THE WITCHES (2020), The Things I Liked…

Director Robert Zemeckis’s remake of Roald Dahl’s adventure/comedy classic The Witches promised a scary, funny and imaginative tale. One about a seven-year-old boy who has a run-in with some real-life witches.

Instead, ‘OK’ is the best I can say about the film. Anne Hathaway’s performance as the main witch wasn’t bad and I liked some of the special effects. Nevertheless, there’s a certain simplicity in the story execution that left me uninspired and dissatisfied.

In fairness, The Witches is based on a famous children’s book. So, naturally, I wasn’t expecting a sophisticated adult tale. Yet, I still hoped to feel more pleased to have watched it than I did.

Luckily, I managed to find parts of the movie that stood out to me in a good way. For example, the above perfectly infectious smile on Anne Hathaway’s face, Chris Rock’s fun voice/narration, the ‘comforted’ feeling I experienced once Octavia Spencer’s loving grandma character showed up. I also enjoyed the musical score and the wonderfully suspenseful scene that involves the task of getting the potion into the pea soup. A moment that took me right back to my favourite Disney Pixar movie, Ratatouille (2007). Lastly, there’s the very pleasantly dramatic dining scene that follows the pea soup ‘flavouring’ incident.

Overall, it’s ultimately the relationship between grandma and grandson that I loved most about The Witches. It’s just a shame that I didn’t find the film as a whole to be as satisfying as my favourite scenes in it.

Give The Witches a chance if you’re especially curious. Undoubtedly, it’s young children who will enjoy it most.

FLIGHT (2012): For Denzel Washington’s Great Performance & That Excellent Ending…

Flight (2012), Denzel Washington
Flight (2012), Denzel Washington

From the acclaimed director of Forrest Gump (1994) and the much loved Back To The Future movies, Robert Zemeckis, I knew that Flight would be worth my time and not just because it came highly recommended by a fellow film lover. The films’s star is Denzel Washington – another great reason to watch, as is an interest in the story of a skilled airplane pilot whose personal demons lead him to both endanger and save the lives of his passengers

A well written and told story, one of my favourite highlights is the ‘courtroom’ scene towards the end. I knew it was coming and I couldn’t wait. The dialogue and general back and forth with Denzel’s character and the person (s) questioning him proved worth the wait.  Overall though, my absolute favourite moment in Flight has to be the actual ending. That last scene says so very much in just a few simple words. If you haven’t already, I say watch it for the Denzel magic and  much more.

ALLIED (2016): New Trailer Starring Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard

Allied (2016), Brad Pitt
Allied (2016), Brad Pitt

Wonderful French actress Marion Cotillard and Brad Pitt have a new movie. Set in 1942 during the second world war and directed by Robert Zemeckis, at the centre of Allied is the relationship between Marianne Beausejour, a French Resistance Fighter (Cotillard) and Intelligence Officer Max Vatan (Pitt)…

Looks like Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2007) on a higher level and maybe even more badass.

Lizzy Caplan, Matthew Goode, Raffey Cassidy and Charlotte Hope also star.

Allied Release Dates: November 20th, 2016 (US); November 25th, 2016 (UK)…

THE WALK (2015): New Trailer In Which Joseph Gordon-Levitt Is Philippe Petitte…

THE WALK (2015), Joseph Gordon-Levitt

The trailer is out for The Walk, the new Robert Zemeckis directed film based on French High-Wire artist Philippe Petit.

The international cast is led by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and includes Ben Kingsley,  Charlotte Le Bon, James Badge Dale, Ben Schwartz...

What appears to lie ahead is an exciting risk taking adventure. Though I’m not quite sure yet whether I’ll be able to completely suspend my disbelief when it comes to the French accent.

Still, somehow the story of a man who chooses to walk on a wire from great heights and without any safety precautions is probably interesting enough to convince me. That is of course unless I opt for the 2008 documentary, Man on Wire instead.
