GODZILLA vs. KONG (2021): The Things I Liked…

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), Warner Bros. Pictures

The main reason I wanted to watch Godzilla vs Kong is the monster fight. What proved most disappointing is that I found the fight sequences to be ‘just ok’ at best.

The special effects were impressive and I particularly appreciated the city lights in Hong Kong, as well as the film’s smart use of colour. Other highlights include Brian Tyree Henry who came across very convincingly as the investigator/conspiracy theory enthusiast.

As someone who enjoyed Kong Skull Island (2017), I was expecting an equally engaging story with Godzilla vs Kong. Especially where the fight sequences were concerned. It’s unfortunate that by the twenty-minute mark, I found myself wanting to fast forward to the monster face-off, rather than sit through the tired human stories I was supposed to buy into.

My desire to skip to the fun moments is partly because I wasn’t able to suspend my disbelief enough, not to notice how silly and cliché the story felt at times. I also missed Tom Hiddleston’s character from Kong Skull Island and found myself wishing he were in this movie. Because that way, he’d have helped ground things a little more.

If you’re curious about the special effects, watch Godzilla vs Kong. You may find yourself thinking that it feels sillier than expected, but you will most likely enjoy the CGI and the lights.

GODZILLA vs. KONG (2021): New Trailer From Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza González, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall…

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), Rebecca Hall, Warner Bros. Pictures

Read my spoiler-free movie review of  Godzilla vs. Kong (2021).

Eiza González, Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown and Rebecca Hall are the stars of new action/sci-fi/thriller Godzilla vs Kong.

Directed by Adam Wingard; Godzilla vs Kong pits two of motion picture history’s greatest monster icons against one another. The fearsome Godzilla and the mighty Kong find themselves in an epic fight; all while humanity is caught in the balance.

The cinematography and visual effects are what I’m absolutely in for. Second, I’m hoping for a very thrilling monster showdown. Especially since I remember watching Kong – Skull Island (2017) and loving the well-choreographed scenes of Kong and another monster he fought with, to the death.

Are you ready for the epic visual feast?

Brian Tyree Henry, Shun Oguri, Julian Dennison, Lance Reddick, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir, Kaylee Hottle, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Ronny Chieng, Chris Chalk and John Pirruccello also star.

Godzilla vs. Kong Release Dates: March 31st, 2021 (US & UK)…

ENOLA HOLMES (2020): The Things I Liked…

Enola Holmes (2020), Millie Bobby Brown, Netflix
Enola Holmes (2020), Millie Bobby Brown, Netflix

Enola Holmes, a drama/mystery about the teenage sister of famous detective Sherlock Holmes is not a terrible film.

Focused on Enola’s search for her newly missing mother (Helena Bonham Carter), which then leads to the teenager becoming a super-sleuth in her own right, Millie Bobby Brown is great in the lead role.

Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin as Enola’s big brothers Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes are also quite entertaining to watch; as are the moments of fun dialogue. Yet, overall, it’s really during the first two or three action sequences that I had the most fun.

Director Harry Bradbeer’s movie is quite engaging at first. It’s just that once the film’s first action sequence had taken place, I found myself disappointed because, not too long afterwards, my engagement started to drift, only to peak again during other physical scenes.

A young woman’s journey to choosing her path in life, regardless of pressures from many around her is what Enola Holmes is really about. I generally enjoy stories like these. Neverthless, even though there are moments in this movie that I’ll remember fondly, the story edit and pacing didn’t leave me as content with the finished product as anticipated.

Watch Enola Holmes if you’re curious. It is quite charming and Sam Claflin is great at playing unlikably cantankerous aristocrats. If you’ve seen him in The Riot Club (2014), you understand.

Godzilla – King Of The Monsters is a new Michael Dougherty directed action / adventure of epic proportions. One that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.

Millie Bobby BrownVera Farmiga, Sally Hawkins and Bradley Whitford star…

My favourite thing about this trailer? Each moment wings unfurl to that beautiful music – especially at 1:19. The combination of the visual effects, the score and the monster’s sheer size makes for an almost, dare I say, ‘spiritual experience?’

To be clear, I’m in for the special effects and would truly be delighted if this were a disaster movie that pleasantly surprised me in more than one or two ways.

Kyle Chandler, Charles Dance, Ziyi Zhang, Aisha Hinds, Thomas Middleditch, Ken Watanabe and O’Shea Jackson also star.
