What Women Want (2000), the Nancy Meyers directed comedy starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt is definitely a movie I remember enjoying. I only wish that I could say the same about the movie’s recent remake, What Men Want.

Starring Taraji P. Henson, Max Greenfield and Tracy Morgan, the plot of both movies is centred around an executive who wakes up at the hospital after an accident, and is suddenly able to hear the thoughts of the opposite sex. This is clearly a predicament that lends itself well to comedy. It’s just that there are very few laughs to be had in director Adam Shankman’s movie.

The biggest issue with Shankman’s film is the disappointing script. I found that the clichéd and seemingly lazy plot choices worked to make continuing to watch What Men Want into a tedious and humourless endeavour. Furthermore, there are a number of decisions made by Traraji P. Henson’s character that I just didn’t buy as something she would do or allow to happen… drunk and upset or not.

Where acting skills are concerned, I’m quite sure that What Men Want really isn’t close to the best we’ve seen from Henson. I wish very much that I could pinpoint a favourite dramatic / humorous moment. Unfortunately, all that really comes to mind as favourites are the black and white hounds tooth jacket and the movie’s sunny location.

If you’re very curious, sure, take a chance and give Shankman’s movie a go. Otherwise you’re highly likely better off watching What Women Want (2000). I said it.

THE EQUALIZER 2 (2018): The Things I Liked…

In The Equaliser 2, Denzel Washington’s Robert McCall is, as aways more than ready to serve up an unflinching justice in the name of the exploited and oppressed. Since in director Antoine Fuqua’s sequel, one of the oppressed happens to be someone McCall loves dearly, he wastes no time in setting up a series of smart manoeuvres that prove arguably as thrilling and unexpected as in the first movie, The Equalizer (2014).

With a well-chosen supporting cast that includes Ashton Sanders (Moonlight 2016), Pedro Pascal and Melissa Leo, I particularly enjoyed the dynamic and chemistry between Denzel and Pascal’s characters. My favourite of the most thrilling moments involves the ‘panic room’ scene. A scene that was almost too intense and suspenseful for my little thriller loving heart to bear.

What unfortunately ensures that The Equaliser 2 is not quite as memorable as the first movie includes the fact that it’s a sequel and therefore has the element of familiarity strongly fighting against it. The other reason for me personally is how the beginning portion of the film felt a little disconnected from the rest of it. 

Overall, I say there’s still enough good stuff going on to make The Equaliser 2 a worthy movie. You will certainly be thrilled, moved and possibly find yourself feeling lucky and grateful, especially for all the good, helpful people you’re knowingly and unknowingly connected to.

Watch it if you’re so curious.

COLONIA (2015): For The Tension & Suspense

The cult setting of Colonia, the latest movie starring Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl is one of the things that drew me to the film. It’s probably wise to add that my interest is much like the way that most people are curious about the mind of a serial killer, and definitely less like ‘let me join a sect and see’

Well paced and acted, my favourite things about director Florian Gallenberger’s movie are the tension and suspense which builds up nicely till the very end. Another highlight is the information about the dynamics of power and the madness that often takes place within the walls of cults such as Colonia Dignidad.

As you watch this movie, you may experience feelings of gratitude. First because, you’re not trapped inside a cult and second, you’ve never had to join one that may be impossible to escape, so as to try and save your risk taking, ‘act now, think later’ could be smarter boyfriend.

I’m glad that I can finally say I’ve seen Emma Watson in a film I like; a film other than Seth Rogen’s This Is The End (2013), which I love. In case you were wondering, ‘what about Harry Potter?’ Yeah, I’m not into those films, at all.

Watch it because it’s gripping.
