THE DIPLOMAT SEASON 2 (2024): The Things I Liked…

The second season of The Diplomat, the new Netflix series I raved about most in 2023, recently landed.

I’ll begin by admitting that I prefer the first season. It featured more humour, and the finale episode cliffhanger was more memorable to me.

Season two has periods of undeniably good writing, great acting and some humour. However, overall, ‘okay’ is the word I’d use to describe how I feel about it.

I’m sure that part of the reason for my less enthusiastic reaction has something to do with a diplomat’s general day-to-day, as highly dramatised as it is, no longer being new and exciting to me. It could also be that my interest in what diplomats get up do has waned.

Overall, as okay as the six-episode second season is, I enjoyed the execution/story less than the first season, just not so much less that I wouldn’t give a third season a chance.

Watch season one if you’re curious but probably expect a little less for season two.

If you’ve already watched season two, at least the cliffhanger leaves something to look forward to.

Have you watched both seasons of The Diplomat? What do you think of season two?

THE DIPLOMAT – SEASON 2 (2024): New Trailer From Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney, David Gyasi…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The Diplomat Season 2 (2024).

The first look at what is coming for season two of Netflix’s highly praised political drama/comedy/thriller, The Diplomat just landed.

Keri Russell returns as Kate Wyler, a career diplomat who finds herself in a high-profile job for which she’s ill-suited. A placement that has repercussions for both her marriage and political future.

Well, my Thursday is officially made because my favourite show of 2023 just released an exciting new teaser trailer. There’s also the sight of Allison Janney, a great addition to the cast.

I’m ready to see Janney bring her special magic to a show already bursting at the seams with high-calibre acting talent. And yes, I yelped with joy, more than once when I realised the lady turning around was her.

Have you already seen season one? Treat yourself if you haven’t yet, and be glad you’ll only have to wait less than two months for the new season.

Anyone else get the hint that Janney and Russells characters aren’t going to be the best of friends?

Created by Debora Cahn; Rufus Sewell, David Gyasia, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, Ato Essandoh, Pearl Mackie, Jess Chanliau and Tim Delap also star.

THE DIPLOMAT (2023): The Things I Liked…

Spending the last few days watching Netflix’s new eight-episode political drama/thriller, The Diplomathas enlightened me to a few thingsFirstly, as late as I am, I’m officially a new Keri Russell fan. She’s excellent as Kate Wyler, a career diplomat with plenty to juggle while in a high-profile role as ambassador to the United Kingdom. A job for which she’s admittedly ill-suited.

As someone who’d never given much thought to the question ‘What is it that diplomats do?’, watching creator Debora Cahn’s dramatisation of how high-stakes things can sometimes get for those in the role was a very entertaining eye-opener and welcomed education.

In addition to the faultless performances, I appreciate the musical score, the clever story edit and the pacing that builds until a brilliant crescendo. The kind I found satisfying in its execution, yet challenging to come to terms with. The latter, only because I’ll have to wait at least a year before learning how things faired for the characters in question.

I would love for season two to pick up exactly where season one ended, amid all the chaotic activity. If you’ve already watched season one, I bet you can picture how great that would be.

Watch The Diplomat if you’re curious. And certainly for all the great reasons above, plus one more – the sense of humour.

Key additional cast includes, Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh, Rory Kinnear, Jess Chanliau, Pearl Mackie, Celia Imrie, Georgie Henley, Nana Mensah, Miguel Sandoval and Michael McKean.

Daddy?

Assuming I heard that correctly, this should be interesting. Whether it will be nightmare inducing or not, my guess is no but I’m open to finding out and seeing how far I get after hitting play.
