From writer / director Tamara Jenkins, Private Life a new drama about a woman whose relationship with her husband  is put on edge as she goes through multiple fertility treatments to get pregnant.

Kathryn Hahn, Paul Giamatti, Molly Shannon and Siobhan Fallon Hogan star…

I’m into this because it looks good and the cast is great. As a fan of some of Hahn’s comedy work, I’m also looking forward to seeing her do what looks like a great job in this dramatic role.

In I Think We’re Alone Now, the apocalypse turns out to be a blessing in disguise for one lucky recluse. That is until a second survivor arrives with the threat of companionship.

Directed by Reed Morano, Elle Fanning, Peter Dinklage, Paul Giamatti and Charlotte Gainsbourg star…

I want to see how well the film works with such a small cast. I’m hoping it’s an adequately engaging story and that the on-screen chemistry is great between Dinklage and Fanning.

THE CATCHER WAS A SPY (2018): New Trailer From Paul Rudd, Mark Strong, Paul Giamatti, Sienna Miller…

The Catcher Was A Spy (2018), Paul Rudd

The Catcher Was A Spy is the story of a man in the midst of a double life; working both as a major league baseball player and a spy…

Directed by Ben Lewin; Paul Rudd, Connie Nielsen, Mark Strong and Sienna Miller star…

I don’t know about you, but I haven’t yet encountered a serious, non-comedic Paul Rudd movie that has me excited enough to see it; so deep is my appreciation of his comedic work. Unlike Steve Carell and a few other actors known first for comedy, I’m just finding it hard to make the shift from a funny Rudd to a serious Rudd. I think it’s going to take a film I simply can’t ignore for me to transition. Will The Catcher Was A Spy be that movie? I’m not quite sure yet but I wish.

Guy Pearce, Connie Nielsen, Jeff Daniels, Hiroyuki Sanada and Shea Whigham also star

The Catcher Was A Spy Release Dates: June 22nd, 2018 (US)…

MORGAN (2016): New Trailer From Paul Giamatti, Kate Mara, Jennifer Jason Leigh…

Anya Taylor Joy (Morgan)
Anya Taylor Joy (Morgan)

Starring Kate Mara, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Paul Giamatti and Boyd Holbrook, Morgan is the story of an artificial being whose continued existence is to be decided by a corporate risk-management consultant…

I’m a fan of Alex Galand’s Ex Machina (2015) and as I watched the above trailer, it occurred to me that this movie may just be the closest that Ex Machina fans will ever get to a sequel. Not ideal but I’ll take it.

Morgan Release Dates: September 2nd, 2016 (US & UK); September 21st, 2016 (FR); November 24th, 2016 (GER)…

Directed by Luke Scott; Michael Yare, Anya Taylor Joy and Boyd Holbrook also star.

The Phenom (2016), Ethan Hawke

Starring Ethan Hawke, Paul Giamatti and Johnny Simmons, The Phenom tells the story of the relationship between a major League rookie pitcher, his new sports psychologist and an overbearing father (Hawke)…

I really want this movie to be great and I think I’ll like it. But if for some reason it isn’t and I don’t, I’d like to take a moment to say… ‘Well done trailer maker!’

SAN ANDREAS (2015): For The Visual Effects and…

San Andreas (2015), Carla Gugino, Dwayne Johnson
San Andreas (2015), Carla Gugino, Dwayne Johnson

Directed by Brad Peyton; Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, and Paul Giamatti are the stars of San Andreas – that California earthquake movie you may have heard about over the summer.

You may also have heard that the visual effects are breathtaking and they are. However, the thing I enjoyed most is actually the unique father daughter relationship. San Andreas isn’t a bad movie, there’s just nothing that feels particularly new about it, therefore making it feel not quite as epic as I’d hoped.

Some random things came to mind as I watched:

  • On account of all the dust, running, falling and screaming, how much fun was being an extra on this movie, really?
  • I honestly don’t recall the last time I saw such excellent mother/ daughter casting.
  • You’d have to be blind not to notice Alexandra Daddario’s eyeballs. If you’ve seen the film, I know you noticed!
  • I better be careful because I don’t know anyone that would come and rescue me at a time when the traditional emergency services cannot. But then again… you never know. Just don’t rely on it, of course. But still, you never know…

If by this point you’re still curious, watch it for the impressive visual effects and all else that appeals.

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON (2015): Great Music & Timely Social Commentary

Straight Outta Compton (2015), N.W.A.
Straight Outta Compton (2015), N.W.A.

The red band trailer for F. Gary Gray’s biography of rap group N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton (2015) has landed.

Focused on the emergence of the group (ranked number 83 by Rolling Stone, on their list of the ‘100 Greatest Artists of All Time.’), fans of N.W.A’s music will be very happy indeed if the highly anticipated trailer is anything to go by.

Thankfully, due to involvement from founding members, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, original N.W.A music will be featured and performed.

As someone ever curious about routes to success / greatness, in any field and in the face of adversity, I’m ready for this film right now.

Happy Straight Outta Compton 🙂
