DEADPOOL (2016): For The Cool Action, Refreshing Dialogue…

I’ve loved Deadpool’s star, Ryan Reynolds’s sense of humour and comic timing ever since his television sitcom days in Two Guys, A Girl & A Pizza Place (1998-2001). Fast forward to me watching the first Deadpool trailer in 2015, and there I was with reason to be excited.

Generally speaking, my enthusiasm for the superhero genre has been decreasing steadily in recent years. In other words, for me to get excited about another new superhero franchise, it’d better be refreshingly different somehow.

Besides the movie’s much-spoken-about uncensored expletives, repeated breaking of the ‘fourth wall’ and the humorous dialogue, there isn’t really much else about Deadpool that’s particularly new when compared to the average superhero movie. Not to say that I didn’t have a good time, mind you – because those cool action sequences were a highlight. Overall, I found director Tim Miller’s movie adequately entertaining.

One thing I did find impossible not to notice as I watched Deadpool is the general attractiveness of the cast. Especially the three main characters played by Reynolds, Morena Baccarin and Ed Skrein (Ajax). Considering the fact that Reynolds spends a good amount of the movie’s running time in prosthetics that aren’t particularly easy on the eyes, perhaps pressure was felt by the filmmakers to redress the balance. Maybe, indeed.

Did anyone else notice how much Ed Skein resembles a rather beefed-up version of Nicholas Hoult?

Deadpool is a fun ride. Watch it for the humour, action, etc.

HELL & BACK (2015): The Good Things…

Set in hell, Mila Kunis, Susan Sarandon, T.J. Miller and Danny McBride make up some of the cast of stop-motion animation adult comedy, Hell & Back.

I definitely smiled more than I laughed as I watched Hell & Back, which I think makes it a mildly entertaining to quite entertaining movie. This of course isn’t the ideal reaction, but I remain glad I made it to the end.

Directed by Tom Gianas and Ross Shuman, I enjoyed the voice work moments of funny dialogue. For example, words spoken by the character responsible for welcoming residents to Hell and administering torture.

Augie, the one that ‘looks like he only eats dough’ is cute in a perfectly adorably and cuddly way. There’s also a great joke about cat owners that I won’t spoil. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, the devil, played by Bob Odenkirk is definitely my favourite character, thanks to his voice, his dialogue and his physicality when sporting his red ‘suit.’

Watch Hell & Back for a non-demanding stop-motion comedy, especially if you don’t mind plenty of expletives and adult dialogue.

So,  this looks wonderfully nuts.

The Tom Gianas and Ross Shuman directed fun fest is out October 2015.

The cast includes comedy favourites Danny McBride, Michael Pena, Mila Kunis, Susan Sarandon, T.J. Miller and Jennifer Coolidge.

I for one cannot wait. Fingers crossed that the end result will prove worthwhile.

Naturally, after a good trailer trailer comes an even better trailer.

It’s about time Ryan Reynolds caught a real break. Looks like I’ll be  able to add Deadpool to my list of favourite Reynolds comedy films.

So far, that list consists of The Voices (2014) and sitcom Two Guys, A Girl & A Pizza Place.

Directed by Tim Miller, the rest of the Deadpool supporting cast includes Gina Carano, brianna Hildbrand, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Morena Baccarin and Rachel Sheen, to name jus a few.

Film and comic book fans have been going crazy over the recent Deadpool trailer trailer. And no. That’s not a typo. The makers of the film have indeed released an actual trailer, for the trailer.

If like myself you’re a non-reader of comic books or just unfamiliar with the Deadpool story, but want to make sense of what you’ve just seen, below is what wikipedia had to say about this Marvel Comics/X-Force/X-Men Origins character:

‘Deadpool is a disfigured and mentally unstable mercenary with the superhuman ability of an accelerated healing factor. He is known as the “Merc with a Mouth” because of his talkative nature and tendency to break the fourth wall, which is used by writers to humorous effect.’

Based on what I’ve watched of the films star, Ryan Reynolds, I think he’s been cast well in this role, thanks to his fully proven comic abilities.
