A QUIET PLACE – DAY ONE (2024): The Things I Liked…

I went into A Quiet Place – Day One with specific expectations based on what I’d seen in other apocalyptic disaster movies. The kind where we usually get to see precisely how the authorities respond to such catastrophes. And where the focus is primarily on one or two families and the actions they take to survive.

The films that came before, namely, A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II only met one of the above expectations. And it’s debatable whether A Quiet Place – Day One meets either. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing; even though it might be why the movie disappoints some people.

Starring Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Djimon Hounsou and Alex Wolffe, the performances in the Michael Sarnoski-directed drama/horror/sci-fi film are good. Yes, the story is quite different from most disaster movies you’ve seen before, but arguably in a refreshing way.

Granted, I may have wanted more than I got in some ways, but the scares and tense, edge-of-your-seat moments that made the first two films special are still present in this third instalment. My favourite moments include the above and below-water scenes before the church, plus that well-captured dash at the end.

There’s also the way the movie opens with an interesting fact about New York City’s noise levels. A perfect way to focus the audience’s attention – a reminder to take it all in before the silence is all we have. No wonder all that noise sounded musical, thanks to expert sound engineering.

A Quiet Place – Day One will probably make you think about your city and your relationship to it because as cliché as the following statement may be, ‘New York City is one of the key characters of this movie‘.

Watch A Quiet Place – Day One and be moved, perhaps even to tears. Whether it’s because of the heartbreaking story, the reminder of how much you love your life, or your favourite city/home town, among other things.

To my super pleasant surprise, I loved the musical score. Yes, I noticed that the score worked perfectly with the film as it played. Still, just as that famous song started to play in the very last scene, I was extra glad I sat in my seat until the credits finished rolling because all the music that played over the credits was gorgeous! Gorgeous, I tell you! Try it and see. You probably won’t regret it.

The time for the second trailer for A Quiet Place – Day One has arrived.

Directed by Michael Sarnoski; the key cast includes Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Djimon Hounsou and Alex Wolffe.

It’s the end of days. No more people. No more New York. No more nothing.

Before the above words were said, I was perfectly calm and emotionally balanced while watching this trailer. Now, I’m… I’m okay, thanks to some focused deep breaths.

The story, performances and special effects have my attention. I’m also unexpectedly curious to see how the authorities will be deployed to react strategically; besides simply telling people to shelter in place.

Lastly, will the cat make it out alive? Now, that is the question.

Jennifer Woodward, Mark Khan, Zay Domo Artist, Alexander John, Elijah Ungvary, Jonathan Sparrow and Cain Aiden also star.

A Quiet Place – Day One follows writer/director John Krasinski’s drama/horror/sci-fi hits, A Quiet Place (2018) and A Quiet Place Part 2 (2020).

Co-written by Krasinski and directed this time by Michael Sarnoski; we finally get to learn about what happened the day the world went quiet.

I love that I had absolutely no idea this was on the way, let alone that it would star an actor as magnetic as Nyong’o.

I may end up terrified, but I’m ready for the action, story, visual effects, and hopefully answers to questions many A Quiet Place fans have had since the first movie.

Also, it’s still only month two, but 2024 is looking good for the volume of movies I’m excited about this year. Will you be watching to see if Nyong’o’s character makes it through?

A QUIET PLACE PART 2 (2020): The Things I Liked…

A Quiet Place Part 2 (2020), Emily Blunt, Paramount Pictures
A Quiet Place Part 2 (2020), Emily Blunt, Paramount Pictures

A Quiet Place Part 2 is one of those rare sequels that didn’t leave me disappointed at the end. I found so much to love about Emily Blunt, John Krasinski and Cillian Murphy’s movie that I’m contemplating watching it again in a few days.

There’s lot’s of heart in this one. So much so that the word that lit up in my mind throughout most of the movie, and especially towards the end, is love; though perhaps not in the most obvious way. The acting is brilliant and you’re going to jump out of your skin a few times. You may even cry, once or twice.

Don’t be surprised if as soon as the movie starts, you find yourself confused and wondering whether the cinema has messed up and is playing A Quiet Place (2018) instead of A Quiet Place Part 2. They haven’t made a mistake, because soon enough, just about everything starts making sense, and after a slightly slower pace, it all picks up and becomes so engrossing and entertaining that you probably won’t see the end coming.

As for what I wish was different about this movie, there are a few small things, two of which happen in act one. The first involves the placing of the baby in the box, then wading away in the water. This scene proved confusing, and distressing, in part because of the shot that follows it.

My other issue is with the arguably unnecessary pounding musical score that accompanies what happens after Blunt’s character says ‘Run.’ I feel that the same scene works better in the trailer, where it’s captured without music. Or, maybe the music that ends up in the film simply stood out a lot, and not in the best way.

Overall, I’d say that the annoyances that come with A Quiet Place Part 2 in no way outweigh the fun and moving ride that this film is. Watch it if you haven’t already. You may find that the word love lights up brightly for you, as it did for me.

The official trailer for A Quiet Place Part 2 is here. A John Krasinski-directed horror/thriller starring Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy and about a family whose survival is dependant on how quiet they can be in their everyday lives.

This is one of very few trailers that doesn’t feel too long even though it’s more than 2.5 minutes in length.

I’m looking forward to all the major ‘mommy badassery’ we can expect from Blunt. I also find myself relieved that Murphy will be playing a good guy. The Abbot family could really do with another adult on their side. Especially considering all the people left who ‘aren’t worth saving’.

Okieriete Onaodowan, Blake DeLong, Ashley Dyke, Andy Rich and Silas Pereira-Olson also star.

A Quiet Place Part 2 Release Dates: May 28th, 2021 (US); June 4th, 2021 (UK)…
