SING (2016): The Thing I Liked…

Besides the fun clips in the trailer, I found Sing to be, unfortunately, mostly forgettable. The story centres around the numerous characters involved in a singing competition; the success of which will give the organiser a chance to save his failing theatre.

I was moved and amused in parts, but I still didn’t thoroughly enjoy Sing because I didn’t find the story and most of the characters, especially, entertaining or interesting. I’m sure that how stereotypical most of them are has something to do with it.

Furthermore, I’m the person who usually doesn’t enjoy watching televised singing competitions. Yet, I wanted to see this because the trailer looked great. Admittedly, there’s also a part of me that didn’t buy into McConaughey’s voice and or his performance as the Koala.

The main highlight about Sing, for me, has nothing to do with the music. I loved the mommy piggy (Reese Witherspoon) and her ingenuity when no one else was available to take care of her piglets. I also adore her performance partner, another cute piggy. You know, the one in the red sequinned leotard and gold sequinned sweatsuit that you fell in love with, in the trailers.

You’ll very likely have a better time watching Sing if you enjoy singing competitions. If you’re not that person, I hope you like it anyway, should you decide to tune in.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Sing (2016).

Taron Egerton, Scarlett Johansson and Matthew McConaughey have a new movie from the team that brought us the Minions (2015). It’s called Sing , and the characters are cute singing/dancing animals.

I’m generally not big on musicals but I’ll show up for the comedy and cuteness.

Seth MacFarlane, John C. Reilly, Reese Witherspoon, Leslie Jones, Nick Offerman and Jennifer Saunders also star.

WILD (2014): Because Travel Is Good For The Soul

Wild (2014), Reese Witherspoon
Wild (2014), Reese Witherspoon

Can you imagine taking on a 1000+ mile journey on foot to help you recover from a personal catastrophe at home? That’s exactly what Reese Witherspoon does as Cheryl, in Wild; the Jean-Marc Vallée-directed drama based on the real-life memoir of Cheryl Strayed.

This great story of redemption and self-discovery is definitely Witherspoon’s least glamorous role yet (not a criticism). With foot blisters, foregone showers and tension-filled encounters with sketchy strangers along the way, Wild is a humorous, perfectly paced and edited film. you’ll find yourself dreaming about your own personal adventure.

Seeing myself travelling to escape undesirable events that may have happened at home is easy. However, my journey absolutely won’t be on foot and it certainly will not involve a tent or my very own portable stove. No way!

Watch  Wild for a hopeful, very engaging film experience, and because it’s good for you.

Key highlights include Cheryl’s first encounter as a hitchhiker and her meeting with the little boy.

THE GOOD LIE (2014): Such A Beautiful Ending!

Set in Sudan and the United States, director Philippe Falardeau’s The Good Lie follows the journey of Sudanese refugees given the chance to resettle in America, away from civil war in their home country.

Carrie (Reese Witherspoon), a feisty, strong and fiercely independent employment agency counsellor is one of the first people they meet when they arrive in the US, and you’ll be glad they did.

This is a beautiful, dramatic and humorous tale about friendship, survival, sacrifice, and family. There’s a chance that The Good Lie will have you reflecting upon the true value of unexpected kindness from perfect strangers.

Watch it because it’s good.
