INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (1994): The Things I Liked…

For the longest time, my favourite Brad Pitt movie has been Fight Club (1999). Watching just a few clips of the trailer on IMDB almost had me postponing writing this review, so I could rewatch it right away. That is, until I remembered I’m supposed to be working hard on my discipline this month, and so I’m back here happily typing. After all, Interview with the Vampire, the Neil Jordan-directed drama/fantasy/horror film, based on Anne Rice’s novel of the same name, is the main focus of this post.

Starring Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Christian Slater, Kirsten Dunst, and Antonio Banderas, Jordan’s film is about Louis (Pitt), a vampire, telling his epic life story. A life of love, loneliness, hunger, and betrayal.

I’ll get right to it, Jordan’s film is one of my all-time favourite movie experiences. I enjoyed almost everything about it. Whether it be the story, dialogue, performances, production design, cinematography, or costumes, I simply saw beauty everywhere I looked as this film played. Except, of course, each time the camera was focused on rodents. I watched through my fingers during those scenes.

There are no bad performances in Interview with the Vampire. For me and many others, it’s a young Kirsten Dunst who stands out most. Because she brought an emotional depth to her character, Claudia, in a way that many would deem impossible for an eleven-year-old performer to do.

If you haven’t already, watch Interview with the Vampire, for all the reasons above. And whether or not becoming a vampire is of interest to you, don’t be surprised if, within an hour of screen time with Louis, Lestat, and or Armand, you find yourself agreeing that the only way to watch this movie is with the side of your neck exposed.

What is the title of your favourite Brad Pitt movie?

BLINK TWICE (2024): The Things I Liked…

Mystery/thriller Blink Twice is a decent writing/directorial debut for Zoë Kravitz.

Starring Naomi Ackie, Channing Tatum, Adria Arjona and Alia Shawkat, it all begins when cocktail waitress Frida (Ackie) and her friend Jess (Shawkat) get invited to tech billionaire Slater King’s private island. Unbeknownst to the two friends, their time on the island will not be quite the carefree experience they’d hoped it would be.

The visual style of Blink Twice is the first thing I liked right away. Then came the performances and the fact that the story builds to some thrilling and unexpected twists and turns.

Yes, there was a moment or two when I wanted things to move slightly quicker, but soon after the halfway point, I was a very pleased audience member.

All the actors in Blink Twice performed well, including Tatum, whom we hadn’t seen in this type of dark role before. So, if you’re curious, watch it for these reasons, and how well that final third of the film is executed.

BLINK TWICE (2024): New Trailer From Zoe Kravitz, Channing Tatum, Naomi Ackie, Alia Shawkat, Adria Arjona, Christian Slater…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Blink Twice (2024).

Key cast includes Channing Tatum, Naomi Ackie, Christian Slater, Alia Shawkat and Adria Arjona.

Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut tells the story of Slater King, a tech billionaire who invites a cocktail waitress to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. But of course, mysterious and clearly terrifying happenings soon begin.

Such strong The Menu (2022) vibes I’m getting with this one. I wonder what Slater King’s selection criteria are for the people he invites to his island.

Oh, wait, I just remembered that the original title for this movie was ‘P***y Island‘. Case closed, I guess? There may still be a chance that my assumptions are incorrect. Either way, it’s going to be fun to watch Slater King get what he deserves, right?. YEAH! MORE VENGEANCE!

I promise that I’m not unhealthily obsessed with vengeance, regardless of what the above exclamation may suggest.

Simon Rex, Haley Joel Osment, Liz Caribel, Levon Hawke, Trew Mullen, Geena Davis, Kyle MacLachlan and Cris Costa also star.

Blink Twice Release dates: August 23rd, 2024 (US & UK)…

THE WIFE (2018): The Thing I Liked…

The Wife (2019), Glenn Close
The Wife (2018), Glenn Close

Imagine being way past middle age and finding yourself ill at ease with your life choices. This is the situation Joan Castleman (Glenn Close) finds herself in as she travels to Stockholm with her husband, a man who’s due to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Featuring good performances by all involved, especially Close, I enjoyed this story and the way it handles regret. I particularly like how expertly Close portrays the complicated emotional journey of a woman in a specific predicament that is the kind of situation most modern independent women should hopefully no longer find themselves in.

I’m quite certain that my favourite movie about regret will probably always be Magnolia (1999). Yet, The Wife too is memorable in the way it handles the subject. I felt bad for Joan, not so much because of the life she chose but because she let what seemed like other people’s negative experiences change the direction of her entire life.

Another way to look at Joan’s story is to conclude that she fell in love, and that truth took priority over all else – including her own morality and the kind of treatment and respect a person really ought to demand in every situation.

More than anything, for me, The Wife is a reminder to think, think and think again before you sacrifice a key part of yourself for another – especially in the name of love.  The Wife is also just a well-acted movie you should see if the themes intrigue you enough.

Lastly, fun fact! The actress who plays young Joan is actually Glenn Close’s real-life daughter, Annie Starke.
