JACKIE (2016): The Things I Liked…

Jackie (2016), Natalie Portman
Jackie (2016), Natalie Portman

Starring ‘acting queen’ Natalie Portman and additional talented cast members that include Peter Sarsgaard, Greta Gerwig, John Hurt and Billy Crudup, I enjoyed taking in everything the camera focused on in director Pablo Larraín’s Jackie.

The costume and visuals in Jackie are beautiful, especially if you love the 60s aesthetic and fashions. As I watched the story of the former First Lady’s experience in the wake of her husband, John F. Kennedy’s assassination, I found myself feeling a little detached – both emotionally but mostly in terms of my enjoyment of the story structure. I couldn’t help but wonder about how much more I’d have enjoyed the film had it had a more traditional structure and been more than just about Jackie’s grief.

My specific preferences aside, Natalie Portman, of course delivered a brilliant performance. Were it up to me, I’d have handed the Best Actress Academy Award to her.

I kind of see Jackie in a similar way to the way I see American Sniper (2014). By this I mean, both films as a whole are ok, but the lead actors performances are what really makes them worth watching. Back in 2014 I was completely ready to hand the best Actor Oscar to Bradley Cooper, but then I saw Eddie Redmayne’s work in The Theory Of Everything (2014), and that was that. The rightful owner absolutely got the golden statue.

Watch Jackie because ‘Lady Portman’ is fantastic.

EXPERIMENTER (2015): Time To Think About How Good You Are At Obeying Authority

Experimenter (2015), Winona Ryder, Peter Sarsgaard
Experimenter (2015), Winona Ryder, Peter Sarsgaard

Based on the work of real life social psychologist Stanley Milgram, Experimenter focuses on the 1961 radical behaviour experiments that Milgram carried out, in order to test the ordinary person’s willingness to obey authority.

With  Peter Sarsgaard, John Leguizamo, Winona Ryder and Anton Yelchin as the leading cast, I’m excited to see where this intriguing true story goes.

BLACK MASS (2015) Trailer 2, Looking forward To The Humour

Black Mass (2015), Johnny Depp
Black Mass (2015), Johnny Depp

Trailer 2 for Black Mass, one of the year’s most promising films is here.

Featuring the brilliant acting talents of Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch and Dakota Johnson, to name just a few, the story of James ‘ Whitey’ Bulger, south Boston’s most infamous violent criminal is looking like something no true film fan is going to want to miss. I can tell you agree.

After seeing this trailer, what’s suddenly very intriguing is the female characters. Particularly how much denial they were likely in. I guess we’ll all find out in 5/6 months.

I get the feeling that the soundtrack to this movie  is going to be memorable.

Black Mass Release Dates: September 18th, 2015 (US), November 25th, 2015 (UK)…
