GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (2014): The Things I Liked…

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel are among the stars of Guardians Of The Galaxy. A James Gunn-directed action/adventure/comedy about a group of intergalactic criminals and their attempt to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.

The main reason I wanted to see this film is that I’d really like to watch the last two Avengers movies, but I’m behind. And I’ve never been one to jump to watch a sequel before seeing the films that came before.

I’m sure that the following opinion isn’t popular, but as Gunn’s movie played, it wasn’t too long before the thought ‘I don’t think I like this.’ came to mind. As I wondered why, a number of reasons began to surface.

Reason one, it feels quite a lot like Star Trek. I’m not saying that I hate Star Trek, but I’m also not overly enthused by it either. Reason two, some of the humorous moments work, but there are a bunch of others that feel as though the script is trying too hard to be amusing, to the point where several attempts to make the audience laugh came across as forced.

Thirdly, I found that out of the four or five main sentimental moments, I only really appreciated two of them, the one on Earth and the one involving Groot. The rest just felt rather corny, for want of a better phrase.

As for the things that stood out most in a positive way, those include Zoe Saldana’s physical performance, Karen Gillian as the less favoured sibling, and of course, the visual effects that show what space actually looks like.

Knowing Guardians Of The Galaxy as a movie that many people love, I mostly see it as a reminder that fantasy is definitely not my favourite genre. Especially when most of the actors are sporting plenty of make up/prosthetics. Nevertheless, to everyone who had a great time, I’m seriously very pleased for you.

THE KID (2019): New Trailer From Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Dane DeHaan…

Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio and Dane DeHaan are the stars of The Kid.

Directed by D’Onofrio, The Kid is a biography/western about a young boy forced to go on the run while trying to save his sister from his villainous uncle. On his journey, he finds himself increasingly entwined in the lives of Sheriff Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

I’m not overly familiar with the Sheriff Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid story, but I am aware that Billy is an outlaw, and I’m interested mainly because of Hawke and Pratt. My fingers are crossed for a pleasant surprise.

Leila George, Adam Baldwin, Jenny Gabrielle and Tait Fletcher also star.

The Kid Release Dates: March 8th, 2019 (2019)…

The Lego Movie 2 – The Second Part (2019)

In The Lego Movie 2 – The Second Part, it’s just five years since everything was awesome, but now LEGO DUPLO® invaders from outer space are  wrecking everything, and so the new threat must be dealt with.

Chris Pratt, Margot Robbie and Alison Brie star while Mike Mitchell and Trisha Gum direct.

I decided that I already like this movie simply because of the title, especially ‘the second part’ of it. I’m looking forward to all the humour and silliness.

Tiffany Haddish, Jonah Hill, Elizabeth Banks, Stephanie Beatriz, Channing Tatum, Nick Offerman, Will Arnett and Charlie Day also star.

The Lego Movie 2 – The Second Part Release Dates: February 8th, 2019 (US & UK)

JURASSIC WORLD – FALLEN KINGDOM (2018): The Things I Liked…

Jurassic World - Fallen Kingdom (2018), Chris Pratt

As was the case with Jurassic World (2015), I enjoyed Chris Pratt’s brand of charm in this J.A. Bayona-directed sequel Jurassic World – Fallen Kingdom. Yet, surprisingly, even more than that, I really liked the screen time dedicated to the dinosaurs. In particular the way Bayona’s movie not only told us about the intelligence of the dinosaurs, but we got to see a well-executed display of said intelligence.

Another key highlight is the final and unfortunate scenes on ‘the island’ towards the end. Particularly, the way it reminded me of how the movie, Kong – Skull Island (2017), made me feel. By this I mean that both films are fun and thrilling, but they also made me sad because the creatures in both were either existing/resting peacefully until human interference.

Just like in Jurassic World, in Fallen Kingdom Pratt and Howard’s character’s romantic connection was a plot device that I found myself unenthused by.  Particularly because it felt even more unnecessary this time around.

Definitely watch Jurassic World – Fallen Kingdom, especially if you liked the first movie. It’s still quite fun overall and even more so if you like dinosaurs.

JURASSIC WORLD (2015): The Things I Liked…

Besides reminding me to be grateful that humans no longer share planet earth with dinosaurs, Jurassic World has officially awakened me to Chris Pratt’s super charismatic magic. A gift, when combined with a good script, among other things, the result is a thoroughly entertaining movie.

I’ve never been into dinosaurs myself. But director Colin Trevorrow’s film is a fun ride, one that features several wow moments. Impressive scenes courtesy of the special effects and a beautiful visual style.

Also starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Nick Robinson, Jurassic World takes place on the original site of Jurassic Park (1993); where a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur now exists. It’s when said dinosaur escapes and goes on a very well-captured killing spree, that the film’s action properly begins.

My overall favourite thing about this movie is pretty much every scene featuring Pratt. You know, on account of his charisma, plus the dialogue. There are also all the scenes with talented and adorable young actor Ty Simpkins, who plays Gray.

As for the things that spoilt this movie just a little for me, there’s the scene where Gray and his brother Zack (Robinson) can light a match, even though I could have sworn that matches are impossible to light when wet. Did I perhaps miss a part where it was revealed that the matches had been stored in a waterproof case? I think not! The second thing I didn’t quite buy into is the romantic love connection between Pratt and Dallas Howard’s characters.

You’ve probably already seen this movie, but if not, make time, because it’s fun and the shooting style is memorable. Also, do it for that Pratt on-screen magic, and especially if you love/or once loved dinosaurs.

Happy Film Loving,
