for some of the funny moments.

I say, give Downsizing a chance. You may find it as laughter-inducing (in parts) as I did.

Directed and co-written by Alexander Payne, Downsizing is a movie/social satire about a man who realises that he’d have a better life if he were to shrink himself.

Kristen Wiig, Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz and Brigette Lundy-Paine star.

The cast is great, and the above synopsis seems perfectly ridiculous, and a great predicament for potential humour.

Niecy Nash, Jason Sudeikis, Laura Dern, Neil Patrick Harris and  James Van Der Beek also star.
