POINT BREAK (1991): The Things I Liked…

My Keanu Reeves appreciation period continues with director Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break, a good action/adventure/thriller about a Rookie F.B.I. agent who goes undercover to catch suspected bank-robbing surfers.

As a fan of both Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, their dynamic in this movie, coupled with all the ways the story is engaging and good in surprising ways, add up to why Bigelow’s film is memorable.

I suspect that even now – thirty-four years since it was released, Point Break still has one of the most memorable endings of any movie. How very wise of me to have watched this version instead of the unfortunate 2015 remake

If you’ve never seen Point Break and you’re curious, enjoy this early and notable Bigelow film, long before she delighted movie fans with The Hurt Locker (2008) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012).

ROAD HOUSE (1989): The Things I Liked…

There are two reasons why I watched director Rowdy Herrington’s Road House (1989). Patrick Swayze’s undeniable magic is one reason – the camera seems to just fully love him, right? The other is I’ve heard several men rate the film quite highly. Add to that the recently released remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, (which I’m yet to see), and I had to satisfy my curiosity.

As predicted, Swayze is his usual magnetic self as Dalton, a smaller-than-expected bouncer, hired to clean up the roughest bar in a Missouri town, thanks in part to his black belt in karate.

Well-paced with a good amount of suspense built-in’ is one way to describe Road House. I believed Dalton to be as capable as his Karate background would suggest. There are certainly some fun and impressive fight sequences. Nevertheless, my favourite scene has more to do with dialogue than fighting. It’s the one when Dalton introduces himself to his new team and lays down the law.

There came a point in Road House when I was exhausted by all the fighting and wanted the conflicts resolved. No surprises there, I guess, since the movie is made predominantly for a male audience. I’ll probably still watch the Jake Gyllenhaal remake. After all, he too is talented and magnetic. I will, however, need the music to be different because the rock music in Herrington’s film isn’t my favourite.

If you’re curious enough, give Road House a chance. Especially if you’re into fighting/fight choreography. Lastly, the story is quite romantic – though, mostly not in the lovey-dovey sense.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of I Am Patrick Swayze (2019)

Witten/directed by Adrian Buitenhuis, I Am Patrick Swayze is a new documentary about the life and career of Patrick Swayze, the celebrated pop culture icon.

Offering a loving tribute that features untold stories, exclusive interviews, heartfelt home movies and family photos, I Am Patrick Swayze brings together many of those who knew Swayze best. Including friends, family and colleagues, such as Demi Moore, Sam Elliott, Jennifer Grey and Rob Lowe.

As the clip with the top image appeared and Demi Moore was speaking, for a moment I thought she was going to say ‘Patrick had something about him that was very… SEXY!‘ But no. Instead she said rugged, beautiful, gentle, sensuous… all of which I’m sure are also true, of course.

I’m intrigued by this one even though I never really had a Swayze Crush. I mean, I may have a tiny crush right now… I digress. I’m mostly just curious about the man/artist who starred in Ghost (1990), one of my earlier movie memories.

Lori Petty, Kelly Lynch,  C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Lisa Niemi, Don Swayze and Marshall R. Teague also make an appearance.

I Am Patrick Swayze Release Dates: August 18th, 2019 (US)…
