FIRST REFORMED (2018): New Trailer From Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried, Cedric the Entertainer, Michael Gaston…

First Reformed (2018), Ethan Hawke.png

First Reformed is a drama/thriller about a solitary, middle-aged parish pastor (Ethan Hawke) at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York.

When a pregnant parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) asks the Reverend to counsel her husband, the clergyman finds himself plunged into his own tormented past and equally despairing future.

Directed by Paul Schrader, Hawke and Seyfried are joined by Cedric the Entertainer, Michael Gaston, Van Hansis and Ronald Peet.

I’m in for the unique story and a great performance by Hawke. You can just see it in his eyes, can’t you?

First Reformed Release Dates: May 18th, 2018 (US)…

In dark comedy Gringo, which stars Charlize Theron, David Oyelowo and Joel Edgerton, Oyelowo is Harold Soyinka, a former law-abiding citizen who, in his battle to survive, finds himself a wanted criminal.

Directed by Nash Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried, Thandie Newton and Sharlto Copley also star.

I’m looking forward to seeing Oyelowo in a comedy role because this trailer is fun. Also, Copley and Theron are usually great in comedy roles.

It’s certainly not a bad thing that something about this trailer reminds me of We’re the Millers (2013), a rather fun comedy.

Gringo Release Dates: March 9th, 2018 (US & UK)…

LOVE THE COOPERS (2015): The Things I Liked…

Christmas With The Coopers (2015), Olivia Wilde, Jake Lacy
Christmas With The Coopers (2015), Olivia Wilde, Jake Lacy

I would describe Love The Coopers as less like Elf (2003) and more like ABC TV series, Brothers & Sisters.

Directed by Jessie Nelson and starring John Goodman, Diane Keaton, Ed Helms, Olivia Wilde and Steve Martin,  Love the Coopers is one of those holiday films that reminds you that every family has unpleasant tensions and challenging relationships. Nevertheless, the good news is, in this film, the tense moments are wisely interspersed with humour and cheer.

The character Wilde plays is my favourite, partly because I find Wilde rather likeable in real life. Also, I relate most to aspects of her character, above all the others.

I wanted to watch something that didn’t demand too much from me, and that’s exactly what I got. Love the Coopers is unlikely to make my list of top 10 favourite Christmas movies, but it is easy, relaxing viewing with a side of romance – and surely, one can always make a little time for something like that.

Anthony Mackie, Jake Lacy, Amanda Seyfried and Marisa Tomei also star.

WHILE WE’RE YOUNG (2015): A Comedy About Some Of The Challenges Of Middle Age…

While We're Young (2014), Ben Stiller Naomi Watts
While We’re Young (2014), Ben Stiller Naomi Watts

Witten and directed by Noah Baumbach; While We’re Young stars Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts as a middle aged couple, who are having difficulty letting go of the idea of themselves as young. Especially so, after they meet and befriend two 25 year olds played by Amanda Seyfried and Adam Driver.

The jokes about ageing are my favourite moments in While We’re Young. I also enjoyed the character study of the man Stiller plays. In particular, the way he’s an example of what it can be like during middle age, when certain paths/projects that had been an option years before, end up not being committed to or completed.

I really hope that when it’s my turn, I’ll be able to handle the idea of youth being something in my past with at least a touch of grace. However, based on the sizeable meltdown I had when I turned twenty. I wouldn’t take the risk of betting on it.

Summer isn’t over yet but if you didn’t already know, it’s time for the Christmas movie trailer. And Love The Coopers is the first one I’ve seen for 2015.

Does it look refreshingly different? No, but it does look like this Jessie Nelson-directed seasonal film will provide precisely the mildly amusing, yet heartwarming entertainment one can enjoy after stuffing one’s face on the Lord’s special day.

The cast list includes familiar names like Olivia Wilde, Diane Keaton, John Goodman, Amanda Seyfried, Marisa Tomei and Anthony Mackie.

Out November 2015 (U.S.) and December 2015 (U.K.)
