THE KILLER’S GAME (2024): New Trailer From Sofia Boutella, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scott Adkins, Ben Kingsley…

Dave Bautista is Joe Flood, a veteran assassin in new action/comedy/thriller, The Killer’s Game.

Directed by J.J. Perry; also starring Sofia Boutella, Pom Klementieff, Scott Adkins and Ben Kingsley; Flood is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and authorises a kill on himself…

I last saw the ‘brain scan switch‘ plot device in The Last Holiday (2006), a rather cheerful Christmas movie starring Queen Latifah and LL Cool J.

The real reason I’m drawn to this movie is the motorbike kick at 1:52 seconds into the trailer. Now I have to see what else is on offer fun action-wise. Also, knowing Boutella’s physical capabilities, I’m guessing she’s not just there to play the clueless girlfriend.

This one’s clearly ‘John Wick-flavoured,’ which I’m sure, is a good thing for many of us.

Terry Crews, Daniel Bernhardt, Antonia Desplat, Marko Zaror, Drew McIntyre, Lucy Cork, George Somner, Raffaello Degruttola, Scott Alexander Young and József Kovalik Jr. also star.

The Killer’s Game Release Dates: September 13th, 2024 (US)…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Argylle (2024).

Matthew Vaughn’s latest film is another fun-looking spy adventure. One that stars Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill, Sofia Boutella, Samuel L. Jackson, Dua Lipa, Bryce Dallas Howard and many more.

I’m ready for all the fun things I’ve come to expect from a good Vaughn film (The Kingsman (2014), including inspiring fight choreography, music and fun dialogue.

Also, Jackson and Boutella together again in a Vaughn movie, plus Rockwell in a fun action film role are two things to get very excited about.

Lastly, it’s been a while since we had a cat as a key character in a movie. Perhaps this one will help save the day. I admit that for a second, I thought the cat was the real agent Argylle. Anyone else?

Rob Delaney, Jing Lusi, Ariana DeBose, Jason Fuchs, Bobby Holland Hanton, Stanley Morgan, Fiona Marr and Mark Bernard also star.

Argylle Release Dates: February 2nd, 2024 (US & UK)…

ATOMIC BLONDE (2017) : The ThingS I Liked…

Atomic Blonde (2017), Charlize Theron
Atomic Blonde (2017), Charlize Theron

Atomic Blonde, an action/thriller about an undercover MI6 agent on a mission to investigate the murder of a fellow agent, and recover a missing list of double agents is arguably an adequately thrilling experience.

Starring Charlize Theron and James McAvoy, what stood out most for me about director David Leitch’s film is the style – and by ‘style’ I mean the general look and feel, the colours, clothing, the exciting fight sequences, the way specific moments are shot at a particular angle, making for a more satisfying visual experience. One such example would be the way Leitch captures the scene near the start when McAvoy’s character walks up to the car that just crashed with his colleague (Theron) inside.

Watching a very capable, well-dressed female character in charge of herself and her surroundings was fun. It was an inspiring vision that quickly brought to mind another fictional character with impressive abilities and great style. Namely Sylvia Hoeks’s highly memorable work as Luv in Blade Runner 2049 (2017).

Atomic Blonde is a movie you watch for the thrilling action and mystery. It likely won’t have you with a megaphone in hand, post-viewing and trying to gather everyone to watch it immediately. Nevertheless, by the end, you may, like me, find yourself thinking, ‘yeah, that wasn’t terrible. Nor was it exceptionally memorable either, yet I have no regrets.’

Lastly, when it comes to the question of Theron’s British accent, I don’t think that she did terribly. However, my ‘expert ear’ did notice a few inconsistencies. Nothing too laughable, mind you. Thank goodness.

Watch it for the colours, fights and style. It’s even possibly, more than a little fun.

FAHRENHEIT 451 (2018): New Trailer From Michael B. Jordan, Michael Shannon, Sofia Boutella…

Fahrenheit 451 (2018), Michael B. Jordan
Fahrenheit 451 (2018), Michael B. Jordan

Starring Michael B. Jordan, Sofia Boutella and Michael Shannon, Fahrenheit 451 is set in a future where all books must be destroyed.

Jordan plays Guy Montag, a fireman whose job it is to eradicate all books. Unbeknownst to his superiors, Montag begins to question his actions after meeting a little girl.

A world where books are no longer a thing? How can one not be intrigued? It seems near-enough ridiculous that such a predicament should truly come to pass. Personally, I have no issues with such a reality, well, as long as it remains purely fiction, of course.

Directed by Ramin Bahrani; Keir Dullea, Martin Donovan, Lilly Singh, Grace Lynn Kung and Sean Jones also star.

Fahrenheit 451 Release Dates: May 19th, 2018 (US)…

THE MUMMY (2017): The Things I Liked…

The Mummy (2017), Sofia Boutella
The Mummy (2017), Sofia Boutella

Starring Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Russell Crowe and Annabelle Wallis; there are parts of director Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy, a story about an ancient Egyptian princess, one awakened from her crypt and determined to wreak havoc, that I enjoyed. An example would be Russell Crowe’s ‘second character’ who proved a lot of fun to watch even though he appears but very briefly.

Another highlight is courtesy of Sofia Boutella, an actress who was introduced to many audiences as Gazelle in Matthew Vaughn’s rather good Kingsman – The Secret Service (2014). I adored Gazelle even though she was a ‘baddie.’ And because of that experience, I was sure that Boutella would bring something special, particularly physicality-wise to the character of The Mummy (Princess Ahmanet).

Princess Ahmanet stood out so much for me that all other performances and characters mostly paled in comparison. Perhaps her character was just the most interesting overall. What I know for sure is that I found myself genuinely scared of the idea that I might personally encounter the princess as I went about my day-to-day. Something to do with the costume design and special effects, I’m sure. That and Boutella’s performance, of course. There’s also the fact that a lot of the film is set in London, England, my beloved city.

I admit that there are points during The Mummy when I thought, ‘This is interesting. Now, I’m excited about the other movies coming from Universal’s ‘Dark Universe. It’s just unfortunate that by the end of the film, I was singing an entirely different tune altogether.  The story, writing and execution turned out to feel too basic for me, especially for a Tom Cruise movie.

On a more positive note, I’m now even more curious about Egypt’s real history and I may just delve into that as a result. I may even…

Who am I kidding? I’m busy, and far too into film to make time for more history books.

Give The Mummy a chance if you’re curious.
