Ever wanted to be selected to test a new home device? A digital assistant (DA), perhaps? If your answer is yes, meet AIA, a DA that will learn your family’s behaviours and start to anticipate your needs; also making sure that nothing and no one gets in her (I mean your) family’s way.

From writer/director Chris Weitz; Afraid is a new horror/mystery/sci-fi starring John Cho, Keith Carradine, Katherine Waterston and David Dastmalchian.

I’m yet to see M3gan (2023) but something tells me that this story is scarier because it feels even closer to what is currently possible.

What I know for sure is, I agree with one of the reactions in the YouTube comment section for this trailer. ‘What? Think of me like another mom?‘ ‘Put that interloper back in the box!

I’m unsurprisingly curious about the people behind AIA and how they will be represented in this story. Did AIA get hacked or was she always designed to be a nefarious entity?

Lastly, I wonder how many more AI cautionary tale movies will be made. I’m sure the answer is ‘Yes’.

Riki Lindhome, Havana Rose Liu, Isaac Bae, Lukita Maxwell, Greg Hill, Ben Youcef, River Drosche, Ashley Romans, Wyatt Lindner and Katie McCabe also star.

Afraid Release Dates: August 30th, 2024 (US & UK)…

Happy Film Loving,

G

  1. The increasing trend of movies with AI as the main villain concerns me a bit because misinformation, fake news, and lack of critical thinking is planting seeds of distrust among the general public towards AI.

AI has great potential and it’s just a question of time when not if it will take over most of our lives. We are still far away from the general AI having capabilities as shown in the movies, but until then we will have to learn to use it as a tool to stay competitive in at workplace and also to make our lives easier. The ethical concerns are important as well as built-in fail-safe into every single device using AI, which starts with the company behind it to not let things get out of hand, because movie scenarios, however unlikely, in some cases can happen if left unchecked.

In a similar way, movies like Jaws took extreme shark attacks and scared people to go to the beach and into the water. It’s great entertainment, but it can also have long-lasting damaging effects and 2nd hand trauma for many people.

To be clear, as a subgenre of horror, is fine, but there should be a balance between stories about AI that is helpful and ambivalent. So far majority paints AI in a negative light and something to be feared. In the past, this was not that big deal since we could rely on news media to keep us informed, but now too many people watch movies like they are based on hard facts.

I will admit I might be a bit tired of the horror genre in general as I’m getting older and the real world became scary enough. 😅

    1. I agree that a balance is required. However, it’ll be tricky to stop the studios from releasing horror-leaning AI stories if they keep bringing in the money.
Especially with how popular horror seems to have become in general.

I’m also on the same page about real life being frightening enough. Hence my gravitation towards films that amuse me, rather than those that are dark, scare me and result in nightmares.

      1. Haha, same here. I’d have to do some research. Maybe a good idea for one of my future blogs. 😉

  2. I saw Meghan (sp?) and it wasn’t very well done. This looks like it might be. I see those “eyes” start out a pleasant lilac, but later in the trailer they are red. It plays to many fears people have about AI — and rightfully so! I’ve seen several “touchy feely” movies about it that encourage people to consider accepting them, but HELL NO. We already have a taste of it with Alexa and her type. The power companies here are really pushing “smart thermostats” but I learned they are listening devices also. I was at an afternoon Christmas party cookie exchange and we were all talking and laughing — until “the thermostat” piped up with her own contribution to the conversation!
