BUGONIA (2025): The Things I Liked…

Bugonia (2025), Emma Stone, Focus Features
Bugonia (2025), Emma Stone, Focus Features

The acting in director Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia, a comedy/sci-fi movie about the kidnapping of a high-profile CEO by conspiracy theorists, is fantastic.

I thoroughly enjoyed how Emma Stone was able to completely disappear into her character, and the unexpected turns the story took, a story I partly view as a love letter to Earth and to bees.

As is typical of Lanthimos’s films, Bugonia is a mixture of humour and darkness. Thankfully for me, the shift between the two isn’t as jarring as it was in The Lobster (2015). Still, as hilarious as it was to watch some of the conspiracy theory madness unfold, unsurprisingly, it was equally sobering. In fact, there came a point after the kidnapping when I was super eager for Stone’s character’s freedom.

It may not be fully comfortable to watch throughout, but definitely give it a chance if you’re curious. It’s a good, sometimes funny story that’s so superbly acted that you’ll almost forget about the moments when the musical score is too imposing. And you’ll almost disregard a moment that appeared to be a continuity error, where Stone’s character is supposed to be limping but isn’t.

Aidan Delbis, Jesse Plemons, and Alicia Silverstone round out a seriously talented cast.

Have you seen Bugonia yet?

BUGONIA (2025): New Trailer From Yorgos Lanthimos, Starring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Alicia Silverstone

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Bugonia (2025).

Jesse Plemons, Emma Stone and Alicia Silverstone’s latest movie Bugonia is a sci-fi/comedy from Poor Things (2023) director Yorgos Lanthimos.

Bugonia follows the antics of two conspiracy-obsessed men who believe the high-powered CEO of a major company to be an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. So, they kidnap her.

Since this is a Lanthimos film, we probably can’t expect an easy viewing experience. Because it’s a Lanthimos, Stone and Plemons film, quality is just about guaranteed.

I’m eager to learn whether Stone’s CEO character is an actual alien. What kind of company is she really running? What are the kidnappers’ stories? Fingers crossed that answers will be forthcoming.

Aidan Delbis, Vanessa Eng, Yaisa, Cedric Dumornay, Marc T. Lewis and Roger Carvalho also star.

Bugonia Release Dates: October 31st, 2025 (US); November 7th, 2025 (UK)…

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (2023): New Trailer From Martin Scorsese, Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons…

A historical crime/drama set in the 1920s is the latest from Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Killers of the Flower Moon focuses on the relationship between the United States and its indigenous people, especially after members of the Osage tribe are mysteriously murdered, leading to an investigation involving F.B.I director J. Edgar Hoover.

I’ll start by addressing the humongous elephant in the room, following the above potentially confusing introductory paragraphs. Killers of the Flower Moon will not feature Dicaprio reprising his role as Hoover, as per the 2011 film, J. Edgar. He’s playing Ernest Burkhart and only Ernest Burkhart.

Now that we’ve cleared that up, and my giggles have dissipated, I’m intrigued by the smarts referred to at 0:22 in this trailer. I’m also very curious to see the evolution of Dicaprio and Gladstone’s characters.

Dark history is certainly what we’re in for with this one. As such, the question is, will you be ready to see this story told by such brilliant filmmakers? If so, how are you feeling about sitting through the 3.26-hour run time?

Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, Cara Jade Myers, Jillian Dion, Jason Isbell, Tantoo Cardinal, Brendan Fraser, Janae Collins, William Belleau, Sturgill Simpson, Louis Cancelmi, Jason Isbell and Scott Shepherd also star

I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS (2020): The Thing I Liked…

I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020), Jessie Buckley, Netflix

There are some movies I’ll start watching, realise they’re terrible and quit within ten or fifteen minutes. Writer/director Charlie Kaufman’s latest drama/thriller, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, is not that kind of movie. One might say it’s worse because I’d hoped to like it far more than I did.

I expected more because I enjoyed Anomalisa (2015), and had hoped that I’m Thinking of Ending Things would be similarly pleasing and thought-provoking. It may well be thought-provoking for some, but post-viewing, it did not inspire me to think anything significant, except ‘what a waste of two hours,’ particularly since the peculiar happenings that inspired me to watch the movie in the first place never get explained.

Kaufman’s story of a young woman who comes to question everything she thought she knew about her new boyfriend, upon arriving at his parent’s secluded farm is a film that may have fans raving on about the way it explores loneliness, death, sanity and so on. Yet, I for one didn’t want to work as hard and have as much patience as I’m Thinking of Ending Things requires of its audience.

By the third or fourth time that Jessie Buckley’s character says the words ‘I’m thinking of ending things‘, the film had lost me, and I wanted to stop watching; yet I needed to see how the story would end.

Buckley, Toni Colette, David Thewlis and Jessie Plemons all perform brilliantly. Still, none of it proved enough for me. Regardless of the ‘stylish’ way the story is edited and told; the scares and other creative choices, it just didn’t result in a satisfying experience for me. Instead it felt incomplete.

I’m sure that very serious fans of Kaufman will likely enjoy this the most. For everyone else, sure, give it a chance if you’re SUPER curious.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020).

Based on Iain Reid’s acclaimed novel, I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a new drama/horror/thriller about a young woman who comes to question everything she thought she knew about her new boyfriend, and herself. All upon arriving to her boyfriend’s parent’s secluded farm.

Directed and co-written by Charlie Kaufman, I’m Thinking of Ending Things stars Jessie Buckley, Toni Collette, David Thewlis and Jesse Plemons.

With parents that peculiar, maybe she should have trusted her gut much sooner! Actually, since I haven’t read the book on which this movie is based, it may well be that Buckley’s character is the most peculiar one,

The last Kaufman movie I saw was Anomalisa (2015). One of these days, I’ll finally make time for what is perhaps his most popular movie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).

Colby Minifie, Jason Ralph, Abby Quinn, Guy Boyd, Ashlyn Alessi, Hadley Robinson, Teddy Coluca, Anthony Robert Grasso and Austin Ferris also star.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things Release Dates: September 4th, 2020 (US)…
