BIRDMAN 2014): Dark And Different

My favourite thing about Birdman is the pleasant surprise of Zach Galifianakis in a serious dramatic role. Though not a particularly sizeable one, he does a brilliant job.

Directed by the apparently unpronounceably named Alejandro González Iñárritu, the acting, dialogue and distinct style of shooting are impressive.

It’s clear why critics love Birdman and equally so, why some of the general film watching public don’t. Something to do with the film not being quite ‘traditional.’

Regret about familial relationships and difficulty adapting to the changing environment are two of the key themes Iñárritu’s Oscar winning film explores.

The film is dark, both thematically and aesthetically. As such, ‘cheered up’ is unlikely to be how you feel as you watch. That said, however, you’ll be entertained because all the actors deliver very noteworthy performances that result in Oscar nominations for Michael Keaton, Emma Stone and Edward Norton.

Audiences will get insight into what it can be like behind the scenes of a highly anticipated theatre production. Especially how peculiar things can become when said production is the responsibility of a formerly successful actor who also happens to be extremely desperate for a comeback.

I particularly love the Time Square scene. Not because of its comedic value, but as commentary on how even when things still continue to go wrong after a long obstacle-filled struggle, you can find a way for the show to go on.

TOP FIVE (2014): Chris Rock. Funny, Current And Real, Like Always

The Chris Rock written and directed comedy/romance Top Five is  a film for all who had been missing the comic’s famous humour, and all fans of funny.

Though not a stand up comedy set, the story does keep getting more and more interesting as it unfolds.

There’s also a handful of very welcome cameos to make the experience even more fun. I’ll say no more about that, so you can be pleasantly surprised.

Rosario Dawson, Dawson, Gabrielle Union, J.B. Smoove and Tracy Morgan also star.

THE INTOUCHABLES (2011): A Beautiful Friendship & Laughter, Naturally

Screen Shot 2015-02-21 at 03.20.40

I’ll start by saying I’m glad this is the first movie I’ve seen starring Omar Sy. A truly brilliant introduction and first impression. If you didn’t already know of him or his equally talented costar, Francois Cluzet, you won’t forget either of them after this.

The Intouchables is a true story about the friendship between two very different people, a wealthy quadriplegic and his far-from-wealthy caregiver.

Written/directed by Olivier Nakache, plus Eric Toledano, and highlighting the pricelessness of true friendship, this well-paced French drama/comedy will have you smiling and laughing more times than you can count.

If you thought all that was enough things to love in one movie, there’s also the music to take in.

ALOHA (2015): More Bradley Cooper Please!

More Bradley Cooper, Please!

It’s hard for me not to feel this way after his brilliant Oscar-nominated performance in American Sniper (2014); not to say that his new movie, Aloha is a similar kind of film, mind you

Writer/Director, Cameron Crowe – the man responsible for the 1996 hit, Jerry Maguire is back with the story of a celebrated military contractor (Cooper) who must choose between two love interests, played by Emma Stone and Rachel McAdams.

As we all know, love triangles can get notoriously tricky, particularly if you have to choose. Let’s see how things turn out for the parties involved in Aloha. Maybe we can get a few tips on how to manoeuvre similar predicaments.

What a shock that Jennifer Lawrence is nowhere to be seen in this movie. I’d become so used to her and Cooper sharing screen time. Luckily, we do have two great comedy Actors in the shape of Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) and Danny McBride of Pineapple Express (2008)This Is The End (2013) and other Seth Rogen/Judd Apatow movies.

Bring on the love triangle shenanigans!

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Trainwreck (2015).

I love New York and I love film. When a promising new comedy is set in New York city, the joy that occurs within me is very real.

Trainwreck, the latest Judd Apatow-directed comedy, is my ‘can’t wait to see’ film of the moment because it looks like just the kind of fun I need.

I have a feeling you’re in agreement.

Trainwreck Release Dates: July 17th 2015 (US); August 14th, 2015 (UK)…
