Directed by Joshua Marston; the cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lakeith Stanfield, Jason Segel and Martin Sheen.
I’m in for reasons including, Ejiofor makes good choices, I want to to see the arguments from both sides, I want to know the story of a person with enough courage to risk it all.
Lastly, the subject matter is just so very interesting, isn’t it?

I don’t know that Phoenix as Jesus Christ feels like a perfect casting instinctually. However, I’m very open to be proven wrong, especially since Phoenix is quite the talent.
Also, not that this movie will be as brutal as Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ (2004) – but I kind of don’t want to sign up to witness all that violence again. It’s a tough one since I want to watch the story of Mary Magdalene. Sadly, there’s just no telling her story without Jesus, particularly because she’s with him till the very unfortunate end.
Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Ariane Labed, Ryan Corr, Tahar Rahim and Lubna Azabal also star.
I myself would never want to typecast anybody against their will, but I did find myself very glad to learn that inThe Martian, Matt Damon gets to play the role of a hero once more. Having to ‘hate him’ in Interstellar (2014) proved more challenging than expected.
Directed by the rightfully celebrated Ridley Scott, and based on Andy Weir’s best selling book of the same name, The Martianis a predominantly Mars-based adventure with a sprinkle of funny moments.
As you might imagine, similar to Interstellar (2014), there’s a fair amount of ‘science speak’ in the film. Most of itI personally will probably never understand, but you don’t need to in order to have a good time. The movie works, thanks to the story and the likability of its star.
The thing I enjoyed most about The Martian is all the scientific problem solving that Damon’s character, astronaut Mark Watney and the wider NASA team do in the effort to bring him home in one piece. I like the movie for this reason and as a story of teamwork and survival. I’ll also confess to getting quite a kick from seeing the female commander, played by Jessica Chastain take charge.
You may have heard that a few awards bodies placed The Martian in the comedy category. About that, there are a few funny quips here and there – and by ‘a few’ I don’t mean ‘a good few’ in the way that some people use the phrase to mean ‘a lot’. I do actually mean ‘a few,’ meaning no more than 5 laughs/giggles at most – which, in my mind doesn’t equal to a comedy. But, hey, trust the studios to find loopholes so that their film gets a chance at an award.
Science fans will likely enjoy this movie most, but everyone else will be pleased also, for the topic of surviving on Mars is a relevant and interesting one at this time. With that said, watch it because it’s good. Another reason would be to find out for yourself whether categorising The Martian as a comedy is at all justified. I remain unconvinced.

Secret In Their Eyes (2015), Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Chiwetel Ejiofor
Directed by Billy Ray; Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Alfred Molina are the stars of Secret in Their Eyes. A story about a group of FBI Investigators; a close-knit team for whom everything changes when they learn the identity of the victim of their new murder case.
Ray’s movie follows the events and decisions that end up leading to a surprising, yet understandable conclusion, the revelation of which is a key highlight.
Seeing evidence of the depth of the friendships between the main protagonists – before, during and after the central crime is the thing I enjoyed most about Secret in Their Eyes.
One more great moment would have been when the audience learns of the victim’s identity. But…! that little nugget was unfortunately given away for free in the trailer.
Secret In Their Eyes could have been a better movie. The cast performed well but I think they were let down by post-production, namely what felt like an awkward overuse of flashbacks and the far too revealing trailer edit. Still, watch it if you’re curious enough.
Z For Zachariah (2015), Chris Pine, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Margot Robbie
Directed by Craig Zobel, and based on a novel by Robert C. O’Brien, Z For Zachariah is a mysterious drama starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Margot Robbie and Chris Pine.
Set in the aftermath of a disaster that has eradicated most of civilisation, at the centre of the film is a love triangle between the people likely to be the last three left.
I tuned in mainly because of the talented cast – and considering the unique circumstances the characters find themselves in, I just had to know how things would turn out for all involved.
Naturally, everyone does not win, but it sure is interesting to see how the characters navigate their unique predicaments, making for engaging character studies. I was left thinking about how things can turn out when people let their insecurities get the best of them.
