DIRTY GRANDPA (2016): The Things I Liked…

Dirty Grandpa is a comedy about a lecherous grandfather and his uptight grandson who go on a road trip that one of them really wishes wasn’t happening.

Starring Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Aubrey Plaza and directed by Dan Mazer, this is one of those movies that has a good number of funny moments. The only thing is, those great moments are unfortunately followed by a few ill-advised scenes with dialogue and story development that needed more work/editing.

I enjoyed watching De Niro as an outrageous and expletive-filled senior citizen, the opposite of what he did most recently in The Intern (2015). I just wish the script had been better.

As for the other characters, ‘Caricaturish’ is sadly the word that comes to mind for Julianne Hough’s role as Meredith. I don’t know if my objection is to the type of person she portrays, the way she played her, or both. Lenore, (Plaza) is probably the only one that didn’t make me cringe in parts. I’m not quite sure what some might think that suggests about me. Hopefully, it says that I enjoy language and love to see it used creatively.

Dirty Grandpa, for me, is a story of bonding between a grandson and grandfather. I thought there was no need for the clichéd young romance. But then again, I’m not a teenager, or a Zac Efron fangirl.

It’s probably fair to say that the actors did the best they could with the material at hand. I certainly wouldn’t tell someone looking for a really great comedy to make time for Dirty Grandpa. But, if you’re a big fan of at least one of the actors, even I know I can’t stop you.

NEIGHBORS 2 (2016): Fun Trailer Starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne…

Neighbors 2 (2016) Ike Barinholtz, Zac Efron, Seth Rogen

Neighbors 2 is the sequel to Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron’s Neighbors (2014). The latter being a movie about new parents who are forced to live next door to a loud, partying-at-all-hours type of fraternity.

In the second instalment, again, directed by Nicholas Stoller, the young couple’s new problem is the Sorority next door.

I must admit that the first film isn’t one of my favourites of Rogen’s comedies, even though his character’s reaction to the baby/condom scene is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in a film/trailer. It’s up there, not too far from the pooping in street scene in Bridesmaids (2011).

I’ve decided that, like a young so and so who must not let their past failed relationships stop them from getting involved in something that could be amazing, I’m going to dive into Neighbours 2Sorority Rising (2016) with reasonably more than average expectations. Call me foolish.

May I please, not be filled with regret post viewing.

Neighbors 2 Release Dates: May 20th, 2016 (US); June 16th, 2016 (IT); July 6th, 2016 (FR)…

MIKE & DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES (2016): New Trailer Starring Zac Efron & Adam DeVine

Today’s trailer looks fun and has arrived just in time to get us all in the mood for summer 2016.

Directed by Jake Szymanski, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates stars Zac Efron, Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick and Adam DeVine.

I’m ready for this non-serious summer viewing experience. Especially since I know I’ll be in the mood for it in July and August.

Of course, Efron is fun, but it’s really Anna Kendrick playing an outrageous character that has me most intrigued by Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. For some reason, I still think of her as the prim and proper young professional, Natalie Keener, a.k.a George Clooney’s side-kick in Up In The Air (2009).

Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates Release Date(s): July 8th, 2016 (US); August 12th, 2016 (UK)…

WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS (2015): The Thing I liked…

We Are Your Friends (2015), Zac Efron, Wes Bentley
We Are Your Friends (2015), Zac Efron, Wes Bentley

Directed by Max Joseph; We Are Your Friends (WAYF) is a film you might watch for one of  the following reasons:

1. You’re curious about making it as a DJ in electronic music and welcome the idea of a movie that shows what the journey might be like. Especially if you come from ‘the wrong side of the tracks‘ – in the case of Zac Efron’s character, the wrong side of the Hollywood sign.

2. You really, REALLY ‘like’ Efron

3. You more than like Emily Ratajkowski

I watched WAYF because firstly, I don’t mind Zac Efron, second, I’ll always kind of like Wes Bentley – thanks to American Beauty (1999), and finally, I haven’t really seen Ratajkowski in much, so I was curious.

Overall, I’d say that WAYF is not the absolute worst. However, it did feel like a certain je ne sais quoi was missing.

Unfortunately, at no point while the film played did I get close to the ‘this is a good movie. Wow!’ feeling. Especially regarding the story, structure, rhythm, etc. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the theme of chasing your dreams, visualising your future – what you want it to be like and moving in that direction while blocking out the doubters.

There’s also a rather good ‘This is exactly my dream and it’s about to happen‘ moment in the film. That’s my favourite part because I really felt it, thanks to some movie making magic/music, camerawork, atmosphere, etc.

Give WAYF a chance, if you’re curious enough.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Dirty Grandpa (2016).

Directed by Dan Mazer, Dirty Grandpa looks unapologetically outrageous, which is a plus.

I’m one of those people who really enjoys Robert De Niro in comedy roles. So bring on 2016!
