JOKER – FOLIE À DEUX (2024): New Trailer Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz…

Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga; it’s time for that long-awaited new Joker – Folie À Deux (Madness for Two) trailer.

I’m quite sure that the story that director Todd Phillips has chosen to tell will be engaging. Nevertheless, since many iterations of the Joker story have been told, it’s not the story that is pulling me in. Rather, it’s my curiosity about the performances and especially the visuals.

Part of what made Joker 2019 a must-see was the deep dive into his origin story, like never before. Now that we’re in the phase where he’s finally gained power, it will be interesting to see if this second part is presented in a way that doesn’t feel too much like a repetition of the ’empowered Joker story’. To begin with, Joker Folie À Deux is a musical, which is certainly different.

What are your thoughts after seeing the above trailer?

Brendan Gleeson, Steve Coogan, Zazie Beetz, Ken Leung, Jacob Lofland, Gattlin Griffith, Leigh Gill Sharon Washington, Troy Metcalf, Harry Lawtey, Tim Dillon, George Carroll and Mike Houston also star.

JOKER – FOLIE À DEUX (2024): New Trailer From Todd Phillips, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Lady Gaga, Catherine Keener…

Joker – Folie À Deux (Madness for Two), the highly anticipated sequel to the story of Gotham City’s most beloved villain is soon upon us.

Directed and co-written by Todd Philips, this time, Joaquin Phoenix is joined by Lady Gaga, Steve Coogan, Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener to name just a few.

Admittedly, much of the subject matter of Joker (2019) made me sad. Thankfully, however, all the tragic material was balanced by the plenty there was to appreciate as far as great filmmaking is concerned. It is largely for this reason, plus my general appreciation of the talents of Phoenix and Phillips, that we can all consider my ticket for this release well and truly purchased.

We all have to suffer for our art sometimes, right? In this case, it’s suffering for the art I love to consume, as opposed to the art that I’m creating.

Another way I’ll potentially suffer while watching this is because I dislike, am turned off by and largely HATE 99.9% of musicals. But, hey. I at least have to try in this case, right?

Lastly, can Phillips, Joaquin and I also consider your ticket for Joker – Folie à Deux, well and truly purchased? Confirm at once!

Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung, Jacob Lofland, Gattlin Griffith, Leigh Gill Sharon Washington, Troy Metcalf, Harry Lawtey, Tim Dillon, George Carroll and Mike Houston also star.

JOKER (2019): The Things I Liked…

Joker (2019), Joaquin Phoenix, Warner Bros. Pictures
Joker (2019), Joaquin Phoenix, Warner Bros. Pictures

I’ve liked Joaquin Phoenix ever since his brilliant performance in Ridley Scott’s much loved Gladiator (2000). I therefore had no doubt he’d deliver a truly memorable performance as Joker, Gotham City’s most iconic villain.

Watching Aurthur Fleck’s (Phoenix) journey from social outcast to psychopathic murderer is a viewing experience I enjoyed for more than just Phoenix’s brilliant physical and emotional performance. Before Joker, I don’t think I’d truly paid attention to the lyrics of Frank Sinatra’s That’s Life. The clever use of this song, the film’s musical score and soundtrack are other key highlights.

Joker is undeniably a good film. Yet, for me personally, there is something about it that meant I found myself not particularly overly enthusiastic post-viewing. One might even say that Joker is quite depressing because it’s almost ‘too real,’ when compared with what’s been happening in the US. Another reason it seemed something of a downer is the film’s heavy focus on people who are, to put it lightly, ‘unpleasant’. I of course understand director Todd Phillip’s reasons, considering the nature of the story being told. Yet, it’s never easy for me when the protagonist is also an anti-hero of the most insane and murderous kind, particularly when there’s no humour involved.

Overall, what I like most about Phillip’s film is how well-mapped Joker’s journey from victim to anti-hero is. From powerless to fully empowered and in control. From ‘How much more can he take?’ ‘Where can he go from here?’ to ‘There it is’. ‘The camel’s back has completely snapped and there’s no going back

Lastly, I can’t deny that my colour loving self rather enjoyed the red suit, yellow vest, plus  green shirt and hair look. Especially while Joker was on those famous stairs.

You’ve probably already seen it. But if not, do it for Phoenix’s performance and all else that’s good.

JOKER (2019): New Trailer From Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Joker (2019).

Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz and Robert De Niro, Joker is an exploration of Aurthur Fleck, a man disregarded by society and eventually driven insane until he become’s Gotham City’s best known psychopathic murderer.

Directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover (2009), other key cast includes Bryan Callen, Shea Whigham and Frances Conroy.

I’m going to start by addressing the rather humongous and certainly beautiful elephant in the room. ‘Heath Ledger, Heath Ledger, Heath Ledger, Heath Ledger. The Dark Knight , The Dark Knight , The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight.’ OK. I’m done.

To clarify, my intention is certainly not to take anything away from Phoenix who I also appreciate, especially since his great work in Gladiator (2000). However, I just had to do the above because Ledger’s performance was pure magic and permanently fixed in my memory as one of the best performances I’ve ever seen.

I’m still definitely looking forward to watching this deep-dive into Joker’s journey, from failed comic to psychopathic murderer. Additionally, I actually can’t wait to compare both Phoenix and Ledger’s performances – just to see which I prefer.

Glenn Fleshler, Brett Cullen, Marc Maron, Douglas Hodge and Josh Pais also star.

DON’T WORRY, HE WON’T GET FAR ON FOOT (2018): New Trailer From Joaquin Phoenix, Jonah Hill, Jack Black, Rooney Mara…

Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot is the new Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting (1997) co-written and directed movie/biography about John Callahan, a young man who became paralysed after a car accident at age 21, and turned to drawing as a form of therapy.

Joaquin Phoenix, Jonah Hill, Jack Black and Rooney Mara star…

This one looks like an impressive Phoenix performance. I’m excited to see what Jack Black and Jonah Hill bring to the film; two comedy men who are equally good in dramatic roles.

Having not heard of John Callahan until now, maybe this film will treat us to some great drawings. Lastly, I just noticed that the three main male actors all have ‘J’ names. Random useless fact. That’s all.

Beth Ditto and Udo Kier also star.

Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot release Dates: May 11th, 2018 (US)…
