THE OLD MAN & THE GUN (2018): The Thing I Liked…

Starring Robert Redford, Sissy Spacek, Donald Glover and Casey Affleck, The Old Man & The Gun is a good, charming – as expected, well acted, engaging and sometimes a little amusing movie.

Part of what makes director David Lowery’s film a unique experience is that unlike most, if not all other bank robber movies you’ve seen, this one is quite a relaxed experience (not to be confused with slow). Especially when you consider that Forrest Tucker, the real person on whom Redford’s character is based was described by his victims as well mannered and a gentleman; one who even took to smiling as he robbed.

We get to learn a little about Tucker’s life before he becomes a  septuagenarian, yet I still felt as though I needed a whole documentary about him. Particularly since The Old Man & The Gun had me thinking about Tucker’s psychology. How hard did he really try to find something less criminal than robbing banks to make himself feel as though he was really living? It’s one thing to be compelled to steal in order to survive, it’s something else to do it because it’s fun and delivers on that ‘alive feeling’.

Considering his polite gentlemanly approach, perhaps Tucker just decided to cause as little harm as possible whilst doing his favourite thing which happened to be criminal and best done whilst pointing a gun. Then again, perhaps not.

My conclusion is this: humans are complicated. Maybe watch The Old Man & The Gun to see an intriguing example of just that. Watch it for the charm and because I think it’s one of Redford’s last movies, if not his very last. I heard he’s retiring.

Lastly, Lowery does well to keep this film engaging but definitely don’t go into this expecting anything like the rather brilliant bank robbing opening sequence of The Dark Knight (2008). Make sure you’re relaxed, in the mood for an easy viewing movie experience and be ready to smile.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The Old Man & The Gun (2018).

The Old Man & The Gun is the true story of Forrest Tucker and his unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public.

Directed by David Lowery; Robert Redford, Sissy Spacek, Elisabeth Moss and John David Washington star are among the key cast.

Redford’s character looks so adorable, charming and fun to watch in this.

Just how different this film will be to other bank robber stories, that is my question and I’m looking forward to finding out.

In Our Souls At Night, Jane Fonda and Robert Redford play a widow and widower who’ve lived next to each other for years. The pair have almost no relationship but that all changes when…

I haven’t seen Schoenaerts in a new movie for a while and I really want to. Thestory which intrigues me a little and Jane Fonda, I appreciate because of her great work in Grace & Frankie, Youth (2015). There’s also her interviews in The Hollywood Reporter Roundtables.

Directed by Ritesh Batra, Bruce Dern, Michael Love Toliver and Phyllis Somerville also star.

THE DISCOVERY (2017): The Thing I Liked…

The Discovery (2017), Rooney Mara
The Discovery (2017), Rooney Mara

As you may have heard and read by now, the latest film from Robert Redford, Jason Segel and Rooney Mara, The Discovery has a rather memorable first five minutes – and it’s true.

Written and directed by Justin Lader and Charlie McDowell respectively; the team who brought us the rather good The One I Love (2014); The Discovery is a drama / mystery set two years after it’s scientifically proven that there is indeed an afterlife.

In addition to the opening scene, I did enjoy some of the discussion about what happens in the afterlife – particularly the exploration of whether it’s actually real. There are also one or two more unexpected things that take place later on in the movie that had me surprised, in a good way. Nevertheless, I feel as though had it not been for the good opening scene, there would be much less to say about The Discovery. Reason being most of the film is more ‘OK-ish’ than great. Sure, tune in for the first five minutes and if you’re curious enough, continue on.

Starring Rooney Mara, Robert Redford and Jason Segel, The Discovery is set one year after the existence of the afterlife is scientifically verified, resulting in millions around the world killing themselves in order to ‘get there…’

Directed and co-written by Charlie McDowell, the concept is simply too interesting not to tune in and I’m sure it’s safe to say that all is not as it seems.

TRUTH (2015): For Blanchett’s Performance…

Truth (2015), Cate Blanchett
Truth (2015), Cate Blanchett

TV news producer Mary Mapes, news anchor Dan Rather and the events that led to very harsh scrutiny, especially aimed at Mapes (Cate Blanchett) is what Truth is about. It is also a movie worth seeing especially for Cate Blanchett fans.

Directed by James Vanderbilt, I appreciate Truth as a film that features a few good people  who make decisions based on factors including how easy it will be to live with themselves afterwards. I enjoyed the dialogue towards the end, especially since I want to believe that I would perform as well as Mapes – should I ever find myself in a similar high pressure predicament.

I watched Truth because I knew it would be worth it for Blanchett’s performance alone -and it is. By the end I was also happy to learn a few hard truths about the world of news journalism.

John Benjamin Hickey’s portrayal of a dedicated, thoughtful and unflinchingly supportive husband is another personal highlight. I always love such stories of great friendships. Joy (2015) comes to mind as a recent example that features a great friend played by Dascha Polanco.

Robert Redford, Topher Grace, Dennis Quaid, David Lyons,Stacy Keach and Elisabeth Moss are all good in their roles of course, but watch it for the main performance. I’ve seen Blanchett in many films and picking a favourite still proves impossible.

PETE’S DRAGON (2016): New Trailer Starring Bryce Dallas Howard & Robert Redford & Oakes Fegley

Pete's Dragon (2016), Oakes Fegley
Pete’s Dragon (2016), Oakes Fegley

You wish for a movie about a kid that grows up in a jungle or forrest; a boy who manages to survive against the odds – thanks to his animal friends, and you get three in one year. First the Jungle Book (2016), then The Legend Of Tarzan (2016) and now Pete’s Dragon (2016)…

Starring Oakes Fegley (who I have to say kind of reminds me of a young Cara Delevigne), Robert Redford and Bryce Dallas Howard, it will be interesting to see just how different all three films are, considering the similarities they share.

Something tells me that at least once, all of them will have a moment where the young protagonist from each movie jumps off a cliff as per 1:11 in the above trailer. The ‘something’ is hardcore evidence.

Oona Laurence, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Marcus Henderson also star.

Pete’s Dragon Release Dates: August 12th, 2016 (UK & US); August 25th, 2016 (GER)…
