EXTINCTION (2018): The Thing I Liked…

Directed by Ben Young; starring Michael Peña, Mike Colter and Lizzy Caplan; Extinction is a Netflix sci-fi thriller. One where a father’s recurring nightmare showing his family in grave danger becomes a reality.

What I’d love to be writing at this point is: ‘The tide has finally turned. At long last, we have a good Netflix movie‘. But instead, the very best I can say about Extinction is that the full premise, which isn’t completely revealed until towards the last third of the film, is exciting. It’s just unfortunate that when the revelation finally comes, you may not find yourself as thrilled and or delighted story-wise as you might have imagined.

The acting isn’t bad, but I found the all-important big revelation very underwhelming, thanks to the story structure/edit and, no doubt, the low budget. The script needed more development because ‘hollow’ is how Young’s movie felt. Instead of me celebrating a well-executed film that had a brilliant premise, I’m left thinking about how big a missed opportunity Extinction has turned out to be.

Watch it if you absolutely must. Otherwise, there’s Minority Report (2002); which isn’t very similar to Extinction, but it is undoubtedly a rather good movie.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Extinction (2018).

Extinction, a new Ben Young-directed sci-fi/thriller, is about a father’s recurring nightmare that shows his family in grave danger becoming a reality.

The nightmare comes true when the planet is suddenly invaded by a highly destructive force, and so the fight for their lives begins.

Michael Peña, Mike Colter and Lizzy Caplan star.

I’m probably being way too optimistic here but I’m interested because I want an explanation for why he could see the future. I’d love a twist in the story. For example, is he linked to the invaders somehow? My fingers are crossed for  a worthy Netflix movie.

Emma Booth, Israel Broussard, Tom Riley and Georgia Goodman also star.

Extinction Release Dates: July 27th, 2018 (US)…

12 STRONG (2018): New Trailer From Chris Hemsworth, Michael Shannon, Michael Peña, Taylor Sheridan…

Directed by Nicolai Fuglsig, 12 Strong is the true story of the first Special Forces team deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11. Their mission is to work with an Afghan warlord to take down the Taliban.

Once again, as I do with most war movies I watch, I have to ask the question, how likely is this film to take the place of The Hurt Locker as my favourite war movie? Right now, I’m uncertain. But of course, we’ll see.

12 Strong Release Dates: January 19th, 2018 (US); January 26th, 2018 (UK)…

CHiPs (2017): The Thing I Liked…

CHiPs (2017), Michael Peña, Dax Shepherd
CHiPs (2017), Michael Peña, Dax Shepherd

I tuned into ChiPs because of the trailer. I also happened to be in the mood for laughs in a movie with actors I already like. Michael Peña I appreciate because of End of Watch (2012) and Dax Shepherd for his recent appearance in an Interview on Hot Ones, a very popular YouTube series I enjoy.

With additional cast that includes, Kristen Bell, Maya Rudolph and Vincent D’Onofrio, CHiPs also has Shepherd occupying the director’s seat.

The good news is that the thought, ‘that wasn’t a bad opener,’ did cross my mind by the end of the first seven minutes of ChiPs. I enjoyed the shenanigans of the two Los Angeles Highway Patrol motorcycle officers played by Shepherd and Peña. I can therefore say that I found ChiPs adequately entertaining, story-wise. Another highlight is the beautiful imagery of Los Angeles, plus Peña and Shepherd’s chemistry, however awkward at times.

I see ChiPs as an answer to the question ‘what’s the name of Dax Shepherd and Michael Peña’s movie?’ It’s certainly that for me more than it’s an answer to the question ‘which buddy/cop movie do you highly recommend?’

With that said, watch ChiPs if you’re really curious. I was, so I did. Luckily for me, I regret nothing.

CHIPS (2017): New Trailer From Dax Shepherd, Michael Peña, Kristen Bell…

Starring Michael Peña, Kristen Bell, Dax Shepherd, Dax Shepherd and Maya Rudolph, CHIPS is a new comedy about the shenanigans of two Los Angeles Highway Patrol motorcycle officers.

Written/directed by Shepherd, I’m drawn to chips because they’re delicious… but, to be serious, I’m drawn to CHIPS because I enjoyed some of the jokes in the trailer.

Another reason would be that I’m still kind of chasing the excellent onscreen chemistry that Michael Peña had with Jake Gyllenhaal in what is still my favourite buddy/cop movie, probably always, End of Watch (2012). A great film that features the kind of brotherly love dreams are certainly made of.

Chips Release Dates: March 24th, 2017 (US & UK)…
