PROJECT POWER (2020): The Things I Liked…

Project Power (2020), Jamie Foxx, Netflix

I had fun watching the down-to-earth take on the human-with-superpowers story that is Project Power. Particular highlights being the fun special effects and good performances, especially by Jamie Foxx and Dominique Fishback.

Centred around a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes, the first thirty or so minutes of Project Power. is watchable. But it’s once Foxx and Fishback’s characters meet that I sat up and started to pay attention. From that point on the fun continued until the not entirely expected nature of the conclusion.

As someone who has long tired of the traditional superhero movie stories, I welcomed the difference this one offered. So much so that the use of some familiar tropes barely bothered me. I was too busy having fun watching this particular story unfold.

Watch Project Power for a different take on the humans with superpowers story. I’m convinced that there are elements that will likely surprise you, in a good way.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Project Power (2020).

Starring Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rodrigo Santoro; Project Power is a new sci-fi/action movie focused around taking down the creators of a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes.

Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman; additional key cast includes Dominique Fishback, Machine Gun Kelly, Amy Landecker, Courtney B. Vance…

I can’t quite tell which way it’s going to go with this one. I certainly want it to be great. My fingers are therefore crossed for what’s hopefully a very pleasant surprise indeed.

Tait Fletcher, Yoshi Sudarso, Allen Maldonado, Dominique Fishback, and Casey Neistat also star.

Project Power Release Dates: August 14th, 2020 (US)

WESTWORLD (2016): New Trailer For HBO Series Starring Anthony Hopkins, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris…

Westworld (2016), Evan Rachel Wood
Westworld (2016), Evan Rachel Wood

Set at a futuristic theme park populated by artificial beings, HBO’s new sci-fi series, Westworld is inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1973 movie of the same name.

I’m not exactly the biggest  sci-fi fan but I’ve identified a number of reasons to get excited about Westworld. One of them is a cast list that includes well respected names like Anthony Hopkins, Jeffrey Wright, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris and Evan Rachel Wood. Another big reason is the writers who are husband and wife team Lisa Joy Nolan and Jonathan Nolan. That’s  Jonathan Nolan, brother to Christopher Nolan and co-screenwriter of some of the best action / sci-fi  movies of recent years; – The Dark Knight (2008)Inception (2010) and Interstellar (2014),  to name just three…

I’m already in love with  Westworld  because of the reasons above – including the trailer. Needless to say I’ll be tuning in.

I’m just hoping that when the time comes, the show will end in a reasonably timely manner. You know,  before it becomes annoyingly tedious and not very good… for example, as much as I don’t completely dislike Game Of Thrones, I feel as though it needs to be wrapped up already.

Westworld starts in October 2016 on HBO.

PELÉ (2016): New Trailer For The Story Of The Brazilian Football Legend…

Pelé (2016), Kevin de Paula
Pelé (2016), Kevin de Paula

A movie about the life story of one of the world’s greatest football players has been made.

Written / directed by Jeff and Michael Zimbalist, Vincent D’Onofrio, Diego Boneta, Rodrigo Santoro and  Leonardo Lima Carvalho (10 year old Pelé) and  Kevin de Paula (15 year old Pelé) are the stars.

I’m looking forward to this one because greatness always commands attention. I have exactly zero aspirations to become a footballer but I know I’ll learn something…

Just think how skilled at football the actors in this movie had to be in order to be cast. Perhaps there are even some Pelé stunt performers involved.

Pelé Release Dates: May 6th, 2016 (US)…

BEN HUR (2016): New Trailer Starring Jack Huston & Morgan Freeman

Ben Hur (2016), Jack Huston
Ben Hur (2016), Jack Huston

Today’s trailer is an interesting one. It’s the remake of a classic film of the same name and one that is loved by many. The movie is Ben Hur and Jack Huston is the actor in the title role that was first made famous back in 1959 by Charlton Heston…

I don’t know about this trailer. What I do know for sure at this point is that I have to watch Charlton Heston’s much celebrated version before and if I watch this one. This edit just doesn’t have that potentially ‘epic movie look and feel’ I was hoping for.

Morgan Freeman, Nazanin Boniadi, Rodrigo Santoro and Haluk Bilgner are some of the supporting cast in this Timur Bekmambetov directed ‘brother against brother’ tale of vengeance.

Ben Hur Release Dates: August 12th, 2016 (US); August 26th, 2016 (UK)…

Rio, I Love You (2014), John Turturro, Vanessa Paradis

For those in love with love, I think today’s trailer might be for you. Rio, I Love You is a series of short films set in the sunny Brazilian city and brought to us by numerous talented directors including Paolo Sorrentino, John Turturro and Guillermo Arriaga…

You don’t have to be completely in love with love, or even in love with Rio, for Rio, I love You to intrigue you. You just have to want to know more about the characters presented in the this rather energising trailer. I for one, find myself very curious indeed. Thanks to the editing, music and snippets of the stories in love’s various stages and forms.

Rodrigo Santoro, Emily Mortimer, Vincent Cassel, Ryan Kwanten and John Turturro are some of the key cast.

THE 33 (2015): For The Story Of Survival & James Horner’s Musical Score

The 33 (2015), Lou Diamond Phillips, Antonio Banderas
The 33 (2015), Lou Diamond Phillips, Antonio Banderas

Around the time the Chilean mining accident took place in 2010, I learned only the basics of what happened; namely the number of men trapped and the fact that fortunately, against the odds, they all made it out alive.

Starring Antonio Banderas, Juliette Binoche, Mario Casas, Gabriel Byrne and Rodrigo Santoro, The 33 is the story of the 33 men, those who helped get them out and their experience of the day of the accident through to the rescue.

Directed by Patricia Riggen, The 33 had me thinking about how much people really need each other to make it through. The survival of all the 33 took a lot of different decisions and actions both big and small, by the men trapped deep underground and people outside.

The movie is just over two hours and it did feel a little long at one point but that was likely more about myself along with probably a lot of the audience wanting and willing the suffering of the men to end already. We all knew that all would be well in the end, of course, whereas the 33 men had no idea.

Would I have watched this movie if the ending wasn’t as happy? Probably not because that would likely make it a horror movie and I’m not really partial to those. The story I did watch is well told and it’s about what it can take to survive when the odds are against you.

One thing you’ll certainly notice as you watch this movie is how good the music is. The man responsible is the unfortunately late, great James Horner, the composer better known for his work on James Cameron’s Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009). May he rest in Peace.

Watch The 33 because it’s good.

JANE GOT A GUN (2016): New Trailer Starring Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton & Ewan McGregor

Jane Got A Gun (2015), Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton

Directed by Gavin O’Connor, Natalie Portman’s latest, Jane Got A Gun is a western. Something you may have guessed from the title…

It looks like the movie will be good especially with a promising cast that also includes Joel Egerton, Rodrigo Santoro and Noah Emmerich.

May it be as impressive as True Grit (2010) because that movie is fantastic!
