LEGEND (2015): For The Humour & Double Tom Hardy Experience…

Legend (2016), Tom Hardy as Ronnie Kray
Legend (2016), Tom Hardy as Ronnie Kray

While telling the story of two of Britain’s most notorious criminals, the Kray twins, I can confirm that thanks to the combination of all the characters, dialogue, music and cinematography of 1960s London, Legend did an adequate job keeping me engaged.

Besides Tom Hardy who is, shocker-not shocker, just brilliant in his task of portraying both Reginald (Reggie) and Ronald (Ronnie) Kray, another big draw for me was the delightful Britishness of the humour in Legend.

Prior to this movie, my main experience of London’s East End gangster/criminal world was Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels (1998). The pace and rhythm of that movie is one of the best things about it. In comparison to Legend, granted, the period in time is quite different, but I did find myself wanting for things to move along a tad quicker.

Each time the two brothers were on screen simultaneously, those were the most engaging moments, and not just because I was curious to see how well director Brian Helgeland handled the reality of Tom Hardy essentially ‘talking to himself.’

Ronnie and Reggie’s sibling bond and the dynamics of their relationship are the most interesting aspects of this story. We get to experience and witness this bond in Helgeland’s movie, but I’d have loved for more of the film to be dedicated to the story of the brothers, perhaps as young boys/ men. I wanted a clearer picture of what it took to create the reality that became their lives. Without a look back, the story felt incomplete.

In my fantasy of this movie, I’d say, either split the story of the Kray twins into two films, or forget about the relationship between Reggie and Francis, It’s boring – and instead focus on the most important love affair instead, the one between the two brothers. After all, it is the thing that ultimately decided their fate.

I don’t think that Legend is a bad film. It just simply left me wanting, more than I would have liked. Still, if you’re curious, watch it for the Tom Hardy excellence.

THE TRUST (2016): New Trailer From Elijah Wood, Nicolas Cage…

The Trust (2016), Elijah Wood, Nicolas Cage.

Today’s crime thriller, starring Elijah Wood and Nicolas Cage looks promising.

I’m still holding onto the dream of seeing Cage in films I loved as much as I did Face/ Off (1997). Fingers, toes and everything crossed that this comes close being as fun.

The Trust Release Dates: May 27th, 2016 (UK)…

DHEEPAN (2015): New Trailer From Jacques Audiard…

Dheepan (2015), Jesuthasan Antonythasan
Dheepan (2015), Jesuthasan Antonythasan

Todays trailer is for crime/drama Dheepan and it comes from writer/director Jacques Audiard, the man behind A Prophet (2009) and Rust and Bone (2012).

Starring Jesuthasan Antonythasan, Dheepan follows a Sri Lankan man, woman and girl who pose as a family and flee the civil war to settle at a housing project outside Paris, France.

I’m blessed that I don’t personally know what such a fate can be like and that’s precisely why I can’t wait to see how the story turns out.

Considering Audiard’s reputation, we can rest assured that quality is as good as guaranteed. I’m just hoping that things work out for the seemingly innocent protagonists. Nevertheless, whatever the truth is, I’m happy to know that also.

Dheepan Release Dates: April, 2016 (2016) April 8th, 2016 (UK)…

KILL YOUR FRIENDS (2015): New Trailer Starring Nicholas Hoult, Ed Skrein, James Corden…

Kill Your Friends (2015), Nicholas Hoult

So far, it’s clear that Kill Your Friends, the latest film from Nicholas Hoult, Ed Skrein and James Corden is at least as dark as the movie’s title suggests. I like the way the trailer is quite entertaining on it’s own, without making me strongly want to watch the actual movie.

In the event that I do decide to tune in to Kill Your Friends, it’ll be to see what Hoult does with the character more than anything else. For now, something is telling me to watch American Psycho (2000) again. There’s also a desire in me to dance around like a crazy person after hearing the party music in this trailer.

Rosanna Arquette, Tom Riley and Georgia King also star.

CRIMINAL (2016): New Trailer Starring Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Costner, Gal Gadot…

Criminal (2016), Ryan Reynolds
Criminal (2016), Ryan Reynolds

The plot of Criminal involves the planting of a deceased persons skills and memories into another individual.

Sounds a lot like sci-fi to me, But it’s the brand new  action/drama from director of The Iceman (2012), Ariel Vroman. Ryan Reynolds, Gary Oldman, Kevin Costner and Gal Gadot are the stars.

This trailer, though not perfect, has me interested. The involvement of Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones gives me the most hope.

I wonder why Criminal isn’t categorised under sci-fi.

Criminal Release Dates: April 15th, 2016 (US & UK)…
