CHARLIE’S ANGELS (2019): The Things I Liked…

I wanted Charlie’s Angels, an action/comedy about three ass-kicking young women who work for a private detective agency, to be a good movie. Unfortunately, I can’t say that ‘good’ is the word that best fits.

Part of the reason director Elizabeth Banks’s film isn’t great is, firstly, the fact that it offers nothing that hasn’t been seen many, many times before – and often better executed. Second, there’s the arguably insufficient chemistry between the three main characters played by Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska. It also didn’t help that much of the humour – most of which is delivered by Stewart came across as forced.

Lastly, Naomi Scott’s character’s transition from hacker to full-blown Angel just seemed unconvincing, at best. I mean, the ‘bowl cuts’ sequence was fun but I just couldn’t believe how comfortable she suddenly appeared to be in such a high-stress predicament. Perhaps I’m projecting a little.

In terms of what I liked, the on screen presence of the silent, tattooed assassin played by Jonathan Tucker stood out for me in a good way. Plus, newcomer Ella Balinska has me excited to see what her next roles will be. I also did rather enjoy the below line because of the fear it must inspire in the person to whom the words are directed.

Oh baby, baby! You swiped right. I’m your girlfriend now!’

Should you find yourself especially curious, give Charlie’s Angels a chance. Otherwise, I trust that you know what to do.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Charlie’s Angels (2019).

Charlie’s Angels is an updated version of the action movie released in 2000 – a movie inspired by the 1970s television series.

With Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore now out of the picture; Elizabeth Banks directs Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska as the new Charlie’s Angels.

I watched the 2000 Charlie’s Angels movie a long time ago. As such, I don’t fully recall how I felt about it overall. I think I liked it, and I definitely love the Destiny’s Child song (Independent Women) that was included in the soundtrack.

Having now seen this new trailer, let’s just say that I’m hopeful this reboot will pleasantly surprise us all. Fingers, toes and everything crossed!

Luis Gerardo Méndez, Jonathan Tucker, Noah Centineo, Sam Claflin, Djimon Hounsou, Patrick Stewart and Robert Maaser also star.

Charlie’s Angels Release Dates: November 15th, 2019 (US); November 29th, 2019 (UK)…

ALADDIN (2019): New Official Trailer Starring Will Smith, Naomi Scott, Mena Massoud, Billy magnassen…

Following the ‘Special Look’ Aladdin trailer released just over a month ago, we now have the official trailer with plenty more story and the characters played by Will Smith, Naomi Scott, Mena Massoud and Billy Magnussen.

I’ll be honest, I’m happy to report that Smith is definitely looking less and less like a casting error. Who knew, besides the film-makers, of course?

Up until 1:47 minutes into this new trailer, I’d completely forgotten that Aladdin is actually a musical. I guess now I’m most looking forward to the visuals and the parts without singing. That’s unless this movie somehow manages to revert my lifelong aversion to musicals. You never know.

Kamil Lemieszewski, Numan Acar, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban and Nasim Pedrad also star.

ALADDIN (2019): New Aladdin Trailer Featuring Will Smith As The Genie And Starring Naomi Scott, Mena Massoud…

Starring Will Smith, Naomi Scott, Mena Massoud and Billy Magnussen, finally, the new Aladdin trailer shows us what will smith will look and sound like as the famous genie.

Overall, I like this trailer and my favourite moment in it is the sight of Naomi Scott as Jasmine. What I can’t deny though is my immediate reaction after seeing Smith as the the genie.

An undeniable sense that a massive miscasting may have taken place definitely came over me. However, I’ve decided to ignore that feeling and wait to see how the film actually is.

I of course wish that my reaction was undoubtedly positive and filled with excitement – both for the entirety of the trailer and afterwards. Nevertheless, who knows, perhaps I’ll look back and wonder what I was worried about in the first place, once I’m watching director Guy Ritchie’s movie. He is the man behind my favourite British film of all time after all, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels (1998).

Numan Acar, Kamil Lemieszewski, Nasim Pedrad, Marwan Kenzari and Navid Negahban also star.

POWER RANGERS (2017): New Trailer From Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader…

Power Rangers (2017), Elizabeth Banks
Power Rangers (2017), Elizabeth Banks

Based on the hit children’s TV series, and directed by Dean Israelite, Power Rangers stars Elizabeth Banks, Bill Hader and Bryan Cranston.

The actual  Power Rangers are played by Ludi Lin (The Black Ranger), RJ Cyler (The Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott (The Pink Ranger), Becky G (The Yellow Ranger) and Dacre Montgomery (The Red ranger). They are a group of high school students infused with superpowers that they must harness to save the world.

I used to watch the TV series growing up. Something, namely the trailer, plus the high number of super hero movies in recent years, and my current feelings (boredom), where superhero movies are concerned, tells me one thing. I should probably leave this movie to the die-hard fans, and the young people who are still  into the TV series. I haven’t quite fully decided just yet.

What is your level of enthusiasm for this one?

Power Rangers Movie Release Dates: March 23rd, 2017 (GER); March 24th, 2017 (US & UK)…
