REBEL RIDGE (2024): The Things I Liked…

Outside of Mufasa -The Lion King (2024), Rebel Ridge is my first time watching a film led by Aaron Pierre.

From writer-director Jeremy Saulnier, Pierre plays a former Marine who finds himself up against small-town corruption, the kind that leads to an eventual standoff with the local police chief.

Also starring Don Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, and David Denman, I found Pierre’s performance engaging, and the story held my attention until the final third, when my attention slipped just enough for me to remember I had a phone.

My favourite moments, aside from Pierre’s emotional journey, include the reveal when the corrupt officers realise who they’re dealing with, and a second reveal at Rebel Ridge towards the end.

Would I say you’re missing out if you skip Saulnier’s film altogether? No. But if the premise really appeals, it may be worth your time, especially as a showcase for Pierre’s acting. Otherwise, I’d suggest A History of Violence (2005) instead, still my favourite action/crime/thriller set in an American small town.

Have you seen Rebel Ridge?

LANTERNS (2026): New Trailer Starring Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Nathan Fillion, Kelly Macdonald…

Lanterns (2026), Aaron Pierre, HBO Max
Lanterns (2026), Aaron Pierre, HBO Max

Created by Tom King and Chris Mundy, new eight-part series, Lanterns, stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Nathan Fillion and Kelly Macdonald.

The story follows John Stewart (Pierre) and Hal Jordan (Chandler), two Lanterns, a.k.a., intergalactic cops, drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery. One where they’re investigating a murder in the American heartland.

Promising‘, one might say.

I particularly like what happens from 1:29 in this trailer, and the music that kicks in around 1:42. Is it just me, or does it sound a lot like something from Black Panther? Especially toward the end of that trailer.

Before this, which sounds like a fun premise, all I really knew about Green Lantern, as a non–comic book reader, was that he’s a superhero Ryan Reynolds played back in 2011… much to the disappointment of many fans.

It’s still too early to say how this version will turn out, but I’m here for the unexpected, chemistry-filled pairing of Pierre and Chandler.

Lastly, long-standing Green Lantern fan or not, how is this looking to you?

Jason Ritter, Nicole Ari Parker, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Sherman Augustus, Michael Ocampo, Ulrich Thomsen, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson and Romeo Brown also star.

Lanterns Release Dates: August, 2026 (US & UK)…

MUFASA – THE LION KING (2024): The Things I Liked…

Mufasa - The Lion King (2024), Aaron Pierre (Mufasa Voice), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Scar Voice), Walt Disney Studios
Mufasa – The Lion King (2024), Aaron Pierre (Mufasa Voice), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Scar Voice), Walt Disney Studios

I’m happy I had fun watching Mufasa – The Lion King. Putting aside the fact that I soon found Pumba and Timone quite annoying, compared to The Lion King 2019, this time, my experience didn’t abruptly end because of the thought, ‘This looks and feels strange. Best to watch a nature documentary instead.’

I had no such feelings or thoughts while I watched Mufasa – The Lion King; Aaron, Pierre, Donald Glover, Seth Rogen and Mads Mikkelsen’s Barry Jenkins-directed animated adventure.  Instead, I enjoyed the music, especially after the halfway point.

Mikkelson was a memorable villain – no surprises there. Furthermore, all the character development felt un-rushed, the story engaging, and the emotional journeys and fight sequences satisfying. As such, today, to my rather pleasant surprise, I sing the praises of Mufasa – The Lion King. I sing them, I say!

Watch it, if you haven’t already.

MUFASA – THE LION KING (2024): New Trailer Starring Mads Mikkelsen, Seth Rogen, Donald Glover and Kelvin Harrison Jr…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Mufasa The Lion King (2024).

Director Barry Jenkins’s latest movie, Mufasa – The Lion King has a new more intriguing trailer. that stars Seth Rogen, Mads Mikkelsen, Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr.

I’ve decided I’ll try to watch Mufasa – The Lion King. Hopefully, unlike the first CGI The Lion KIng Movie (2019), I won’t be compelled to stop because my brain tells me something is off visually. And that I should watch an actual nature documentary instead.

I also don’t want to miss the Mufasa/Scar origin story. My fingers are crossed that I make it to the movie’s end this time.

Donald Glover, Anika Noni Rose, Lennie James, Billy Eichner, John Kani, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Blue Ivy Carter, Keith David, Beyoncé, Tiffany Boone, Folake Olowofoyeku and Abdul Salis also star

Mufasa – The Lion King Release Dates: December 20th (US & UK)…
