HORSE GIRL (2020): The Things I Liked…

Horse Girl (2020), Alison Brie, Netflix
Horse Girl (2020), Alison Brie, Netflix

Knowing at the start that Horse Girl is the story of a single woman losing her grip on reality, as soon as I saw and heard Allision Brie’s sweet and innocent looking character Sarah, one thing became clear right way. ‘Comfortable’ definitely isn’t the word to best describe the viewing experience of director Jeff Baena’s latest drama.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t make time for Baena’s film. For Horse Girl is an intimate and certainly notable depiction of the unfairness and tragedy of mental illness close up.

Watching Horse Girl means finding yourself at the centre of very awkward situations, as experienced by its vulnerable protagonist. Yet it’s worth it for Brie’s memorable performance. As uncomfortable as I found myself watching Sarah’s life unfold, I knew it was’t anything compared to the experience of those who love her.

My overall favourite thing about Horse Girl is of course Brie’s performance. Another highlight is the smart editing and the humour at Sarah’s impromptu birthday party of four. A memorable mini festival of harmless discomfort that will put several smiles on your face.

As for the ending… it’s not my favourite part and I have a question or two. Nonetheless, watch Horse Girl if you’re curious – but especially because Brie is great.

Imagine being socially awkward, fond of arts and crafts, horses, and supernatural crime shows. Then your increasingly lucid dreams start trickling into your waking life.

This is the premise of Horse Girl, a new Jeff Baena directed drama starring Alison Brie, Molly Shannon, John Ortiz, Robin Tunney…

Going mad must be one of the loneliest experiences. I simply want to know what’s really going on with Sarah; especially since it looks like a promising Brie performance.

Is it just me or does the high necked outfit in the above trailer thumbnail remind anyone else of a straight jacket?

Matthew Gray Gubler, Debby Ryan, Paul Reiser, Dylan Gelula, Meredith Hagner, Toby Huss, Angela Trimbur, David Paymer, John Reynolds, Jay Duplass and Dendrie Taylor also star.

Horse Girl Release Dates: January 27th, 2020 (US) / Netflix…

SEXTUPLETS (2019): New Trailer From marlon Wayans, Molly Shannon, Bresha Webb, Glynn Turman…

Sextuplets (2019), Marlon Wayans, Netflix

Sextuplets is a new comedy starring Marlon Wayans as Alan, a father- to-be who learns that he has five other siblings he’s never met. Alan decides that his baby arrives, he’s going to track down all his siblings.

Additional key cast includes Molly Shannon, Bresha Webb, Glynn Turman…

A day is going to come when I’m in the mood for some silliness. And when that day comes, I’ll hit play on this very movie and hope for the best.

I wonder how Sextuplets will hold up when compared to Eddie Murphy’s The Nutty Professor (1996)? A movie where Murphy played several characters of his onscreen family, Just like Wayans is doing here.

For a second I actually thought that the ‘stripper sister’ may have been Tiffany Haddish in a fat suit but, but no.

Debbi Morgan, Michael Ian Black, Robert Pralgo, Damon Vance, Jwaundace Candece, Scott Hunter, Patti Schellhaas, Ruben Vidal and LeBron Daniel also star.

Sextuplets Release Dates: August 16th, 2019 (US)…

Wild Nights With Emily (2018), Molly Shannon, Greenwich Entertainment

Molly Shannon, Susan Ziegler and Amy Seimetz are the stars of Wild Nights With Emily, the story of celebrated American poet Emily Dickinson’s life.

From writer / director Madeleine Olnek, this historical comedy is informed by Dickinson’s private letters and focuses particularly on her relationship with a woman…

Molly Shannon is the main reason I want to see this. She’s such a wonderful comic actress and I’ll probably always remember her for her role in Will Grace as the crazy neighbour whose arms never moved back and fourth when she walked.

Brett Gelman, Jackie Monahan, Kevin Seal, Dana Melanie, Joel Michaely, Sasha Frolova and Lisa Haas also star.

Wild Nights With Emily Release Dates: April 12th, 2019 (US)…

THE LAYOVER (2017): It’s, Erm…

The Layover (2017), Alexandra Daddario, Matt Barr, Kate Upton
The Layover (2017), Alexandra Daddario, Matt Barr, Kate Upton

In The Layover, two best friends played by Kate Upton and Alexandra Daddario end up competing for the affections of a man they meet on a road trip. Personally speaking, I immediately had issues with the film’s premise because I myself would never, ever… However, I did – just in time remember that the movie wasn’t about me and my ‘would never evers,’ so I carried on watching.

I’m not going to lie, I expected more than what I got; a truth that’s of course my own fault. Reason being, I’d seen the trailer and I made the mistake of assuming that William H. Macy, an actor who’s been in a number of my favourite movies – Magnolia (1999) to name just one, and often played very interesting complex characters was going to direct a movie with similar qualities. I unfortunately would not call The Layover complex. As for interesting, that depends on what you’re into.

Those who really ‘like’ Upton and Daddario are the ones likely to enjoy this film. I smiled at certain points but definitely didn’t laugh much. I’ve only ever seen Upton in one movie, The Other Woman (2014), a film in which she plays a relatively sweet and innocent twenty something year old. Perhaps it’s partly because of that memory of Upton’s sweet character in that film that I found it odd-sounding and challenging to buy the expletives that were flying out of her character’s mouth in Macy’s movie.

The avid movie watcher will likely guess how the story will end before they even start watching. There’s an overall forced feeling about this film, particularly in regards to the emotional and romantic moments. Don’t make my mistake and tune in with expectations based on Macy’s previous acting work. Big fans of Upton and Daddario… enjoy, I guess?

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The Layover (2017)

The Layover is a new comedy starring Alexandra Daddario, Kate Upton and William H. Macy. With Macy also directing, the story centres around two friends who go on a road trip and end up fighting over a handsome guy they meet…

I’m tuning into this one because I’m open to a few seemingly cheap laughs. Who knows, maybe there’ll be more to this movie than I ever imagined.

I think I’ll be OK if there isn’t because I’m curious about Mr. Macy as a director. He’s an actor I’ll always appreciate thanks to Magnolia (1999), one of my absolute favourites.

The Layover Release Dates: August 3rd, 2017 (US)…
