Read my spoiler-free movie review of Joker (2019).

Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz and Robert De Niro, Joker is an exploration of Aurthur Fleck, a man disregarded by society and eventually driven insane until he become’s Gotham City’s best known psychopathic murderer.

Directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover (2009), other key cast includes Bryan Callen, Shea Whigham, Frances Conroy…

I’m going to start by addressing the rather humongous and certainly beautiful elephant in the room. ‘Heath Ledger, Heath Ledger, Heath Ledger, Heath Ledger. The Dark Knight , The Dark Knight , The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight.’ OK. I’m done.

To clarify, my intention is certainly not to take anything away from Phoenix who I also appreciate, especially since his great work in Gladiator (2000). However, I just had to do the above because Ledger’s performance was pure magic and permanently fixed in my memory as one of the best performances I’ve ever seen.

I’m still definitely looking forward to watching this deep-dive into Joker’s journey, from failed comic to psychopathic murderer. Additionally, I actually can’t wait to compare both Phoenix and Ledger’s performances – just to see which I prefer.

Glenn Fleshler, Brett Cullen, Marc Maron, Douglas Hodge and Josh Pais also star.

Joker Release Dates: October 4th, 2019 (US & UK)…

The Sisters Brothers (2018), Joaquin Phoenix

Director Jacques Audiard’s latest film is set in 1850s Oregon and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, Riz Ahmed Rutger Hauer and John C. Reilly.

The story of Audiard’s western centres around an infamous duo of assassins known as the Sisters brothers who are chasing a gold prospector…

I wasn’t very sure about this one the first time I watched the trailer. Today though, I’m into the awkwardness of of the humour and trailer edit. Funny how things change in a day. Furthermore, the cast is so very good that surely it can’t, won’t and shouldn’t be so bad.

The Sisters Brothers Release Dates: September 21st, 2018 (US)…

This one looks like an impressive Joaquin Phoenix performance. Excited to see what Jack Black and Jonah Hill bring to the film; two comedy men who are also good in dramatic roles. Having not heard of John Callahan untill now, maybe this movie treat us to some great drawings.

Lastly, I Just randomly noticed that the three main male actors have ‘J’ names.

MARY MAGDALENE (2018): New Trailer From Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor…

Mary Magdalene (2018), Rooney Mara
Mary Magdalene (2018), Rooney Mara

Set in the first century C.E, Mary Magdalene is a new drama about controversial biblical character, friend and follower of Jesus ChristMary Magdalene

Garth Davis directs while Rooney MaraJoaquin Phoenix and Chiwetel Ejiofor star…

I don’t know that Phoenix as Jesus Christ feels like a perfect casting instinctually. However I’m very open to be proven wrong, especially since Phoenix is quite the talent.

Also, not that this movie will be as brutal as Mel Gibson’s The Passion of The Christ (2004) –  but I kind of don’t want to sign up to witness all that violence again. It’s a tough one since I want to watch the story of Mary Magdalene, sadly there’s just no telling her story without Jesus particularly because she’s with him till the very unfortunate end. What to do, what to do…

Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Ariane Labed, Ryan Corr, Tahar Rahim and Lubna Azabal also star.

Mary Maggalene Release Dates: March 16th, 2018 (UK); March 30th, 2018 (US)…

YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE (2017): New Trailer From Joaquin Phoenix, Ekaterina Samsonov, Alessandro Nivola…

You Were Never Really Here (2017), Joaquin Phoenix

In You Were Never Really Here, Joaquin Phoenix plays a war veteran whose attempt to save a young girl from a sex trafficking ring goes horribly wrong. Directed by Lynne Ramsay; Alessandro Nivola and Ekaterina Samsonov also star.

The sound / music in the first 45 seconds was quite challenging for my delicate ears; nevertheless, I’m interested in this movie. Phoenix is great and the film’s mood reminds me of one of my favourite Tom Hardy movies, Locke (2013)Also, the film’s synopsis brings to mind The Equalizer (2014) – except things probably didn’t go quite as terribly for Denzel Washington’s character.
