THE GOLDFINCH (2019): The Things I Liked…

The Goldfinch (2019), Ansel Elgort, Warner Bros. Pictures

The Goldfinch is a movie for which I had high hopes post trailer viewing. The primary reason is the reliable cast and intriguing themes.

Starring Ansel Elgort, Luke Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Finn Wolfhard and Sarah Paulson; director John Crowley’s film is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Donna Tartt. A story that follows Theodore Decker, a young boy who loses his mother in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. An event that leads to him being taken in by a wealthy Upper East Side, New York family. And from there we get to see the highs and lows of young Theodore’s life as he grows up.

Not particularly’ is unfortunately the answer to the question of whether I enjoyed watching The Goldfinch. The only sort of good news is that I didn’t hate the performances. Yet, I can’t deny that the movie left me disappointed.

Part of the problem is the two-and-a-half hour-long runtime which felt excessive. Second, young Oakes Fegley is a talented performer. However, it proved distracting to me, how little he resembled Ansel Elgort, especially since he’s supposed to play the younger version of Elgort’s character.

The Goldfinch isn’t focused on grief the way I expected. Yet, I’m not mad at that. My issue is more that whatever the film had to say, it could have been better-executed story edit/structure-wise. The lack of satisfaction and the emptiness I felt during much of, and by the end of the movie took me back to that feeling of leaving a dinner party you’d been looking forward to with a largely empty stomach.

Okay, there were one or two highlights, Young Decker’s relationship with Jeffrey Wright’s character and the tiny little crush I may have had on Aneurin Barnard’s character. Overall, I’m sure it’s unsurprising that I’m having trouble thinking of reasons to suggest you give The Goldfinch a chance. However, Tartt’s book is a Pulitzer Prize winner. So maybe read it if you haven’t already.

WEST SIDE STORY (2021): New Trailer From Steven Spielberg, Starring Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose…

Starring Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose; Steven Spielberg brings us an adaptation of 1957’s West Side Story. A musical that explores forbidden love and the rivalry between two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds.

Just as I’d started to think that these days, Lin-Manuel Miranda is the only big name attached to hit musical movies; Steven Spielberg brings us a remake of West Side Story, the 1967 Oscar winning musical.

I watched the older movie in high school and I don’t recall disliking it as much as I do most musicals. For that reason and general curiosity, I’ll be watching this one. I also just love all the bright colours in this trailer.

David Alvarez, Rita Moreno, Mike Faist, Curtiss Cook, Brian d’Arcy James, Corey Stoll, Ezra Menas, Ben Cook, Sean Harrison Jones, Patrick Higgins, Paloma Garcia Lee and Maddie Ziegler also star.

West Side Story Release Dates: December 10th, 2021 (US & UK)…

JONATHAN (2018): New Trailer From Ansel Elgort, Patricia Clarkson, Matt Bomer, Suki Waterhouse…

Ansel Elgort, Patricia Clarkson, Matt Bomer and Suki Waterhouse are the stars of new drama / sci-fi Jonathan.

Directed by Bill Oliver, the story follows Jonathan who leaves the office everyday at noon. He gets home and goes to sleep. Each morning when Jonathan wakes up, there’s a breakfast prepared for him along with a video telling him about the second part of his day…

I rather enjoyed the mysterious nature of the above synopsis. Upon seeing the trailer, I’m definitely quite intrigued and find myself thinking of cloning as a key theme. It could also be interesting if I were wrong – especially since I do enjoy a well executed story surprise.

Douglas Hodge, Souleymane Sy Savane, Ramses Torres and Jeff Kim also star.

Jonathan Release Dates: November 16th, 2018 (US)…

BABY DRIVER (2017): The Thing I Liked…

Baby Driver (2017), Ansel Elgort.png

Baby Driver, an Edgar Wright written / directed action movie about a young getaway driver, one who is forced to take part in a heist that’s doomed to fail isn’t a bad film. I just didn’t love it.

The film’s style is fun, the music is loud and fun, especially if you like the songs. The whole production stylistically is quite the achievement and it’s adequately entertaining. Nevertheless though, for me personally, I found it quite forgettable. This is partly because I’m not quite the key target market. I feel that there was room for the story to work better. For example, without spoiling anything, my biggest issue with Baby Driver is the main ‘change of heart’ at the end. I just didn’t buy it for the character involved.

What I liked most about Wright’s movie is the moment (s) when Elgort’s character starts to run. After all, I have always been quite partial to a good running sequence.

Baby Driver, watch it if you’re so curious.

THE DIVERGENT SERIES – ALLEGIANT (2016): New Trailer From Shailene Woodley & Theo James

I haven’t watched a single film in The Divergent Series. It’s likely that I won’t any time soon but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy the execution of their latest trailer for Allegiant, the last instalment…

The music (a remix of ‘Tris’ by Ellie Golding) combined with the minimal dialogue and imagery is quite the audio visual experience.

For those really into the series… The Divergent Series: Allegiant Release Date(s): March 11th, 2016 (UK); March 18th, 2016 (US)…
