Directed by James Hawes, The Amateur is a new action/thriller starring Rami Malek, Holt McCallany, Rachel Brosnahan and Caitríona Balfe.

Malek plays a CIA Cryptographer on a mission to find the terrorists who murdered his wife.

This feels like a story for all the underestimated, the misunderstood, the misclassified, the incorrectly categorised, the misjudged and the unseen. You know, like that student whose skills can’t come to light in a ‘one size fits all standardised test.

This absolutely speaks to my vengeance story-loving heart. Dare I say, it’s kind of like John Wick but for the computer smart. Am I right or am I right?

Lastly and randomly, I think ‘Cryptographer’ and one of my favourite movies, The Imitation Game (2014), comes to mind because Turing was a Cryptanalyst.

Papillon is a remake of a 1973 movie about a man who’s framed for murder and condemned to life in the notorious penal colony on Devil’s Island.

Determined to regain his freedom, he teams up with a fellow inmate to plan his escape.

Directed by Michael Noer; Charlie Hannum, Rami Malek, Eve Hewson and Tommy Flanagan star.

I don’t know how good this is going to be, but seeing this trailer reminded me of being at university and asking a friend about the name of his favourite book. Reason being, at the time, I was in the midst of a long reading rut. A rut that thankfully came to an end after said friend uttered the words ‘Papillon by Henri Charière’, the very book and true story on which this movie is based, and a book that is now one of my most highly recommended.

I’m quite sure that I’ll watch the original movie (starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman) about Charière’s story before I see this one. Nevertheless, I just had to check out this trailer for old times sake, and to see how much I remembered.

In Buster’s Mal Heart, the Sarah Adina Smith-written/directed movie starring Rami Malek, Malek plays a family man whose chance encounter with a conspiracy-obsessed drifter leads to him being on the run from the police and something called The Inversion.

I’ve never watched Mr Robot, the hit series that Malek is best known for, but my goodness, Malek’s face is arresting, right? Or is the word intense? I’ll watch this movie because of the hints of dark humour and the seemingly very peculiar story.
