I, TONYA (2017): Good, Notable Performances…

I, Tonya (2017), Margot Robbie
I, Tonya (2017), Margot Robbie

I, Tonya, the true story of competitive ice skater Tonya Harding, and the unfortunate events that led to the end of her career is a movie well done. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film is structured and captured in a way that’s engaging both in style and content.

I found myself impressed by all the performances. Robbie’s portrayal is memorable because of what she was able to achieve both physically and emotionally. There’s even been talk of how impressive her solo scene in front of the mirror is, and it really is. But the moment that moved me most happened in the courtroom, immediately following sentencing.

As Harding’s abusive mother, Allison Janney did brilliantly. This of course, didn’t surprise me, because Janney always delivers. Always. The hateful truth of her character was conveyed so perfectly in her entire being, and very clearly through her eyes.

Until this movie, I hadn’t really seen Sebastian Stan in much, except his work in Marvel’s Captain America and Avengers movies. Because of what he did with his role as Harding’s abusive husband, I’m now more interested than ever before in what he does next. Another highlight in Gillespie’s film is the well-chosen music.

Watch I, Tonya for the performances and the story. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to Robbie’s next leading role in a drama.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of I, Tonya (2017).

I, Tonya is the true story of competitive ice skater Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie), a skater who rose amongst the ranks at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. However, unfortunately for her, things change drastically when her ex-husband intervenes.

Directed by Craig Gillespie; Bobby Cannavale, Sebastian Stan and Mckenna Grace also star.

I’m watching because it looks like this movie really allowed Robbie to act her socks off, and I personally can’t wait to see how that unfolds.

I’m also curious about the scary truth of what happened.

Additional supporting cast includes Joey Thurmond, Bojana Novakovic, Allison Janney and Julianne Nicholson.

I, Tonya Release Dates: December 8th, 2017, (US); February 16th, 2018 (UK)…

TALLULAH (2016): Good Story, Well Acted…

Tallulah (2016), Ellen Page
Tallulah (2016), Ellen Page

I tuned into Tallulah because of the near enough justifiable madness I saw in the trailer; a person taking a stranger’s baby because said stranger is without a doubt an unfit mother.

Starring Ellen Page, Allison Janney, Tammy Blanchard  and written/ directed by Sian Heder, Tallulah has a thing or two to say about the sacrifice that is motherhood. Especially via Blanchard’s unfit mother/dissatisfied Beverly Hills housewife character.

Well-edited and acted, it’s worth watching for the story . But, also, for the chance to have all the evidence so you can think about how close you’d have come to ‘taking the baby’, calling child protective services, doing nothing, or something else entirely, had you been in Page’s character’s position. Ponder on that dear friends!

MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN (2016) Movie Review: Good Story, Fun Special Effects…

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children (2016), Asa Butterfield
Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children (2016), Asa Butterfield

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is enjoyable and well-acted. Eva Green’s talents, and a bunch of children with abilities different to what I’ve already seen in plenty of superhero movies, were what appealed the most.

I also loved watching Chris O’Dowd in a ‘struggling father’ role – a highlight because he did a good job. The story is well-constructed, and with Tim Burton, plus his rich imagination in the director’s chair, it’s unsurprising that the visual manifestations of writer Ransom Riggs’s characters are another highlight.

Contrary to my initial thoughts after watching the trailer, Miss Peregrine’s peculiar children are not quite superheroes in the traditional sense. Reason being, their main concern is saving their own particular kind rather than humanity as a whole (not a criticism, just something I realised).

There is a moment in the movie where I thought, ‘really? you went with that take?’ It was during Asa Butterfields’s character’s anguish at his grandfather’s demise. It’s not so much that there were no tears in sight since I know that not everyone cries in such predicaments. It’s that his supposed anguish didn’t ring particularly true for me. Something about the rhythm, maybe.

Though not exactly perfect, I say watch Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children for the story, fun adventure, special effects and refreshing difference when compared to the ‘peculiarities’ of todays well-known superhero movie characters.

TALLULAH (2016): New Trailer From Ellen Page, Allison Janney & Tammy Blanchard…

Talulah, a Netflix original film starring Ellen Page, Tammy Blanchard and Allison Janney is about a dissatisfied Beverly Hills housewife/negligent mother. One who hires a troubled stranger to babysit her toddler.

Written/directed by Sian Heder, the story appeals. However, I’m most looking forward to the performances by Blanchard, Page, Janney and  Uzo Aduba.

Also featuring Zachary Quinto, may the execution surprise and delight.

Tallulah Release Dates: July 29th, 2016, Netflix (US)
