CATFIGHT (2016): The Thing I Liked…

Catfight (2016), Alicia Silverstone, Anne Heche
Catfight (2016), Alicia Silverstone, Anne Heche

Anne Heche’s performance as a bitter, struggling artist and Amy Hill’s turn as ‘crazy aunt Charlie’ are the two main highlights of Catfight.

Starring Sandra Oh, Anne Heche, Alicia Silverstone and Amy Hill, Catfight is a dark drama/comedy about the long-standing rivalry between two former college friends. A rivalry that turns into brutal, life-altering fights.

The source of the humour in Catfight is mostly tragedy. This is probably part of the reason why I didn’t laugh a lot. In some ways I found the main characters to be too ridiculously ‘unthinking’ in some of their key choices.

With Catfight, you’re essentially watching grown-ups behaving badly towards one another in ways that don’t necessarily feel completely justified. The characters are, in the most part, not likeable – even some, the ones I found myself feeling sorry for.

The general idea of this movie is a good one, but the execution could have been less awkward in parts. How far could this story have gone with Quentin Tarantino’s writing brain and his budget behind it? I also wonder whether the edit may have helped to kill this film. Right now, there’s a chance that I may enjoy Catfight more after a second viewing. I’ll certainly update this post should I go down that seemingly crazy route.

Lastly, and randomly, for anyone who’s ever wondered what the voice of a six-year-old girl sounds like on a grown adult woman, Catfight absolutely has the answer.

THE LITTLE MERMAID (2017): New Trailer For Live-Action Movie Starring Shirley MacLaine, William Moseley, Gina Gershon, Poppy Drayton…

The Little Mermaid (2017), Poppy Drayton
The Little Mermaid (2017), Poppy Drayton

Before you get too excited, this new trailer for The Little Mermaid is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and not the better-known Disney film of the same name.

Starring Shirley MacLaine, William Moseley, Gina Gershon, Poppy Drayton, and directed by Chris Bouchard and Blake Harris, this story centres around a little girl and her young uncle’s discovery of an enchanting creature they believe to be a real mermaid.

I’m a fan of the Disney film, and my reason for watching this version would be that I’m curious about the original Hans Christian Andersen story.

Call it a hunch, but the look and feel of this trailer tells me I may end up missing the ‘glossy finish’ afforded by a Disney budget. How nice it would be for me to be proved so very, very wrong.

Will you be watching The Little Mermaid? If not, you may already know that a live-action version of the Disney film is coming. There’s just no release date yet since they’re still in pre-production. Though I’m quite sure that it definitely won’t be here in 2017.

The Little Mermaid Release Dates: August 17th, 2018 (US)…

ROUGH NIGHT (2017): New Trailer From Scarlett Johansson, Zoë Kravitz, Kate McKinnon…

Rough Night (2017), Kate McKinnon, Ilana Glazer, Zoë Kravitz, Scarlett Johansson, Jillian Bell
Rough Night (2017), Kate McKinnon, Ilana Glazer, Zoë Kravitz, Scarlett Johansson, Jillian Bell

Scarlett Johansson, Zoë Kravitz and Kate McKinnon have a new Lucia Aniello-directed comedy.

The story centres around what happens at a bachelorette weekend getaway, after one of the attendees ends up dead.

I think it’s going to take something pretty special to experience a bachelor/bachelorette getaway movie that’s good enough to come close to the likes of The Hangover (2009) and Bridesmaids (2011).

I’m happy to entertain those who try, though. As long as the trailers don’t look absolutely terrible. So far, for 2017, we have  Girls Trip and now, Rough Night. I’m not particularly over-excited about either option, but I am willing to be pleasantly surprised.

Rough Night Release Dates: June 16th, 2017 (US & UK)…

NAKED (2017): New Trailer From Marlon Wayans, Regina Hall, Dennis Haysbert…

Naked (2017), Marlon Wayans
Naked (2017), Marlon Wayans

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Naked (2017).

Starring Marlon Wayans, Regina Hall and Dennis Haysbert , Naked is all about a soon-to-be groom who is nervous about his big day and is forced to relive the same nerve-wracking hours over and over again until he gets things right on his wedding day.

Directed by  Michael Tiddes, I want to see this one because I have fond memories of Wayans after watching Senseless (1998) in my early youth.

I also actually like this trailer. It seems to get more and more amusing with each viewing. It appears that the magic is in the way he gives up.

Loretta Devine, Cory Hardrict and Dave Sheridan also star.

Naked Release Dates: August 11th, 2017 (US)…

PASSENGERS (2016): The Thing I Liked…

Passengers (2016), Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt
Passengers (2016), Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt

My favourite thing about Passengers is what it has to say (however little) about our need for human connection. Besides this and the beautiful images of space towards the very end, the experience of Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt’s latest film can be described as ‘a not very good in-space romantic comedy’ with moments of bad dialogue and arguably questionable chemistry.

Passengers isn’t bad because the actors, Lawrence, Pratt, Michael Sheen and Laurence Fishburne did a particularly substandard job. It’s disappointing because there’s a certain hollow/under-developed feel about the story.

The fact that you can more or less count the number of characters on one hand has very little, if anything, to do with it. Even with the movie’s most loved star, Lawrence, and Morten Tyldum, director of one of 2014’s best films – The Imitation Game (2014), Passengers could not be saved from its built-in emptiness, nor could it be saved from the thoughts that came to my mind as I watched:

‘Oh dear

This is actually not very good

My, that was a bad line

Watch Passengers if nothing will stop you. Chances are, you will likely be longing for all that seems to be missing.
