HAIL, CAESAR! (2015): The Thing I Liked…

Hail Caesar (2015), Tilda Swinton

I’m sad to say that Hail, Caesar! has proven to be quite the bore. Regrettably, I found the trailer far more entertaining than the movie.

The trailer is funny, filled with the glamour, colours and seemingly odd characters of 1950s Hollywood; all good things. I liked the fact that it didn’t give much away in terms of where the story was going or even who the key protagonist might be, and it moved at a more than reasonable pace.

Unfortunately,  a slow pace and an inadequately intriguing story that never goes anywhere are my biggest issues with Hail, Caesar! Part of the problem might be that there were too many stories trying to happen at the same time.

On the positive side, in addition to the humorous moments (the best of which you see in the trailer) what I do like about Hail, Caesar!  is the glamour and colourful attire worn by the film’s main female characters. Specifically, the characters played far too briefly by Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton and Veronica Osorio. Had it not been for these highlights, I’m not sure I’d have made it through to the end.

Overall, I think I’d have much preferred to see only the funny moments in this movie; something like a Saturday Night Live comedy sketch format. An outrageous suggestion I’m sure, but I really was hoping for more from a Coen brothers written/directed film. I guess I’ll always shave the costumes and glamour.

Needless to say, Hail, Caesar! is not my favourite film by the Coens. That title will probably always belong to the excellent, No Country For Old Men (2007), a  movie I’ll continue to recommend forever more.

THE DRESSMAKER (2015): For The Story, Fashion, Style…

The Dressmaker (2016), Kate Winstlet

The Dressmaker is a fun revenge drama set in a rural small town in Australia. I use the word ‘fun’ because of the dialogue, characters, cinematography and the haute couture fashion and colours of the 1950s.

The character played by Hugo Weaving is the source of several laughs and a definite highlight. And, as always, the film’s star, Kate Winslet, delivers a wonderful performance. The movie’s beautiful soundtrack, courtesy of composer David Hirschfelder, is also another plus.

Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse and based on the novel by Rosalie Ham, I say watch The Dressmaker because it’s good. Furthermore, you probably won’t be able to guess how things will unfold before they do.

Sarah Snook, Judy Davis, and Liam Hemsworth also star. Here’s the trailer for a taster.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of First Monday In May (2016).

For all lovers of art, especially art that comes in the shape of fashion, today’s trailer is for a new documentary about 2015’s Met Ball.

Directed by Andrew Rossi, the film follows Vogue Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour. She takes us along for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the planning and organisation of one of fashion’s most prestigious annual events. One that brings together the most celebrated figures in fashion, music, film and art.

I’ll be watching for all the art involved. That and the expected ups and downs that go with organising a gathering as big and international as the Met Gala.

First Monday In May will open at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 13, 2016.

THE TRUE COST (2015): Great Documentary About The People Behind Your Clothes…

The True Cost (2015), Documentary
The True Cost (2015), Documentary

You’ve probably heard about the tragic stories of inhumane factory working conditions in the developing world. Conditions that have lead to far too may deaths that could have been avoided. You may also have heard about the continued use of such factories by numerous multinational retailers.

The True Cost is a documentary directed by Andrew Morgan and it covers the ills of the fashion industry, particularly the effects of the prioritisation of profit over people and the planet.

I’m glad that I made time for this documentary because it opened my eyes to a few truths that before, I only had a vague idea about. Morgan’s documentary does a good job of identifying and explaining the root cause(s) of the problems within the fashion industry. But even more than that, the viewer is presented with ideas for positive ways to move forward by some of the great people already working towards and advocating for change.

By the end, I understood that the issues presented in The True Cost aren’t the easiest to solve. Even though most people have the best intentions, they’re not always able to play their part. As such, thank goodness for everyone impassioned enough to do all that they can.

A random thought that went through my mind as I watched is: ‘How great things would be if only the World’s empathy deficiency was something that could be fixed with a prompt inoculation.’
