How To Talk to Girls At Parties (2017), Elle Fanning, Alex Sharp

Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Ruth Wilson and Alex Sharp are the stars of How to Talk to Girls at Parties, a John Cameron Mitchell-directed comedy/romance about an alien. One that’s touring the galaxy but breaks away from her group and meets two young inhabitants of the most dangerous place in the universe – the London suburb of Croydon.

I’m in for the alien activity and the costumes. I also can’t say that I didn’t find the line in the official synopsis about Croydon amusing. Especially since I’m not from there, but I know of its reputation.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), Colin Farrell

Co-written and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, The Killing of a Sacred Deer stars Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Alicia Silverstone and Barry Keoghan.

At the heart of the story is a charismatic surgeon who’s forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart, and the behaviour of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing turns sinister.

I remember at least partly enjoying The Lobster (2015), the last Yorgos Lanthimos movie I watched. Therefore, I’m thinking and hoping that this will not disappoint.

There’s also the wonderfully full beard that Colin Farrell is sporting. I at least need to look at that a little more.

In The Beguiled, Colin Farrell plays a wounded Union soldier who cons his way into the hearts of the women in a Confederate girls’ boarding school.

Soon enough, the women turn against each other, just before they get smart and turn on him. Directed by Sofia Coppola; other acting talent includes Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning and Angourie Rice.

I find this trailer promising, especially because of the cast. I want to be even more excited but after The Bling Ring (2013) – the last Sofia Coppola directed movie I saw which I did not enjoy as much as expected,  I’ll wait and see;  in a very calm and perfectly balanced manner. Also this is a remake of the 1971 movie of the same name starring Clint Eastwood.

Lion, directed by Garth Davis and starring Dev Patel,  Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara tells the true story of Saroo Brierley, a young boy separated from his family in Calcutta at age five, and his journey to find them 25 years later.

Slumdog Millionnaire (2008) is the last great Dev Patel movie I saw. I’m sure there’s a handful I’ll get to soon, but I’d really like to start with Lion. Bring on the  happy ending, I say.  If only  for all the other times when the real life endings are far from happy.

David Wenham, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Benjamin Rigby also star.

In Genius, the new movie directed by Michael Grandage, Colin Firth is Max Perkins, the book Editor who oversaw the work of some of America’s best-known writers. Namely, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe and Ernest Hemingway.

Genius looks like the kind of movie that’ll be most interesting to writers and fans of the key actors involved. I’m just not sure that this particular cut of the trailer has me that eager to see the film. Perhaps, if the inauthenticity of Jude Law’s accent wasn’t so obvious, maybe I’d be more excited.
